That night, when Marilla took Anne up to bed, she spoke in her usual brisk and practical way.
“Now, Anne, I noticed last night that you threw your clothes all about the floor.”
“That is a very untidy habit, and I cannot allow it.”
“You must fold your clothes neatly and place them on the chair.”
Anne looked around the little east gable room with a cautious delight.
It no longer seemed quite so terrible as it had seemed the night before.
There was a little hope in the room now, and that made everything different.
“I will try to be very neat,” she said earnestly.
“I never had much chance to learn neatness before, but I want to learn everything now.”
Marilla felt somewhat uncomfortable under the child’s eager seriousness.
She had come upstairs only to give a few instructions, not to be moved by Anne’s feelings.
But Anne’s feelings had a way of getting into everything.
Marilla suddenly remembered something else.
“Do you say your prayers before going to bed?” she asked sharply.
Anne looked surprised.
“No, I never say any prayers.”
Marilla was shocked. “Anne, what do you mean?”
“Were you never taught to say your prayers?”
Anne shook her head with honest simplicity.
“Nobody ever taught me. Mrs. Thomas told me once that God made my hair red on purpose.”
“And I thought that was not very kind of Him.”
Marilla felt that this was dreadful and also somehow difficult to answer.
She asked whether Anne knew who God was.
Anne answered that she knew something from the catechism, but not much in a personal way.
“I always thought God sounded rather distant and terrible,” she said.
“If I were going to pray, I think I would like to pray to someone more friendly.”
Marilla decided that this matter must be dealt with at once.
“You must say your prayers tonight,” she said firmly.
“I will teach you a proper prayer tomorrow, but tonight you must say one yourself.”
Anne looked very interested.
“Must I kneel down?” she asked.
“Yes, of course,” said Marilla.
Anne knelt by Marilla’s knee and clasped her hands.
“Why must people kneel down to pray?” she asked.
“If I really wanted to pray, I would go out into a great field or a deep wood.”
“I would look up into the sky, up, up, up, into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there were no end to its blueness.”
“Then I would just feel a prayer.”
Marilla told her not to talk so much, but to say her prayer.
Anne shut her eyes very tightly and began with solemn earnestness.
“Gracious Heavenly Father,” she said carefully.
Then she paused, thinking hard about what ought to come next.
“That is the way ministers say it in church, so I suppose it is all right.”
“Thank you for the White Way of Delight and the Lake of Shining Waters.”
“And for Bonny and the Snow Queen.”
“I am really extremely grateful for them.”
“And that is all the blessings I can think of just now.”
“As for the things I want, they are so numerous that it would take a great deal of time to name them all.”
“So I will only mention the two most important.”
“Please let me stay at Green Gables.”
“And please let me be good-looking when I grow up.”
“I remain, Yours respectfully, Anne Shirley.”
Anne opened her eyes and looked at Marilla with satisfied expectation.
Marilla did not know whether to be horrified or amused.
The prayer was unlike anything she had ever heard.
It was irreverent, of course, and yet Anne had meant no disrespect.
There was something painfully ignorant and sincere about it.
“You must never pray like that again,” said Marilla, recovering herself.
“I will teach you a prayer tomorrow.”
Anne looked disappointed.
“I thought it was a pretty good prayer,” she said.
“I was not trying to be wicked. I really meant everything.”
“That is just the trouble,” said Marilla dryly.
“Now get into bed and go to sleep.”
Anne obeyed, but she lingered a moment with one hand on the bedpost.
“Marilla,” she asked softly,“do you think I shall be allowed to stay?”
“That has not been fully decided yet,” said Marilla.
“But you may stay here for the present, while Matthew and I see how things work out.”
Anne’s face flashed into radiance.
“Oh, Marilla! That is not quite certainty, but it is almost hope.”
“And hope is such a beautiful thing.”
Marilla told her again to go to sleep, this time more gently.
Downstairs, Marilla found Matthew sitting in the kitchen.
He looked up at her with anxious expectation.
Marilla sat down and folded her knitting with determination.
“Matthew, that child is terribly ignorant,” she said.
“She has never been taught anything properly.”
Matthew said nothing, but his face showed that he was listening closely.
“If we keep her, she will need a great deal of training.”
Matthew looked relieved at the words if we keep her.
“Well now, I suppose she might learn,” he said hopefully.
“She is bright enough,” admitted Marilla.
“Too bright in some ways. Her tongue is never still, and her imagination runs wild.”
“But there is something about her.”
“I suppose we had better keep her, since Providence seems to have sent her to us.”
Matthew’s face shone with quiet satisfaction.
“I was kind of hoping you’d see it that way,” he said.
“You would have kept her from the start,” said Marilla, half accusingly.
Matthew smiled a little, his shy smile barely showing through his beard.
“Well now, she’s a real interesting little thing.”
Marilla said sharply that interest was not enough; Anne must be brought up properly.
Still, there was a softened look about her mouth as she spoke.
Upstairs, Anne lay awake for a long time, too happy and too excited to sleep.
The Snow Queen whispered outside the window, and the night wind moved softly through the blossoms.
Anne whispered back, as if the tree were a friend.
“I am almost sure I am going to stay.”
Then, with hope wrapped warmly around her heart, she fell asleep.
