He took hold of[つかみ] my hand and we started running back down the road together.
彼は私の手を握り一緒に道を走って戻【る】り始めた。
As we ran I began to wonder who this funny little man could be,[～だろう] and where he lived.

I was a perfect stranger to him, and yet he was taking me to his own home to get dried.

Such a change, after[～にもかかわらず] the old red-faced Colonel who had refused even to tell me the time! Presently we stopped.

“Here we are,” he said.
「さあ、着いたぞ」と彼は言った。
I looked up to see where we were and found myself back at the foot of the steps leading to[～に至る] the little house with the big garden!
どこだろうと顔を見上げて見ると、あの大きな庭のある小さな家へと続く石段の下に戻っていることに気がついた。
My new friend was already running up the steps and opening the gate with some keys he took from his pocket.
新しい友人はすでに階段を駆け上がり、ポケットから取り出したいくつかのカギで門を開けていた。
“Surely,” I thought, “this cannot be the great Doctor Dolittle himself!”
「まさか」と私は思った。「この人がえらいドリトル先生その人なんてありえない！」
I suppose after hearing so much about him I had expected some one very tall and strong and marvelous.
ドリトル先生についてあまりにも色々と噂を聞いていたので、私は先生はとても背が高くて強くて素晴らしい人だろうと予想していた。
It was hard to believe that this funny little man with the kind smiling face could be really he.
優しい笑顔をするこの奇妙な小柄な男性が本当に先生かもしれないとはとても信じられなかった。
Yet here he was, sure enough,[思った通り] running up the steps and opening the very gate which I had been watching for so many days!
しかし彼はここで、案の定、階段を駆け上がり、私が何日も前から見ていた、まさしくその門を開けていた！
The dog, Jip, came rushing out and started jumping up on him and barking[吠える] with happiness. The rain was splashing down[降り注ぐ] heavier than ever.
犬のジップが駆けつけてきて彼に飛びつき嬉しそうに吠えはじめた。雨はよりいっそう激しく降ってきた。
“Are you Doctor Dolittle?” I shouted as we sped[speedの過去] up the short garden-path to the house.
「あなたがドリトル先生ですか？」と、私は家までの短い庭の小道を急ぎながら大きな声で叫んだ。
“Yes, I’m Doctor Dolittle,” said he, opening the front door with the same bunch of keys.
「ああそうだよ、私がドリトルだ」と彼は言って、同じ束の鍵で玄関のドアを開けた。
“Get in! Don’t bother about wiping your feet. Never mind the mud. Take it in with you.[（泥を）あなたと一緒に持ち込みなさい] Get in out of the rain!”
「入りなさい！足を拭いたりすることはない。泥なんて気にしなくてもいい。そのままでかまわない。 中に入りなさい。雨に濡れないように！」
I popped in, he and Jip following. Then he slammed the door to behind us.
中に飛び込むと、先生とジップが後に続き、後ろのドアをバタンと閉めた。
The storm had made it dark enough outside; but inside the house, with the door closed, it was as black as night.
嵐のせいで外ですら暗かったけど、ドアを閉めた家の中は、夜のように真っ暗だった。
Then began the most extraordinary[異常な] noise that I have ever heard.
そして今まで聞いたことのないような驚くべき音が聞こえ始めた。
It sounded like all sorts and kinds of animals and birds calling and squeaking[きしみ声] and screeching at the same time.
いろいろな種類の動物や鳥の叫び声、鳴き声、キーキーとかん高い音が一度に聞こえてきた。
I could hear things trundling down the stairs and hurrying along passages.
階段から転がり落ちて通路を急いでやってくる物音も聞くことができた。
Somewhere in the dark a duck was quacking, a cock was crowing, a dove was cooing, an owl was hooting, a lamb was bleating and Jip was barking.
暗闇のどこかでアヒルがガーガーと鳴き、おんどりがコケコッコーと鳴き、ハトはクークーと鳴き、フクロウはホーホーと鳴き、子羊もメーと鳴いた。そして、ジップが吠えていた。
I felt birds’ wings fluttering and fanning near my face. Things kept[続けて] bumping into my legs and nearly upsetting me.
私は顔の近くで鳥の羽がはためき、風を扇ぐのを感じた。何度も何度もなにかが私の足にドンと突き当たり、ひっくりかえりそうになった。
The whole front hall seemed to be filling up with animals.
玄関ホール全体が動物で埋め尽くされているようだった。
The noise, together with[～が加わって] the roaring of the rain, was tremendous;

and I was beginning to grow a little bit scared when I felt the Doctor take hold of my arm and shout into my ear.
私が少し怖くなり始めた時、先生が私の腕を掴んで耳元で大きな声で言った。
“Don’t be alarmed. Don’t be frightened. These are just some of my pets.
「心配することはない。怖がることはない。わしのペットのたちさ。
I’ve been away three months and they are glad to see me home again.
3ヶ月ぶりに帰ってきたから喜んでいるんだよ。
Stand still where you are till I strike a light.[火打ち石で火をつける] My Gracious, what a storm!—Just listen to that thunder!”
火をつけるまでじっとしていなさい。いやはや、何という嵐だ。–-あの雷の音を聞いてみなさい！」
So there I stood in the pitch-black dark,[漆黒の闇] while all kinds of animals which I couldn’t see chattered[おしゃべりをしたり] and jostled around me.
真っ暗な闇の中に立っていると、目に見えない動物たちが私の周りでけたたましく鳴いたり、押し合ったりした。
It was a curious and a funny feeling.
それは奇妙でおかしな感じだった。
I had often wondered, when I had looked in from the front gate, what Doctor Dolittle would be like and what the funny little house would have inside it.
玄関から覗いていたときは、ドリトル先生とはどんな人なのだろうか、奇妙な小さな家の中はどうなっているのだろうか、とよく考えていた。
But I never imagined it would be anything like this.
でも、こんな風だとは想像もしていなかった。
Yet somehow after I had felt the Doctor’s hand upon my arm I was not frightened, only confused.
しかし、腕に先生の手が触れるのを感じた後は、怖くなくなり、ただ途方に暮れた。
It all seemed like some queer dream; and I was beginning to wonder if I was really awake, when I heard the Doctor speaking again:
まるですべてが奇妙な夢のようだった。そして私は本当に目を覚ましているのだろうかと疑い始めていた時、もういちど先生の話が聞こえた。
“My blessed matches are all wet. They won’t strike. Have you got any?”
「わしの（神の祝福を受けた）マッチがすべて濡れている。火が付かない。きみは（マッチを）もってないかね？」
“No, I’m afraid I haven’t,” I called back.
「すいません。持っていません」と私は答えた。
“Never mind,” said he. “Perhaps Dab-Dab can raise[もたらす] us a light somewhere.”
「大丈夫だ」と彼は言った。「おそらくダブダブがどこかで火を持ってくるだろう。
Then the Doctor made some funny clicking noises with his tongue and I heard some one trundle up the stairs again and start moving about in the rooms above.
先生が舌でカチャカチャと変な音を立てると、何かがまた階段をかけ[転がり]上がり、上の部屋を動き回り始めた。
Then we waited quite a while without anything happening.
それから私たちはかなりの時間待ったが、なにも起きはしなかった。
“Will the light be long in coming?” I asked. “Some animal is sitting on my foot and my toes are going to sleep.”
「火が来るのは時間がかかるんですか？」と私は尋ねた。「なにかの動物が僕の足の上に座っていて足のつま先が痺れてしまったんですけど」
“No, only a minute,”[ほんの１分] said the Doctor. “She’ll be back in a minute.”
「いいや、すぐ来るさ」と先生は言った。「彼女はすぐに戻ってくる」
And just then I saw the first glimmerings of a light[最初の光のきらめき] around the landing [階段頂上の床面,階段途中の踊り場]above. At once all the animals kept quiet.
そしてちょうどその時、階段の上付近でちらりと光るのが見えた。すぐに動物たちはみんな静かになった。
“I thought you lived alone,” I said to the Doctor.
「あなたは一人暮らしだと思っていました」私は先生に言った。
“So I do,” said he. “It is Dab-Dab who is bringing the light.”
「そのとおりだよ」と先生は言った。「光をもって来ているのはダブダブだよ」
I looked up the stairs trying to make out[見分けようと] who was coming.
私は誰が来たのか確認しようと階段を見上げた。
I could not see around the landing but I heard the most curious footstep on the upper flight. [階段のひと続き]
階段の周りは見えなかったけど上の階段でとても奇妙な足音が聞こえた。
It sounded like some one[someone] hopping down from one step to the other, as though he were using only one leg.
まるで何かが片足だけで一段一段飛び降りるような音がした。
As the light came lower, it grew brighter and began to throw[投影され始めた] strange jumping shadows on the walls.
光が（階段を）下りてくると、あたりは明るくなり、（動物たちの）跳ねまわる奇妙な影が壁に映し出され始めた。
“Ah—at last!” said the Doctor. “Good old Dab-Dab!”
「あぁ、ついに！」と先生は言った。「懐かしの[古き良き]ダブダブよ！」
And then I thought I really must be dreaming.
私はまさしく夢を見ているに違いないと思った。
For there, craning her neck round the bend of the landing, hopping down the stairs on one leg, came a spotless[しみのない] white duck.
というのは、階段の曲がり角に伸ばした首を回して、片足で階段を飛び降りる真っ白なアヒルが来たのだ。
And in her right foot she carried a lighted candle!
そして彼女は右足に火のついたロウソクを持っていたのである。
