forgery は名詞で、主に二つの意味で使われます。一つは、他人をだます目的で文書や芸術品などを不正に作り出す「偽造（という行為）」です。これは犯罪行為を指します。もう一つは、その行為によって作られた「偽造品」そのものです。例えば、偽の署名、偽札、偽の絵画などがこれにあたります。

“Forgery” は動詞 “forge” から派生した言葉です。”forge” は元々、ラテン語の “fabrica“（作業場、製作）から古フランス語の “forge“（鍛冶場）を経て、「金属を熱して形作る、鍛造する」という意味でした。やがて、そこから比喩的に「（計画などを）作り上げる」という意味が生まれ、さらに悪い意味で「（偽物を）でっち上げる、偽造する」という意味に発展しました。
