「Enclose」は、古フランス語の「enclore」に由来し、これは「囲む」「閉じ込める」を意味します。「enclore」は、ラテン語の接頭辞「in-」（中に）と「claudere」（閉じる）が組み合わさった俗ラテン語の「*inclaudo」または「*includo」から派生したと考えられています。つまり、「中に閉じ込める」というのが元々の核となる意味です。
14世紀頃に英語に入り、「囲む」という意味で使われ始め、後に「同封する」という意味も加わりました。綴りは「inclose」とされることもありましたが、現代では「enclose」が一般的です。
