「Terrace」は、古フランス語の「terrasse」に由来し、これは「盛り土、台地」を意味します。さらに遡ると、俗ラテン語の *terracia を経て、ラテン語の「terra」（土地、大地）に行き着きます。つまり、「土地（terra）を盛り上げて作った平らな場所」というのが元の意味です。「terrain（地形）」や「territory（領土）」、「terrestrial（地球の）」なども同じ「terra」を語源に持ちます。
