continent は、地球の主要な陸塊である「大陸」を指す名詞です。一般的に、アジア、アフリカ、北アメリカ、南アメリカ、南極、ヨーロッパ、オーストラリアの7つが大陸とされています。また、イギリス英語では、形容詞的に “the Continent” と言うと、イギリスとアイルランドを除く「ヨーロッパ本土」を指す特定の用法があります。

「Continent」は、ラテン語の表現 “continens terra“（連続した土地）に由来します。”continens” は、「共に、完全に」を意味する「con-」と、「持つ、保つ」を意味する「tenere」から成り立っています。つまり、「一つにまとまっている、連続している」というのが元々の意味です。これが、海によって分断されずに続いている広大な陸地、すなわち「大陸」を指す言葉として使われるようになりました。
