Joe Green went on very well; he learned quickly, and was so attentive and careful that John began to trust him in many things.

ジョー・グリーンはとてもうまくやっていました。彼はすぐに学び、とても注意深く慎重だったので、ジョンは多くのことを彼に任せ始めました。

But as I have said, he was small of his age, and it was seldom that he was allowed to exercise either Ginger or me.

しかし前にも言ったように、彼は年齢のわりに小柄だったので、ジンジャーや私を運動させることはめったに許されませんでした。

But it so happened one morning that John was out with Justice in the luggage cart.

ところがある朝、たまたまジョンはジャスティスを連れて荷物用馬車で出かけていました。

And the master wanted a note to be taken immediately to a gentleman’s house, about three miles distant.

そして主人は、約三マイル離れた紳士の家へ、手紙をすぐに届けてもらいたいと思っていました。

And sent his orders for Joe to saddle me and take it, adding the caution that he was to ride steadily.

そこで主人は、ジョーに私へ鞍をつけてそれを届けるよう命じ、落ち着いて乗るようにという注意を付け加えました。

The note was delivered, and we were quietly returning when we came to the brick-field.

手紙は届けられ、私たちは静かに戻っていました。そのとき、れんが製造場に差しかかりました。

Here we saw a cart heavily laden with bricks.

そこで私たちは、れんがを重く積んだ荷車を見ました。

The wheels had stuck fast in the stiff mud of some deep ruts.

車輪は深い轍の硬い泥にはまり込んでいました。

And the carter was shouting and flogging the two horses unmercifully.

そして荷馬車の御者は叫びながら、二頭の馬を無慈悲にむちで打っていました。

Joe pulled up. It was a sad sight.

ジョーは馬を止めました。それは悲しい光景でした。

There were the two horses straining and struggling with all their might to drag the cart out, but they could not move it.

二頭の馬は、荷車を引き出そうとして全力で力をこめ、もがいていました。しかし荷車を動かすことはできませんでした。

The sweat streamed from their legs and flanks, their sides heaved, and every muscle was strained.

汗は脚や脇腹から流れ、体の側面は激しく上下し、すべての筋肉が張りつめていました。

While the man, fiercely pulling at the head of the fore horse, swore and lashed most brutally.

その一方で男は、前の馬の頭を激しく引っぱりながら、ののしり、きわめて残酷にむちで打っていました。

“Hold hard,” said Joe; “don’t go on flogging the horses like that.”

「待ってください」とジョーは言いました。「そんなふうに馬をむちで打ち続けないでください」

“The wheels are so stuck that they cannot move the cart.”

「車輪があまりにもはまり込んでいて、馬たちは荷車を動かせないのです」

The man took no heed, but went on lashing.

男は気に留めることなく、むち打ち続けました。

“Stop! pray stop!” said Joe.

「やめてください！ どうかやめてください！」とジョーは言いました。

“I’ll help you to lighten the cart; they can’t move it now.”

「荷車の荷を軽くするのを手伝います。今のままでは馬たちは動かせません」

“Mind your own business, you impudent young rascal, and I’ll mind mine!”

「自分のことだけ気にしていろ、この生意気な若造め。俺は俺のことをやる！」

The man was in a towering passion and the worse for drink, and laid on the whip again.

その男は激怒しており、酒のせいでさらにひどい状態でした。そしてまたむちを打ちつけました。

Joe turned my head, and the next moment we were going at a round gallop toward the house of the master brick-maker.

ジョーは私の頭を向け、次の瞬間、私たちはれんが製造場の主人の家へ向かって勢いよく駆け出していました。

I cannot say if John would have approved of our pace, but Joe and I were both of one mind.

ジョンが私たちの速さを認めたかどうかはわかりません。しかしジョーと私は同じ気持ちでした。

And so angry that we could not have gone slower.

そして私たちはとても怒っていたので、これよりゆっくり進むことはできなかったでしょう。

The house stood close by the roadside.

その家は道端のすぐ近くに立っていました。

Joe knocked at the door, and shouted, “Halloo! Is Mr. Clay at home?”

ジョーは扉をたたき、「おーい！ クレイさんはいらっしゃいますか」と叫びました。

The door was opened, and Mr. Clay himself came out.

扉が開き、クレイ氏本人が出てきました。

“Halloo, young man! You seem in a hurry; any orders from the squire this morning?”

「おや、若者！ 急いでいるようだね。今朝、地主様から何か命令でもあったのかい」

“No, Mr. Clay, but there’s a fellow in your brick-yard flogging two horses to death.”

「いいえ、クレイさん。でも、あなたのれんが置き場で、二頭の馬を死ぬほどむち打っている男がいます」

“I told him to stop, and he wouldn’t; I said I’d help him to lighten the cart, and he wouldn’t; so I have come to tell you.”

「私はやめるように言いましたが、彼はやめませんでした。荷車を軽くするのを手伝うと言いましたが、それも聞きませんでした。だから知らせに来たのです」

“Pray, sir, go.” Joe’s voice shook with excitement.

「どうか行ってください」。ジョーの声は興奮で震えていました。

“Thank ye, my lad,” said the man, running in for his hat.

「ありがとう、若者」とその男は言い、帽子を取りに中へ走りました。

Then pausing for a moment, “Will you give evidence of what you saw if I should bring the fellow up before a magistrate?”

それから一瞬立ち止まり、「もし私がその男を治安判事の前へ連れていくなら、君は見たことを証言してくれるか」と言いました。

“That I will,” said Joe, “and glad too.”

「もちろんします」とジョーは言いました。「喜んでします」

The man was gone, and we were on our way home at a smart trot.

その男は出かけ、私たちはきびきびした速歩で家路につきました。

“Why, what’s the matter with you, Joe? You look angry all over,” said John, as the boy flung himself from the saddle.

少年が鞍から飛び降りると、ジョンは言いました。「おや、どうしたんだ、ジョー。全身で怒っているように見えるぞ」

“I am angry all over, I can tell you,” said the boy.

「全身で怒っています。本当にそうです」と少年は言いました。

And then in hurried, excited words he told all that had happened.

それから彼は、急いだ興奮した言葉で、起こったことをすべて話しました。

Joe was usually such a quiet, gentle little fellow that it was wonderful to see him so roused.

ジョーは普段とても静かで優しい小さな少年だったので、彼がこれほど奮い立っているのを見るのは驚くべきことでした。

“Right, Joe! you did right, my boy, whether the fellow gets a summons or not.”

「正しいぞ、ジョー！ あの男に召喚状が出るかどうかに関係なく、おまえは正しいことをしたのだ」

“Many folks would have ridden by and said it was not their business to interfere.”

「多くの人なら、ただ通り過ぎて、それは自分の関わることではないと言っただろう」

“Now I say that with cruelty and oppression it is everybody’s business to interfere when they see it.”

「だが私は言う。残酷さや虐げを見たなら、介入することは皆の務めなのだ」

“You did right, my boy.”

「おまえは正しいことをしたのだ、若者よ」

Joe was quite calm by this time, and proud that John approved of him.

この時にはジョーはすっかり落ち着いており、ジョンが自分を認めてくれたことを誇らしく思っていました。

And cleaned out my feet and rubbed me down with a firmer hand than usual.

そして彼は私の足を掃除し、いつもよりしっかりした手つきで体を拭いてくれました。

They were just going home to dinner when the footman came down to the stable to say that Joe was wanted directly in master’s private room.

彼らがちょうど昼食のために家へ行こうとしていたとき、従僕が馬小屋へ降りてきて、ジョーがすぐに主人の私室へ呼ばれていると伝えました。

There was a man brought up for ill-using horses, and Joe’s evidence was wanted.

馬を虐待したことで連れてこられた男がいて、ジョーの証言が求められていたのです。

The boy flushed up to his forehead, and his eyes sparkled.

少年は額まで赤くなり、目を輝かせました。

“They shall have it,” said he.

「証言します」と彼は言いました。

“Put yourself a bit straight,” said John.

「少し身なりを整えなさい」とジョンは言いました。

Joe gave a pull at his necktie and a twitch at his jacket, and was off in a moment.

ジョーはネクタイを引っぱり、上着を少し整えると、すぐに出ていきました。

Our master being one of the county magistrates, cases were often brought to him to settle, or say what should be done.

私たちの主人は郡の治安判事の一人だったので、事件はよく彼のもとへ持ち込まれ、解決されたり、どうすべきか判断されたりしていました。

In the stable we heard no more for some time, as it was the men’s dinner hour.

馬小屋ではしばらくそれ以上のことは聞こえませんでした。男たちの昼食の時間だったからです。

But when Joe came next into the stable I saw he was in high spirits.

しかし次にジョーが馬小屋へ入ってきたとき、私は彼が上機嫌であることに気づきました。

He gave me a good-natured slap, and said, “We won’t see such things done, will we, old fellow?”

彼は私を気さくにぽんとたたき、「あんなことが行われるのを見過ごさないよな、相棒」と言いました。

We heard afterward that he had given his evidence so clearly.

後で私たちは、彼がとても明確に証言したことを聞きました。

And the horses were in such an exhausted state, bearing marks of such brutal usage, that the carter was committed to take his trial.

そして馬たちは疲れ果てた状態で、残酷な扱いの跡を負っていたため、荷馬車の御者は裁判にかけられることになりました。

And might possibly be sentenced to two or three months in prison.

そして、おそらく二、三か月の刑務所行きの判決を受けるかもしれないとのことでした。

It was wonderful what a change had come over Joe.

ジョーに起こった変化は驚くべきものでした。

John laughed, and said he had grown an inch taller in that week, and I believe he had.

ジョンは笑って、その週に彼は一インチ背が伸びたと言いました。私も本当にそうだと思いました。

He was just as kind and gentle as before.

彼は以前と同じように親切で優しいままでした。

But there was more purpose and determination in all that he did.

しかし、彼のすることすべてには、以前よりもはっきりした目的意識と決意がありました。

As if he had jumped at once from a boy into a man.

まるで彼は、少年から大人へ一気に成長したかのようでした。
