Hey everyone, welcome back to another deep dive. You know, we love exploring these little nuances of English, and today we’re going to be looking at collocations. I think these are so interesting.
Speaker 1 | 00:09.948
Yeah, they really are, and I think, you know, they can really help with sounding more fluent and natural when you’re speaking English too, so.
Speaker 0 | 00:16.353
Right, like sometimes you say something and it’s grammatically correct, but it just doesn’t sound quite right.
Speaker 1 | 00:21.838
Exactly. Yeah. And that’s where collocations come in, you know.
Speaker 0 | 00:25.181
Yeah, so let’s just jump right in. I’m looking at our list here, and the first one that caught my eye is applause. I mean, there’s so many different types of applause, like loud applause, thunderous applause, a round of applause, warm applause. Oh, yeah. I mean, what comes to mind when you hear some of those?
Speaker 1 | 00:44.328
Well, I think you hit the nail on the head there when you said different types because it’s not just applause. It’s describing the applause. Right. So, you know, if you just said, oh, they applauded, that doesn’t really give you a good visual. But if you say they erupted in thunderous applause, you can almost hear it, right? Yeah. Or, you know, polite applause at a, you know, work meeting. Oh, yeah. Versus, you know, thunderous applause at a rock consult. So it really helps to paint that picture.
Speaker 0 | 01:07.761
I love rapturous applause.
Speaker 1 | 01:09.142
Oh, rapturous applause. That’s a good one. Yeah. Yeah, that’s like a standing ovation kind of thing.
Speaker 0 | 01:15.065
Okay, so moving on. Sincerity. That’s a big one.
Speaker 1 | 01:17.867
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 0 | 01:18.507
Genuine sincerity. Yeah. Heartfelt sincerity. Complete sincerity. Can you have… Fake sincerity. I mean, I guess you can, but.
Speaker 1 | 01:30.281
Right. Well, that’s that’s the interesting thing about those collocations is that they they do sort of imply that there is such a thing as fake sincerity. You know, when you say someone is questioning someone’s sincerity, that means that it’s you know, it’s not necessarily, you know, it’s not a given that it’s genuine or authentic.
Speaker 0 | 01:46.688
So maybe they like that polite applause you were talking about. Yeah. Maybe that’s not.
Speaker 1 | 01:50.089
Maybe it’s lacking sincerity.
Speaker 0 | 01:51.590
Lacking sincerity. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. OK. So this next one, I think, is interesting. Tread. Because there’s so many different ways to use this word to tread heavily or tread lightly. But you can tread a path. You can tread water. You can tread in someone’s footsteps.
Speaker 1 | 02:05.837
Oh, yeah. That’s a good one.
Speaker 0 | 02:07.698
What do you?
Speaker 1 | 02:08.258
And again, it just, you know, it paints a picture in your mind. So if you say, you know, he was treading heavily, you know, you almost get that sense of, you know, clumsiness or a lack of awareness maybe. Right. But, you know, treading lightly kind of implies a sense of caution and respect. Yeah. And then, you know, treading water, I think, is a really good one because it really, you know, gets that feeling across of, you know, just trying to stay afloat in a difficult situation.
Speaker 0 | 02:35.798
Just trying to survive.
Speaker 1 | 02:36.738
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 0 | 02:37.799
Yeah. And then treading a path kind of has that sense of purpose and direction.
Speaker 1 | 02:41.260
Yeah. You know, going somewhere. Right. With intention.
Speaker 0 | 02:44.041
Okay. So this next one, encouragement. This is a good one. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 | 02:47.642
I love this one.
Speaker 0 | 02:48.522
Give encouragement. Offer encouragement. Provide encouragement. Words of encouragement. Yeah. These are all so positive.
Speaker 1 | 02:55.729
Yeah. And what I like about these is that it really emphasizes that it’s something that you’re actively doing. Right. You know, you’re not just, you know, feeling encouraging. You’re actually doing something to encourage someone.
Speaker 0 | 03:06.718
Right. You’re giving it, you’re offering it, you’re providing it.
Speaker 1 | 03:08.860
Exactly. And I think, you know, we’ve all had those moments where someone has said something encouraging to us that has really made a difference. And I think it’s important to remember that, you know, we can be that person for someone else, too.
Speaker 0 | 03:22.471
Absolutely. I remember when my teacher told me. Oh,
Speaker 1 | 03:25.369
that reminds me of a story. Yeah. You know, it’s just amazing how a few words can really change someone’s outlook or give them that boost they need to keep going.
Speaker 0 | 03:35.694
Right. Right. And, you know, speaking of outlook and how we view things, let’s talk about bliss. Okay. Blissful ignorance. Yeah. Blissfully unaware. Ooh. Marital bliss. Wedded bliss.
Speaker 1 | 03:48.561
Yeah.
Speaker 0 | 03:49.462
Is ignorance bliss? I don’t know.
Speaker 1 | 03:52.600
That’s a good question. I think sometimes it can be. Right. You know, sometimes it’s better not to know.
Speaker 0 | 03:57.382
Right. But sometimes it’s better to know. Yeah,
Speaker 1 | 03:59.383
exactly. So I think it really depends on the situation.
Speaker 0 | 04:01.725
And then marital bliss, wedded bliss. Yeah. I mean, finding that person that makes you truly happy. I mean, that’s the ultimate goal, right?
Speaker 1 | 04:08.668
Yeah. It’s that sense of, you know, contentment and joy and, you know, just being with someone who, you know, makes you feel complete.
Speaker 0 | 04:15.892
Right. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. This next word is interesting. Faithfully.
Speaker 1 | 04:23.004
Okay.
Speaker 0 | 04:24.125
Serve faithfully. Follow faithfully. Keep faithfully. Translate faithfully. It’s such a strong word.
Speaker 1 | 04:32.570
Yeah, it really is. It implies a sense of, you know, loyalty and commitment. You know, you’re not just doing something. You’re doing it faithfully. You know, you’re putting your whole heart into it.
Speaker 0 | 04:41.336
It’s like a soldier serving their country faithfully. Yeah.
Speaker 1 | 04:44.738
Yeah. Exactly. Or a friend. keeping a secret faithfully. You know, it’s that sense of trustworthiness and, you know, really honoring your commitments.
Speaker 0 | 04:52.319
Right. Okay. So how about rebel?
Speaker 1 | 04:54.062
Ooh, rebel.
Speaker 0 | 04:54.904
Rebel forces, fighter, rebel leader, rebel movement.
Speaker 1 | 04:58.066
I love those words because they just conjure up images of, you know, people fighting for what they believe in, you know, standing up against injustice and, you know, really making a difference in the world.
Speaker 0 | 05:08.710
Yeah. Like those historical figures who stood up for what they believed in, even when it was dangerous.
Speaker 1 | 05:13.532
Exactly. You know, they were rebels in their own time and they changed the course of history. Right.
Speaker 0 | 05:18.354
OK. So this next one’s a little bit heavier. Tragic. OK. Tragic event. Tragic accident. Yeah. Tragic loss. Tragic end.
Speaker 1 | 05:29.146
Yeah, those are definitely heavier words, I think. You know, tragic really conveys that sense of, you know, deep sorrow and loss.
Speaker 0 | 05:37.173
Right. It’s like something that you can’t really come back from.
Speaker 1 | 05:39.275
Yeah. It’s something that’s, you know, profound and, you know, really impactful.
Speaker 0 | 05:44.120
Like a natural disaster. Yeah. Or a sudden loss.
Speaker 1 | 05:47.162
Exactly.
Speaker 0 | 05:48.183
Yeah. Okay. So let’s lighten things up a bit. How about indignant?
Speaker 1 | 05:52.127
Indignant. Okay.
Speaker 0 | 05:53.268
Indignant. Feel indignant. Yeah. This one I always think of like when someone cuts you off in traffic. Yeah. Or, you know, like something small that just really gets under your skin.
Speaker 1 | 06:01.494
Yeah. It’s like that sense of, you know, righteous anger. Yes. You know, you’ve been wronged. Yes. And you’re not going to stand for it.
Speaker 0 | 06:11.340
Right. And it’s a little bit more than just being annoyed.
Speaker 1 | 06:14.162
Yeah. It’s definitely a stronger emotion.
Speaker 0 | 06:17.144
Right. Okay. So this next one, swamp.
Speaker 1 | 06:19.826
Swamp.
Speaker 0 | 06:20.206
Okay. Land, swamp area. But then you can be swamped with work or emails.
Speaker 1 | 06:25.370
Oh, yeah. I’ve definitely been there. Right. Yeah. It’s that feeling of being completely overwhelmed and, you know, like you’re just drowning in tasks.
Speaker 0 | 06:33.373
You can’t even see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Speaker 1 | 06:35.234
Yeah. You’re just trying to keep your head above water.
Speaker 0 | 06:37.494
And then there’s that phrase, drain the swamp.
Speaker 1 | 06:39.795
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 0 | 06:40.996
That’s become very popular.
Speaker 1 | 06:42.396
It has. Yeah. It’s often used in a political context to talk about, you know, getting rid of corruption or inefficiencies.
Speaker 0 | 06:49.179
Right. Just cleaning things up.
Speaker 1 | 06:50.460
Yeah. Startin’fresh.
Speaker 0 | 06:51.540
Okay. Pledge. Okay. Make a pledge. Honor a pledge. fulfill a pledge break a play yeah pledges are serious business right it’s like a promise yeah you’re making a commitment to do something right and if you break a pledge oh that’s not good now that can have serious consequences yeah okay warfare this one’s pretty intense yeah warfare conventional warfare guerrilla
Speaker 2 | 07:13.302
warfare nuclear warfare psychological warfare wow chemical warfare biological warfare.
Speaker 1 | 07:22.454
Yeah, those are all very different types of warfare, but they all have one thing in common which is that they’re very destructive.
Speaker 0 | 07:29.038
Right. It’s scary to think about.
Speaker 1 | 07:30.779
It is, yeah, and I think it’s important to remember that, you know, war always has a human cost. Right. And that, you know, we should always strive for peace.
Speaker 0 | 07:41.344
Okay, so let’s switch gears a bit. How about interpretation?
Speaker 1 | 07:44.366
Interpretation, okay.
Speaker 0 | 07:45.647
Accurate interpretation, alternative interpretation, literal interpretation, personal interpretation.
Speaker 1 | 07:51.078
I like that one because it really highlights how subjective interpretation can be. Right.
Speaker 0 | 07:55.199
Like two people can look at the same thing. Yeah. And interpret it in completely different ways.
Speaker 1 | 07:59.180
Exactly. And I think that’s why it’s so important to be open-minded and to consider different perspectives.
Speaker 0 | 08:04.601
And to be willing to admit when you might be wrong. Yeah. And, you know, on that note, I’m really thankful for this opportunity to learn from you today.
Speaker 1 | 08:12.903
Me too. It’s always fun to talk about language.
Speaker 0 | 08:15.144
Yeah. So speaking of important values, how about equality?
Speaker 1 | 08:19.365
Equality.
Speaker 0 | 08:19.985
Okay. Gender equality. Yeah. Racial equality. Social equality.
Speaker 1 | 08:25.269
Yeah. Those are all really important concepts.
Speaker 0 | 08:27.611
Yeah. It’s about creating a world where everyone has equal opportunities.
Speaker 1 | 08:31.434
Exactly. And where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.
Speaker 0 | 08:35.357
Yeah. And it’s something that we’re still working towards.
Speaker 1 | 08:37.358
Absolutely. It’s an ongoing process.
Speaker 0 | 08:39.399
Okay. So last one, invasion.
Speaker 1 | 08:40.780
Invasion. Okay.
Speaker 0 | 08:41.681
Military invasion. That’s one that comes to mind first. But then there’s also invasion of privacy. Oh,
Speaker 1 | 08:46.565
yeah. Especially in this. digital age.
Speaker 0 | 08:48.566
Right. With all the data collection and social media and everything.
Speaker 1 | 08:51.547
Yeah. It’s almost like a new form of invasion.
Speaker 0 | 08:54.907
Right. It’s like they’re invading our digital space.
Speaker 1 | 08:57.208
Exactly. And it really makes you think about, you know, where the boundaries are.
Speaker 0 | 09:00.829
Right. What are our rights?
Speaker 1 | 09:02.390
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 0 | 09:02.950
Well, this has been a fascinating deep dive. Yeah. I’ve learned so much about collocations today.
Speaker 1 | 09:07.511
Me too. It’s been a great discussion.
Speaker 0 | 09:09.472
And I hope our listeners have too. So to everyone out there, keep an ear out for these collocations. You’ll start to notice them everywhere.
Speaker 1 | 09:15.573
You will. And. don’t be afraid to try using them yourself. You know, the more you practice, the more natural they’ll become.
Speaker 0 | 09:21.979
Absolutely. Well, that’s all the time we have for today. Thanks for joining us on this deep dive into the world of English collocations.
