agent は、大きく分けて2つの意味があります。1つは、本人に代わってビジネスや交渉を行う「代理人・仲介者」（例：不動産業者、スパイ）。もう1つは、科学的な文脈で変化を引き起こす「作用物質・薬剤」（例：洗剤、化学薬品）です。

「agent」は、ラテン語の動詞「agere」（行う、駆り立てる）の現在分詞「agens」（行っている人・もの）に由来します。
