“It’s a child having a game!” I cried, after a moment or two, feeling a little irritated by the trivial occupation[職業,業務] that had been thrust upon me.

“Never mind, go on!”

And I counted away…. And I put down rows[列] of figures…. And the sun continued to play in front of me, with mathematical precision.

“Well?” said Lupin, after a longer pause than usual.

“Why, it seems finished…. There has been nothing for some minutes….”

We waited and, as no more light flashed through space, I said, jestingly:
僕たちは待っていたが、もう光が宙を通り抜けることはなく、僕は冗談半分に言った。
“My idea is that we have been wasting our time. A few figures on paper: a poor result!”
「考えるに、僕たちは時間を無駄にしたよ。いくつかの数字が紙に書かれただけという、お粗末な結果さ！」
Lupin, without stirring from his sofa, rejoined:[応答する]

“Oblige[義務を負わせる, 余儀なくさせる] me, old chap,[大将,兄貴] by putting in the place of each of those numbers the corresponding letter of the alphabet.
「その数字のそれぞれの場所に対応するアルファベットの文字を入れてくれないか、きみ。
Count A as 1, B as 2 and so on.[など] Do you follow me?”[（話に）ついてきているかい]

“But it’s idiotic!”
「でも馬鹿げているよ」
“Absolutely[完全に] idiotic, but we do such a lot of idiotic things in this life…. One more or less, you know!…”
「たしかに馬鹿げている、でも、私たちは人生の中で馬鹿なことをたくさんしているのさ…。多かれ少なかれね、わかるだろう！」
I sat down to this silly work and wrote out the first letters:
僕はこの馬鹿げた仕事にとりかかり、最初の文字を書いた。
“Take no….”
「取らないで…」
I broke off[打ち切る] in surprise:
僕は驚いて手を止めた。
“Words!” I exclaimed. “Two English words meaning….”
「言葉だ!」と僕は叫んだ。「2つの英単語が意味するものは…」
“Go on, old chap.”
「いいぞ」
And I went on and the next letters formed two more words, which I separated as they appeared.
続けてみると、次の文字は二つの単語でできていた。僕がその現われた文字を分解してみると、
And, to my great amazement, a complete English sentence lay before my eyes.

“Done?” asked Lupin, after a time.
「終わったかね？」ルパンはしばらくしてから尋ねた。
“Done!… By the way, there are mistakes in the spelling….”
「できた！…ところで、いくつかスペルの間違いがあるんだが…」
“Never mind those and read it out, please…. Read slowly.”
「そんなのは気にしないで読んでみてくれないか…。ゆっくりと読んでくれ」
Thereupon[そこで直ちに] I read out the following unfinished[未完の] communication, which I will set down as it appeared on the paper in front of me:
そこで僕は、（出て来たとおりに）目の前の紙に書き留めた、次のような途中で途切れてしまっている通信文を読み上げた。
“Take no unnecessery[unnecessary] risks. Above all, avoid atacks[attacks], approach ennemy[enemy] with great prudance[prudence] and….”
「余計なリスクを冒すな。何よりも攻撃を避け、慎重に敵に近づき、そして…」
I began to laugh:
僕は笑い始めてしまった。
“And there you are! Fiat lux[ 光あれ （ラテン語）]! We’re simply dazed with light! But, after all, Lupin, confess that this advice, dribbled out by a kitchen-maid, doesn’t help you much!”
「そらきた！光あれ！光で目が眩んでしまいそうだよ。でも、結局のところ、ルパン、台所の女中から漏れて来たこの警告は大して役に立ちそうもないよ」
Lupin rose, without breaking his contemptuous[人をばかにした] silence, and took the sheet of paper.
ルパンは軽蔑したように沈黙を破ることなく立ちあがり、その紙を手に取った。
I remembered soon after that, at this moment, I happened to look at the clock. It was eighteen minutes past five.
僕はその後すぐに、この瞬間に、たまたま時計を見たことを覚えている。5時18分だった。
Lupin was standing with the paper in his hand;

and I was able at my ease to watch, on his youthful features, that extraordinary[並はずれた] mobility[機動性, 流動性] of expression

By what signs? There was one which I knew well, an invariable[一定不変の] sign:
どんな兆候があるというのだろう？（少なくとも）僕がよく知っている一つに、これだけは変わらないという兆しがあった。
Two little crossed wrinkles that marked his forehead whenever he made a powerful effort of[～することに力を入れる] concentration.
彼は集中しようとするといつも額に小さな十字のしわが二つできた。
And I saw it at that moment, saw the tiny[ちっぽけな, ちっちゃな] tell-tale[秘密を暴露する] cross, plainly and deeply scored.[刻み目をつける]
その瞬間、僕はその小さな証拠の十字がはっきりと深く刻まれているのを見た。
He put down the sheet of paper and muttered:
彼は紙を置いてつぶやいた。
“Child’s play!”
「ぞうさもない[つまらぬ事柄]!」
The clock struck half-past five.
時計は5時半を打った。
“What!” I cried. “Have you succeeded?[成功する, うまくいく]… In twelve minutes?…”
「何だって!」と僕は叫んだ。「分かったのかい？… たった12分で？」
He took a few steps up and down the room, lit[lighted] a cigarette and said:
彼は部屋を何歩か上り下りして、煙草に火をつけて言った。
“You might ring up Baron Repstein, if you don’t mind, and tell him I shall be with him[私は彼と一緒にいるつもりだ] at ten o’clock this evening.”
「もしよかったら、レプスタイン男爵に電話して、今晩10時に行くと伝えてくれないか」
“Baron Repstein?” I asked. “The husband of the famous baroness?”
「レプスタイン男爵？」と僕は尋ねた。「有名な男爵夫人の夫かい？」
“Yes.”
「そうだ」
“Are you serious?”
「本気かい？」
“Quite serious.”
「もちろん、大真面目だ」
Feeling absolutely at a loss, but incapable[～ができない] of resisting him, I opened the telephone-directory and unhooked the receiver.[外した]
僕は完全に途方に暮れたが、逆らうこともできず、電話帳を開いて受話器を取った。
But, at that moment, Lupin stopped me with a peremptory[断固とした] gesture and said, with his eyes on the paper, which he had taken up again:
しかしそのとき、ルパンは有無を言わせぬしぐさで僕を止め、再び手に取った紙を見つめこう言った。
“No, don’t say anything…. It’s no use letting him know…. There’s something more urgent … a queer thing that puzzles me….
「いや、何も言うんじゃない…。彼に知らせても無駄だ…。もっと急ぐべきことがある…私を悩ませる奇妙なことだ…。
Why on earth wasn’t the last sentence finished? Why is the sentence….”
一体どうして最後の文が終わってないのか？なぜこの文が…」
He snatched up his hat and stick:
彼は帽子とステッキをひったくった。
“Let’s be off. If I’m not mistaken, this is a business that requires immediate solution;[即時解決] and I don’t believe I am mistaken.”
「さあ、行こう。私の間違いでなければ、この件はすぐに解決する必要がある。間違っているとは思えない」
He put his arm through mine, as we went down the stairs, and said:
階段を下りながら、彼は僕の腕を取って言った。
“I know what everybody knows.
「私が知っているのは皆も知っていることだけだよ。
Baron Repstein, the company-promoter and racing-man, whose colt[子馬] Etna won the Derby and the Grand Prix this year, has been victimized by his wife.
（たとえば）会社の創設者であり競馬ファンでもあるレプスタイン男爵の若馬エトナが今年のダービーとグランプリで優勝したが、妻には痛い目に合わされた。
The wife, who was well known for her fair hair, her dress and her extravagance,[浪費]

ran away a fortnight ago, taking with[携帯する] her a sum of three million francs, stolen from her husband,

For two weeks the police have been pursuing the baroness across France and the continent: an easy job, as she scatters gold and jewels wherever she goes.

They think they have her every moment.

Two days ago, our champion detective, the egregious[言語道断な,とてつもない] Ganimard, arrested a visitor at a big hotel in Belgium,

a woman against whom the most positive evidence seemed to be heaped up.

On enquiry, the lady turned out to be a notorious[悪名高い] chorus-girl called Nelly Darbal. As for the baroness, she has vanished.
（だが）取り調べにより、その女性はネリー・ダーバルと呼ばれる有名なコーラスガールであることが判明した。男爵夫人に関しては、姿を消したままだ。
The baron, on his side, has offered a reward of two hundred thousand francs to whosoever finds his wife.
男爵の方は妻を見つけた者に20万フランの賞金を与えると言い出したんだ。
The money is in the hands of a solicitor.
その金は弁護士が管理している。
Moreover, he has sold his racing-stud, his house on the Boulevard[広い並木街路] Haussmann and his country-seat[田舎の邸宅] of Roquencourt in one lump,
