『ピーター・パン』英文/和訳 PART III　人魚の入り江

One fine summer evening Peter, with Wendy and their little family, went down to the Lagoon where the Mermaids lived.

ある美しい夏の夕方、ピーターはウェンディと小さな家族を連れて、人魚たちの住む入り江へ下りていきました。

The Never-Never-Never Land, as you see, is full of the most strange and interesting creatures.

ご存じのとおり、ネバー・ネバー・ネバー・ランドには、実に奇妙で興味深い生き物たちがあふれています。

Some of them are dreadful, like the Pirates, wolves, and crocodiles; others, like the fairies and the mermaids, are altogether beautiful and charming.

海賊や狼やワニのように恐ろしいものもいれば、妖精や人魚のように、この上なく美しく魅力的なものもいます。

Wendy and her brothers, who had never seen a real mermaid with a tail, were very much excited.

ウェンディと弟たちは、尾を持つ本物の人魚を見たことがなかったので、とても興奮していました。

As luck would have it, just as they arrived at the lagoon, one of them, seated on a rock, was combing her long tresses.

運のよいことに、彼らが入り江に着いたちょうどそのとき、一人の人魚が岩の上に座って、長い髪をとかしていました。

The sunlight gleamed on her hair, until it shone like a mixture of gold and bronze, for it had a beautiful greenish tinge.

陽の光がその髪にきらめき、髪は金と青銅を混ぜたように輝いていました。そこには美しい緑がかった色合いがあったのです。

As she combed her hair she sang such a wonderful melody that the boys longed to catch her.

彼女は髪をとかしながら、あまりにもすばらしい旋律を歌ったので、少年たちは彼女を捕まえたくてたまらなくなりました。

They instantly dashed into the water, but with a piercing cry of “Mortals!” the Mermaid dived out of their reach into the lowest depths.

彼らはすぐに水の中へ飛び込みました。しかし人魚は「人間だ！」と鋭く叫ぶと、手の届かない水底深くへ潜ってしまいました。

“But look! here is another little mermaid! Surely we can catch her!” said John Napoleon Darling, and he very nearly did.

「でも見て！ ここにもう一人、小さな人魚がいるよ！ きっと捕まえられる！」とジョン・ナポレオン・ダーリングが言いました。そして彼は本当にもう少しで捕まえるところでした。

Mermaids, however, are hard to catch, and when caught, are still harder to hold.

けれども人魚は捕まえるのが難しく、たとえ捕まえても、つかまえておくのはさらに難しいのです。

John succeeded in getting the little sprite in his hands but, wriggling like an eel, she slipped out of his grasp.

ジョンはその小さな妖精のような人魚を手の中に捕まえることに成功しましたが、彼女はウナギのように身をくねらせて、彼の手からすり抜けてしまいました。

Breathless with excitement, the whole band of children clambered on to the rocks.

興奮で息を切らしながら、子どもたちの一団は岩の上へよじ登りました。

All at once a cry went up: “The Pirates!” Sure enough a boat was approaching, and in it were seated the two pirate lieutenants, Smee and Starkey.

そのとき突然、叫び声が上がりました。「海賊だ！」たしかに一そうの舟が近づいてきており、その中には海賊の副官であるスミーとスターキーが座っていました。

The boys were already swimming to the shore as fast as they could, when to his horror Peter recognised Tiger Lily sitting in the stern.

少年たちはすでに、できるだけ速く岸へ泳いでいました。そのときピーターは、船尾にタイガー・リリーが座っているのに気づき、ぞっとしました。

She was tightly bound with ropes. In a flash he guessed what was their intention.

彼女は縄できつく縛られていました。ピーターは一瞬で、海賊たちが何をしようとしているのかを悟りました。

The wretches meant to leave her, all bound as she was, upon the rock, until the tide came up and drowned her.

その悪党どもは、彼女を縛ったまま岩の上に置き去りにし、潮が満ちてきて彼女を溺れさせるつもりだったのです。

Determined to save her, Peter thought of a clever trick.

彼女を助けようと決意したピーターは、巧妙な策略を思いつきました。

Imitating the wicked Captain’s voice he called out: “Cut her bonds and let her go!”

彼は邪悪な船長の声をまねて、叫びました。「縄を切って、彼女を放してやれ！」

The effect was marvellous: the astonished buccaneers, fearing to disobey their Captain, instantly released Tiger Lily.

その効果は驚くべきものでした。仰天した海賊たちは、船長に逆らうことを恐れて、すぐにタイガー・リリーを解放したのです。

Tiger Lily leapt into the water and swam towards the boys.

タイガー・リリーは水の中へ飛び込み、少年たちのほうへ泳いでいきました。

The Pirates had turned and were rowing back, when they saw Hook swimming towards them, and learnt from him how they had been duped.

海賊たちは向きを変えて漕ぎ戻っていましたが、そこへフックが泳いでくるのが見えました。そして彼から、自分たちがどのようにだまされたのかを知りました。

Horribly enraged, he chased them out of the boat, leaving them to swim back to the ship as best they might.

ひどく激怒したフックは、彼らを舟から追い出し、どうにかして船まで泳いで帰らせることにしました。

While they swam back, he himself set about recapturing Tiger Lily.

彼らが泳いで戻るあいだ、フック自身はタイガー・リリーを再び捕まえようと取りかかりました。

But the Pirates once safely out of the way, Peter and his friends went back to the rock to attack the Captain, who was now single-handed.

しかし海賊たちが無事にいなくなると、ピーターと仲間たちは岩へ戻り、今では一人きりになった船長を攻撃しようとしました。

A fierce fight ensued, Hook using his iron prong to some purpose on poor Peter.

激しい戦いが始まりました。フックは鉄の鉤を使って、かわいそうなピーターにかなりの痛手を負わせました。

Meanwhile the boys, seizing Hook’s boat, rowed off with Tiger Lily in it.

そのあいだに少年たちはフックの舟を奪い取り、タイガー・リリーを乗せて漕ぎ去りました。

At last, finding himself outdone, the Captain gave up the fight, and in all haste swam back to his ship.

とうとう自分が負けたと悟った船長は戦いをあきらめ、大急ぎで自分の船へ泳いで戻りました。

Peter, left alone on the rock with Wendy, found her so exhausted that she could neither swim nor fly any farther.

ピーターはウェンディと二人だけで岩の上に残されました。そしてウェンディがあまりにも疲れ切っていて、もう泳ぐことも飛ぶこともできないとわかりました。

With difficulty he managed to help her to a firm footing, but the tide was rising, and they were both in great danger.

ピーターは苦労して彼女をしっかりした足場へ助け上げました。しかし潮は満ちてきており、二人とも大きな危険にさらされていました。

As he watched the water silently creeping nearer, Peter almost despaired.

水が静かに近づいてくるのを見ながら、ピーターはほとんど絶望しかけました。

But all at once a large kite came flying slowly over the lagoon.

しかしそのとき突然、大きな凧が入り江の上をゆっくり飛んできました。

In a second Peter had seized its tail and, binding it tightly round Wendy, he sent her sailing away in safety.

ピーターは一瞬でその尾をつかみ、それをウェンディの体にきつく結びつけると、彼女を安全に空へ送り出しました。

He bravely called, “Good-bye Wendy!” until she was out of sight.

ピーターは勇敢に「さようなら、ウェンディ！」と叫び続けました。彼女の姿が見えなくなるまで。

Then indeed, as the tide rose steadily, Peter was in great peril.

それから本当に、潮が着実に満ちてくるにつれて、ピーターは大きな危機に陥りました。

The water reached his feet, and he was beginning to think it would be a “tremendous adventure to die.”

水は彼の足元まで達し、ピーターは「死ぬというのは、すさまじい冒険になるだろう」と考え始めていました。

Then who should come sailing by but a great sea-bird on its nest, which had been blown off the cliffs by the rising storm.

するとそこへ、巣に乗った大きな海鳥が流れてきました。その巣は、強まる嵐によって崖から吹き飛ばされてきたのです。

“Hurrah!” cried Peter, “there’s a lovely boat for me!”

「ばんざい！」とピーターは叫びました。「ぼくにぴったりのすてきな舟だ！」

Chasing the bird off, in he stepped, curled himself round and, spreading out his coat to the wind, sailed swiftly and merrily after Wendy.

ピーターは鳥を追い払うと、その中へ乗り込み、体を丸くしました。そして上着を風に広げ、ウェンディのあとを追って、速く陽気に帆走していきました。
