Mastro Cherry gives the piece of wood to his friend Geppetto, who takes it to make himself a Marionette that will dance, fence, and turn somersaults.

マストロ・チェリーは木切れを友人のゼペットに渡す。ゼペットはそれを使って、踊り、剣で戦い、宙返りもする操り人形を作ろうとする。
In that very instant, a loud knock sounded on the door.
まさにその瞬間、ドアを大きくたたく音が響きました。
“Come in,” said the carpenter, not having an atom of strength left with which to stand up.
「入りなさい」と大工は言いました。立ち上がる力など、少しも残っていませんでした。
At the words, the door opened and a dapper little old man came in.
その言葉を聞くと、ドアが開き、こぎれいな小柄な老人が入ってきました。
His name was Geppetto, but to the boys of the neighborhood he was Polendina, on account of the wig he always wore which was just the color of yellow corn.
彼の名前はゼペットでしたが、近所の少年たちは彼をポレンディーナと呼んでいました。いつもかぶっているかつらが、ちょうど黄色いトウモロコシのような色だったからです。
Polendina means cornmeal mush.
ポレンディーナとは、トウモロコシ粉で作った粥のことです。
Geppetto had a very bad temper. Woe to the one who called him Polendina!
ゼペットはとても短気でした。彼をポレンディーナと呼ぶ者には災いあれ、というほどでした。
He became as wild as a beast and no one could soothe him.
彼は獣のように荒々しくなり、誰もなだめることができませんでした。
“Good day, Mastro Antonio,” said Geppetto. “What are you doing on the floor?”
「こんにちは、マストロ・アントニオ」とゼペットは言いました。「床の上で何をしているのですか？」
“I am teaching the ants their A B C’s.”
「アリたちにABCを教えているところだよ」
“Good luck to you!”
「それはご苦労なことだ！」
“What brought you here, friend Geppetto?”
「友よ、ゼペット、何が君をここへ連れてきたのだね？」
“My legs. And it may flatter you to know, Mastro Antonio, that I have come to you to beg for a favor.”
「私の足だよ。それに、マストロ・アントニオ、君に頼みごとをしに来たと知れば、君も悪い気はしないだろう」
“Here I am, at your service,” answered the carpenter, raising himself on to his knees.
「ここにいるよ。ご用命のままに」と大工は答え、膝をついて身を起こしました。
“This morning a fine idea came to me.”
「今朝、すばらしい考えが浮かんだのだ」
“Let’s hear it.”
「聞かせてくれ」
“I thought of making myself a beautiful wooden Marionette.”
「私は美しい木の操り人形を作ろうと思ったのだ」
It must be wonderful, one that will be able to dance, fence, and turn somersaults.
それはすばらしいものでなければなりません。踊ることができ、剣で戦うことができ、宙返りもできる人形です。
With it I intend to go around the world, to earn my crust of bread and cup of wine.
私はそれを連れて世界を回り、日々のパンと一杯のワインを稼ぐつもりです。
What do you think of it?”
「どう思うかね？」
“Bravo, Polendina!” cried the same tiny voice which came from no one knew where.
「すばらしいぞ、ポレンディーナ！」と、どこからともなく、あの同じ小さな声が叫びました。
On hearing himself called Polendina, Mastro Geppetto turned the color of a red pepper and, facing the carpenter, said to him angrily:
自分がポレンディーナと呼ばれたのを聞くと、マストロ・ゼペットは赤唐辛子のような色になり、大工の方を向いて怒って言いました。
“Why do you insult me?”
「なぜ私を侮辱するのだ？」
“Who is insulting you?”
「誰が君を侮辱しているんだ？」
“You called me Polendina.”
「君が私をポレンディーナと呼んだ」
“I did not.”
「呼んでいない」
“I suppose you think I did! Yet I KNOW it was you.”
「私が言ったとでも思っているのだろう！ だが、私には君だと分かっている」
“No!”
「違う！」
“Yes!”
「そうだ！」
“No!”
「違う！」
“Yes!”
「そうだ！」
And growing angrier each moment, they went from words to blows, and finally began to scratch and bite and slap each other.
そして二人は刻々とますます怒り、言い争いから殴り合いになり、ついには互いをひっかき、噛みつき、平手打ちし始めました。
When the fight was over, Mastro Antonio had Geppetto’s yellow wig in his hands and Geppetto found the carpenter’s curly wig in his mouth.
けんかが終わった時、マストロ・アントニオはゼペットの黄色いかつらを手に持ち、ゼペットは大工の巻き毛のかつらを口にくわえていました。
“Give me back my wig!” shouted Mastro Antonio in a surly voice.
「私のかつらを返せ！」とマストロ・アントニオは不機嫌な声で叫びました。
“You return mine and we’ll be friends.”
「君が私のを返せば、私たちは友だちだ」
The two little old men, each with his own wig back on his own head, shook hands and swore to be good friends for the rest of their lives.
二人の小柄な老人は、それぞれ自分のかつらを自分の頭に戻すと、握手をし、一生よい友だちでいると誓いました。
“Well then, Mastro Geppetto,” said the carpenter, to show he bore him no ill will, “what is it you want?”
「さて、それではマストロ・ゼペット」と大工は、悪意を抱いていないことを示すために言いました。「君は何が欲しいのだね？」
“I want a piece of wood to make a Marionette. Will you give it to me?”
「操り人形を作るための木切れが欲しい。私にくれるかね？」
Mastro Antonio, very glad indeed, went immediately to his bench to get the piece of wood which had frightened him so much.
マストロ・アントニオは本当にうれしくなり、自分をあれほど怖がらせた木切れを取りに、すぐ作業台へ向かいました。
But as he was about to give it to his friend, with a violent jerk it slipped out of his hands and hit against poor Geppetto’s thin legs.
ところが、それを友人に渡そうとしたその時、木切れは激しくぐいっと動き、彼の手からすべり落ちて、かわいそうなゼペットの細い脚にぶつかりました。
“Ah! Is this the gentle way, Mastro Antonio, in which you make your gifts? You have made me almost lame!”
「ああ！ マストロ・アントニオ、これが君の贈り物のやさしい渡し方なのかね？ 私はもう少しで足が不自由になるところだったぞ！」
“I swear to you I did not do it!”
「誓って言うが、私がやったのではない！」
“It was I, of course!”
「もちろん、私がやったとでも言うのか！」
“It’s the fault of this piece of wood.”
「この木切れのせいなのだ」
“You’re right; but remember you were the one to throw it at my legs.”
「それはそうだ。だが、それを私の脚に投げつけたのは君だということを忘れるな」
“I did not throw it!”
「私は投げていない！」
“Liar!”
「うそつき！」
“Geppetto, do not insult me or I shall call you Polendina.”
「ゼペット、私を侮辱するな。さもないと、君をポレンディーナと呼ぶぞ」
“Idiot.”
「ばか者」
“Polendina!”

“Donkey!”
「まぬけ！」

On hearing himself called Polendina for the third time, Geppetto lost his head with rage and threw himself upon the carpenter.
三度目にポレンディーナと呼ばれたのを聞くと、ゼペットは怒りで我を忘れ、大工に飛びかかりました。
Then and there they gave each other a sound thrashing.
その場で二人は、互いに激しく打ち合いました。
After this fight, Mastro Antonio had two more scratches on his nose, and Geppetto had two buttons missing from his coat.
このけんかの後、マストロ・アントニオの鼻にはひっかき傷が二つ増え、ゼペットの上着からはボタンが二つなくなっていました。
Thus having settled their accounts, they shook hands and swore to be good friends for the rest of their lives.
こうして互いの貸し借りを済ませると、二人は握手をし、一生よい友だちでいると誓いました。
Then Geppetto took the fine piece of wood, thanked Mastro Antonio, and limped away toward home.
それからゼペットはその立派な木切れを受け取り、マストロ・アントニオに礼を言って、足を引きずりながら家へ向かって行きました。
