「motive」は、ラテン語の「movere」（動かす）に由来します。
そこから派生した「motivus」は「動いている、動かす力のある」という意味でした。人を物理的にではなく、心理的に「突き動かすもの」が motive です。「Motion（動き）」や「Motor（モーター）」も同じ語源です。
