My new master was an unmarried man.

私の新しい主人は、未婚の男性でした。

He lived at Bath, and was much engaged in business.

彼はバースに住んでおり、仕事でとても忙しくしていました。

His doctor advised him to take horse exercise, and for this purpose he bought me.

医者は彼に乗馬運動をするよう勧め、その目的で彼は私を買いました。

He hired a stable a short distance from his lodgings, and engaged a man named Filcher as groom.

彼は下宿から少し離れたところに馬小屋を借り、フィルチャーという男を馬丁として雇いました。

My master knew very little about horses, but he treated me well.

私の主人は馬についてほとんど知りませんでしたが、私をよく扱ってくれました。

And I should have had a good and easy place but for circumstances of which he was ignorant.

そして、彼が知らなかった事情さえなければ、私は良くて楽な場所にいられたはずでした。

He ordered the best hay with plenty of oats, crushed beans, and bran.

彼は、十分なオーツ麦、砕いた豆、ふすまを添えた最高の干し草を注文しました。

With vetches, or rye grass, as the man might think needful.

さらに、男が必要だと思うなら、カラスノエンドウやライグラスも加えるように、ということでした。

I heard the master give the order, so I knew there was plenty of good food, and I thought I was well off.

私は主人がその注文を出すのを聞いたので、良い餌が十分にあることを知っており、自分は恵まれていると思いました。

For a few days all went on well.

数日のあいだ、すべてはうまくいきました。

I found that my groom understood his business.

私は、自分の馬丁が仕事をよく理解していることに気づきました。

He kept the stable clean and airy, and he groomed me thoroughly.

彼は馬小屋を清潔で風通しのよい状態に保ち、私を徹底的に手入れしてくれました。

And was never otherwise than gentle.

そして彼はいつも優しい態度でした。

He had been an hostler in one of the great hotels in Bath.

彼はバースの大きなホテルの一つで馬丁をしていたことがありました。

He had given that up, and now cultivated fruit and vegetables for the market.

彼はその仕事をやめ、今は市場向けの果物や野菜を栽培していました。

And his wife bred and fattened poultry and rabbits for sale.

そして彼の妻は、販売用の家禽やウサギを育てて太らせていました。

After awhile it seemed to me that my oats came very short.

しばらくすると、私のオーツ麦がとても少なくなっているように思えました。

I had the beans, but bran was mixed with them instead of oats, of which there were very few.

豆はありましたが、オーツ麦の代わりにふすまが混ぜられており、オーツ麦はほんの少ししかありませんでした。

Certainly not more than a quarter of what there should have been.

確かに、本来あるべき量の四分の一にも満たないほどでした。

In two or three weeks this began to tell upon my strength and spirits.

二、三週間たつと、このことが私の力と元気に影響し始めました。

The grass food, though very good, was not the thing to keep up my condition without corn.

草の餌はとても良いものでしたが、穀物なしに私の体調を維持するには十分ではありませんでした。

However, I could not complain, nor make known my wants.

しかし私は不満を言うことも、自分に必要なものを知らせることもできませんでした。

So it went on for about two months.

こうしてそれは約二か月続きました。

And I wondered that my master did not see that something was the matter.

そして私は、主人が何かがおかしいと気づかないことを不思議に思いました。

However, one afternoon he rode out into the country to see a friend of his, a gentleman farmer, who lived on the road to Wells.

しかしある午後、主人は友人に会うために田舎へ馬で出かけました。その友人は、ウェルズへ向かう道沿いに住む紳士農場主でした。

This gentleman had a very quick eye for horses.

この紳士は、馬を見る非常に鋭い目を持っていました。

And after he had welcomed his friend he said, casting his eye over me:

そして友人を迎えたあと、彼は私に目を走らせながら言いました。

“It seems to me, Barry, that your horse does not look so well as he did when you first had him; has he been well?”

「バリー、私には君の馬が、最初に手に入れた時ほど元気そうには見えない。具合はよかったのかね」

“Yes, I believe so,” said my master.

「ええ、そうだと思います」と私の主人は言いました。

“But he is not nearly so lively as he was.”

「しかし、以前ほど活発ではまったくありません」

“My groom tells me that horses are always dull and weak in the autumn, and that I must expect it.”

「馬丁は、秋には馬はいつも元気がなく弱るものだから、そういうものだと思わなければならないと言っています」

“Autumn, fiddlesticks!” said the farmer.

「秋だって、ばかげたことを！」と農場主は言いました。

“Why, this is only August; and with your light work and good food he ought not to go down like this, even if it was autumn.”

「まだ八月ではないか。それに、軽い仕事と良い餌を与えられているなら、たとえ秋であっても、こんなふうに衰えるはずがない」

“How do you feed him?”

「どうやって餌を与えているのかね」

My master told him.

私の主人は彼に説明しました。

The other shook his head slowly, and began to feel me over.

相手はゆっくり首を振り、私の体を触って調べ始めました。

“I can’t say who eats your corn, my dear fellow, but I am much mistaken if your horse gets it.”

「誰が君の穀物を食べているのかは言えないが、君の馬がそれを食べていると言うなら、私は大きく間違っていることになるね」

“Have you ridden very fast?”

「とても速く乗ったのかね」

“No, very gently.”

「いいえ、とても穏やかにです」

“Then just put your hand here,” said he, passing his hand over my neck and shoulder.

「では、ここに手を置いてみなさい」と彼は言い、私の首と肩に手を滑らせました。

“He is as warm and damp as a horse just come up from grass.”

「この馬は、草地から上がってきたばかりの馬のように、温かく湿っている」

“I advise you to look into your stable a little more.”

「もう少し馬小屋のことを調べてみるよう勧めるよ」

“I hate to be suspicious, and, thank heaven, I have no cause to be, for I can trust my men, present or absent.”

「私は疑い深くなるのは嫌いだ。ありがたいことに、私にはその必要もない。自分の使用人たちは、私がいてもいなくても信頼できるからね」

“But there are mean scoundrels, wicked enough to rob a dumb beast of his food.”

「だが世の中には、物言えぬ獣から餌を奪うほど邪悪な、卑しい悪党もいるのだ」

“You must look into it.”

「君はそれを調べなければならない」

And turning to his man, who had come to take me, “Give this horse a right good feed of bruised oats, and don’t stint him.”

そして私を連れて行くために来た自分の使用人のほうを向いて、「この馬に砕いたオーツ麦をたっぷり与えなさい。出し惜しみしてはいけない」と言いました。

“Dumb beasts!” Yes, we are.

「物言えぬ獣！」そうです、私たちはそうなのです。

But if I could have spoken I could have told my master where his oats went to.

しかし、もし私が話せたなら、主人のオーツ麦がどこへ行っていたのかを伝えることができたでしょう。

My groom used to come every morning about six o’clock, and with him a little boy, who always had a covered basket with him.

私の馬丁は毎朝六時ごろやって来ました。そして彼と一緒に、いつもふた付きのかごを持った小さな男の子が来ていました。

He used to go with his father into the harness-room, where the corn was kept.

その子は父親と一緒に、穀物が保管されている馬具部屋へ入っていきました。

And I could see them, when the door stood ajar, fill a little bag with oats out of the bin, and then he used to be off.

そして扉が少し開いていると、彼らが穀物箱からオーツ麦を小さな袋に詰めているのが見えました。それからその子は出ていくのでした。

Five or six mornings after this, just as the boy had left the stable, the door was pushed open.

このことがあって五、六日後の朝、少年が馬小屋を出た直後に、扉が押し開けられました。

And a policeman walked in, holding the child tight by the arm.

そして警官が、子どもの腕をしっかりつかんで入ってきました。

Another policeman followed, and locked the door on the inside.

もう一人の警官が続き、内側から扉に鍵をかけました。

Saying, “Show me the place where your father keeps his rabbits’ food.”

そして言いました。「お父さんがウサギの餌を置いている場所を見せなさい」

The boy looked very frightened and began to cry.

少年はとても怖がった様子で、泣き始めました。

But there was no escape, and he led the way to the corn-bin.

しかし逃げ道はなく、彼は穀物箱のところへ案内しました。

Here the policeman found another empty bag like that which was found full of oats in the boy’s basket.

そこで警官は、少年のかごの中でオーツ麦がいっぱい入っていた袋と同じような、別の空の袋を見つけました。

Filcher was cleaning my feet at the time.

そのときフィルチャーは私の足を掃除していました。

But they soon saw him, and though he blustered a good deal they walked him off to the “lock-up”, and his boy with him.

しかし彼らはすぐに彼を見つけました。そして彼はかなり大声で言い訳しましたが、警官たちは彼を「留置場」へ連れて行き、少年も一緒に連れて行きました。

I heard afterward that the boy was not held to be guilty, but the man was sentenced to prison for two months.

後で聞いたところでは、少年は有罪とはされませんでしたが、その男は二か月の禁錮刑を宣告されました。
