ルパンの結婚

Jean Duc de Sarzeau-Vendome could not finish reading the invitations which he held in his trembling hand.

ジャン・ド・サルゾー＝ヴァンドーム公爵は、震える手に持った招待状を最後まで読み終えることができなかった。

Pale with anger, his long, lean body shaking with tremors:

怒りで青ざめ、長く痩せた体を震わせながら、彼は言った。

“There!” he gasped, handing the two communications to his daughter.

「これだ！」と彼は息を切らして言い、二通の通知を娘に手渡した。

“This is what our friends have received! This has been the talk of Paris since yesterday!”

「これを我々の友人たちが受け取ったのだ！ 昨日からパリ中の噂になっている！」

“What do you say to that dastardly insult, Angelique? What would your poor mother say to it, if she were alive?”

「この卑劣な侮辱をどう思う、アンジェリック？ もしお前の哀れな母が生きていたら何と言うだろうか？」

Angelique was tall and thin like her father, skinny and angular like him.

アンジェリックは父と同じように背が高く痩せ、父と同じように骨ばっていた。

She was thirty-three years of age, always dressed in black stuff, shy and retiring in manner.

彼女は三十三歳で、いつも黒い服地を身につけ、態度は内気で控えめだった。

With a head too small in proportion to her height and narrowed on either side until the nose seemed to jut forth in protest against such parsimony.

背の高さに比べて頭は小さすぎ、両側が狭まっているため、鼻がその節約ぶりに抗議するように突き出て見えた。

And yet it would be impossible to say that she was ugly, for her eyes were extremely beautiful, soft and grave, proud and a little sad.

それでも、彼女を醜いと言うことはできなかった。なぜなら、その目は非常に美しく、柔らかく、厳かで、誇り高く、少し悲しげだったからだ。

Pathetic eyes which to see once was to remember.

一度見れば忘れられない、哀れを誘う目だった。

She flushed with shame at hearing her father’s words, which told her the scandal of which she was the victim.

父の言葉を聞いて、彼女は恥で赤くなった。その言葉によって、自分が被害者となった醜聞を知ったのである。

But, as she loved him, notwithstanding his harshness to her, his injustice and despotism, she said:

しかし、彼が自分に厳しく、不公平で、専横であったにもかかわらず、彼女は父を愛していたので、こう言った。

“Oh, I think it must be meant for a joke, father, to which we need pay no attention!”

「ああ、お父様、これは冗談のつもりなのだと思います。気にする必要はありませんわ！」

“A joke? Why, every one is gossiping about it!”

「冗談だと？ みんながその話を噂しているのだぞ！」

“A dozen papers have printed the confounded notice this morning, with satirical comments.”

「今朝、十数紙がそのいまいましい通知を風刺的なコメントつきで掲載したのだ」

“They quote our pedigree, our ancestors, our illustrious dead. They pretend to take the thing seriously….”

「我が家の家系や祖先、輝かしい故人たちまで引用している。あたかも本気で受け取っているふりをしているのだ……」

“Still, no one could believe….”

「それでも、誰も信じるはずは……」

“Of course not. But that doesn’t prevent us from being the by-word of Paris.”

「もちろん信じはしない。だが、それでも我々がパリの笑いものになるのを防ぐことはできない」

“It will all be forgotten by to-morrow.”

「明日にはすべて忘れられますわ」

“To-morrow, my girl, people will remember that the name of Angelique de Sarzeau-Vendome has been bandied about as it should not be.”

「明日になればな、我が娘よ、人々はアンジェリック・ド・サルゾー＝ヴァンドームの名が、あってはならぬ形で軽々しく言いふらされたことを覚えているだろう」

“Oh, if I could find out the name of the scoundrel who has dared….”

「ああ、こんなことを敢えてした悪党の名を突き止められさえすれば……」

At that moment, Hyacinthe, the duke’s valet, came in and said that monsieur le duc was wanted on the telephone.

その時、公爵の従僕イヤサントが入ってきて、公爵に電話がかかっていると告げた。

Still fuming, he took down the receiver and growled:

まだ腹を立てながら、彼は受話器を取り、うなった。

“Well? Who is it? Yes, it’s the Duc de Sarzeau-Vendome speaking.”

「何だ？ 誰だ？ そうだ、サルゾー＝ヴァンドーム公爵だ」

A voice replied:

声が答えた。

“I want to apologize to you, monsieur le duc, and to Mlle. Angelique. It’s my secretary’s fault.”

「公爵閣下、そしてアンジェリック嬢に謝罪したいのです。私の秘書の過失です」

“Your secretary?”

「君の秘書だと？」

“Yes, the invitations were only a rough draft which I meant to submit to you.”

「はい、あの招待状は、あなたにご確認いただくつもりだった下書きにすぎません」

“Unfortunately my secretary thought….”

「不幸にも、私の秘書が……」

“But, tell me, monsieur, who are you?”

「だが、教えたまえ、君は誰だ？」

“What, monsieur le duc, don’t you know my voice? The voice of your future son-in-law?”

「何です、公爵閣下、私の声がおわかりにならないのですか？ あなたの未来の婿の声ですよ？」

“What!”

「何だと！」

“Arsene Lupin.”

「アルセーヌ・ルパンです」

The duke dropped into a chair. His face was livid.

公爵は椅子に崩れ落ちた。顔は土気色だった。

“Arsene Lupin … it’s he … Arsene Lupin….”

「アルセーヌ・ルパン……奴だ……アルセーヌ・ルパンだ……」

Angelique gave a smile:

アンジェリックは微笑んだ。

“You see, father, it’s only a joke, a hoax.”

「ほら、お父様、ただの冗談、悪ふざけですわ」

But the duke’s rage broke out afresh and he began to walk up and down, moving his arms:

しかし公爵の怒りは再び爆発し、彼は腕を振りながら部屋を歩き回り始めた。

“I shall go to the police!… The fellow can’t be allowed to make a fool of me in this way!…”

「警察へ行ってやる！……あの男にこんなふうに私を笑いものにさせておくわけにはいかん！……」

“If there’s any law left in the land, it must be stopped!”

「この国にまだ法が残っているなら、止めさせねばならん！」

Hyacinthe entered the room again. He brought two visiting-cards.

イヤサントが再び部屋に入ってきた。彼は二枚の名刺を持っていた。

“Chotois? Lepetit? Don’t know them.”

「ショトワ？ ルプティ？ 知らんな」

“They are both journalists, monsieur le duc.”

「お二人とも新聞記者でございます、公爵閣下」

“What do they want?”

「何の用だ？」

“They would like to speak to monsieur le duc with regard to … the marriage….”

「公爵閣下にお話ししたいそうです……その、結婚の件で……」

“Turn them out!” exclaimed the duke. “Kick them out!”

「追い出せ！」と公爵は叫んだ。「蹴り出せ！」

“And tell the porter not to admit scum of that sort to my house in future.”

「そして今後、あの手のクズを家に入れるなと門番に言っておけ」

“Please, father …” Angelique ventured to say.

「お願いです、お父様……」とアンジェリックは思い切って言った。

“As for you, shut up! If you had consented to marry one of your cousins when I wanted you to this wouldn’t have happened.”

「お前は黙っていろ！ 私が望んだ時に従兄弟の一人と結婚することに同意していれば、こんなことにはならなかったのだ」

The same evening, one of the two reporters printed, on the front page of his paper, a somewhat fanciful story of his expedition to the family mansion of the Sarzeau-Vendomes.

その晩、二人の記者の一人が、新聞の一面に、サルゾー＝ヴァンドーム家の館を訪れた時の、やや空想的な話を掲載した。

In the Rue de Varennes, and expatiated pleasantly upon the old nobleman’s wrathful protests.

ヴァレンヌ通りのその館での出来事と、老貴族の怒りに満ちた抗議を愉快そうに詳述したのである。

The next morning, another newspaper published an interview with Arsene Lupin which was supposed to have taken place in a lobby at the Opera.

翌朝、別の新聞が、オペラ座のロビーで行われたとされるアルセーヌ・ルパンへのインタビューを掲載した。

Arsene Lupin retorted in a letter to the editor:

アルセーヌ・ルパンは編集者への手紙で反論した。

That which gave a special piquancy to the affair and added immensely to the enjoyment of the friends of the family was the duke’s well-known character.

この事件に特別な刺激を与え、家族の友人たちの楽しみを大いに増したのは、公爵のよく知られた性格だった。

His pride and the uncompromising nature of his ideas and principles.

つまり彼の誇りと、思想や原則における妥協を許さない性質である。

Duc Jean was the last descendant of the Barons de Sarzeau, the most ancient family in Brittany.

ジャン公爵はサルゾー男爵家の最後の子孫であり、ブルターニュ最古の家系の一つであった。

He was the lineal descendant of that Sarzeau who, upon marrying a Vendome, refused to bear the new title which Louis XV forced upon him.

彼は、ヴァンドーム家の女性と結婚した際、ルイ十五世が押しつけた新しい称号を拒んだサルゾーの直系の子孫だった。

Until after he had been imprisoned for ten years in the Bastille; and he had abandoned none of the prejudices of the old regime.

その人物は十年間バスティーユに投獄されて初めて称号を受け入れた。そしてジャン公爵も、旧体制の偏見を少しも捨てていなかった。

In his youth, he followed the Comte de Chambord into exile.

若い頃、彼はシャンボール伯に従って亡命した。

In his old age, he refused a seat in the Chamber on the pretext that a Sarzeau could only sit with his peers.

老年になると、サルゾー家の者は同輩としか席を並べられないという口実で、議会の議席を拒んだ。

The incident stung him to the quick.

この事件は彼の急所を刺した。

Nothing could pacify him.

何ものも彼をなだめることはできなかった。

He cursed Lupin in good round terms, threatened him with every sort of punishment and rounded on his daughter:

彼は遠慮のない言葉でルパンを呪い、あらゆる罰をちらつかせ、娘に食ってかかった。

“There, if you had only married!… After all you had plenty of chances.”

「ほら見ろ、もしお前が結婚してさえいれば！……そもそもお前にはいくらでも機会があったのだ」

“Your three cousins, Mussy, d’Emboise and Caorches, are noblemen of good descent, allied to the best families, fairly well-off.”

「お前の三人の従兄弟、ミュシー、ダンボワーズ、カオルシュは、良い血筋の貴族で、名家と結びつき、そこそこ裕福だ」

“And they are still anxious to marry you.”

「しかも、彼らはいまだにお前との結婚を望んでいる」

“Why do you refuse them? Ah, because miss is a dreamer, a sentimentalist.”

「なぜ彼らを拒むのだ？ ああ、お嬢様は夢想家で、感傷家だからだ」

“And because her cousins are too fat, or too thin, or too coarse for her….”

「そして従兄弟たちが太りすぎているとか、痩せすぎているとか、粗野すぎるとか思っているからだ……」

She was, in fact, a dreamer.

実際、彼女は夢想家だった。

Left to her own devices from childhood, she had read all the books of chivalry, all the colourless romances of olden-time that littered the ancestral presses.

幼い頃から放っておかれた彼女は、先祖伝来の本棚に散らばっていた騎士道の本や、昔風の色あせたロマンスをすべて読んでいた。

And she looked upon life as a fairy-tale in which the beauteous maidens are always happy.

そして彼女は人生を、美しい乙女たちはいつも幸せになるおとぎ話のように見ていた。

While the others wait till death for the bridegroom who does not come.

一方で、そうでない者たちは、来ることのない花婿を死ぬまで待ち続けるのだと考えていた。

Why should she marry one of her cousins when they were only after her money, the millions which she had inherited from her mother?

彼らが狙っているのは、母から相続した何百万もの金だけなのに、なぜ従兄弟の一人と結婚しなければならないのか。

She might as well remain an old maid and go on dreaming….

それなら老嬢のまま、夢を見続ける方がましだった……。

She answered, gently:

彼女は優しく答えた。

“You will end by making yourself ill, father. Forget this silly business.”

「お父様、そのうちお体を悪くしてしまいます。このばかげた騒ぎは忘れてください」

But how could he forget it?

しかし、どうして彼がそれを忘れられるだろうか。

Every morning, some pin-prick renewed his wound.

毎朝、何かしらのちくりと刺す嫌がらせが、彼の傷を新たにした。

Three days running, Angelique received a wonderful sheaf of flowers, with Arsene Lupin’s card peeping from it.

三日続けて、アンジェリックは見事な花束を受け取り、そこにはアルセーヌ・ルパンの名刺がのぞいていた。

The duke could not go to his club but a friend accosted him:

公爵がクラブへ行くと、必ず友人が声をかけた。

“That was a good one to-day!”

「今日のは傑作だったな！」

“What was?”

「何のことだ？」

“Why, your son-in-law’s latest! Haven’t you seen it?”

「決まっているだろう、君の婿殿の最新作だよ！ 見ていないのか？」

And, the next day, he read:

そして翌日、彼は次のような記事を読んだ。

And, the day after, an advertisement.

さらにその翌日には、広告が出た。

Then an illustrated paper published a photographic scene: the duke, his daughter and his son-in-law sitting at a table playing three-handed auction-bridge.

次に、ある挿絵入り新聞が、三人でオークション・ブリッジをしている公爵、娘、婿の写真風場面を掲載した。

And the date also was announced with a great flourish of trumpets: the 4th of May.

そして日取りも大げさに発表された。五月四日である。

And particulars were given of the marriage-settlement.

さらに結婚契約の詳細まで示された。

Lupin showed himself wonderfully disinterested.

ルパンは驚くほど無欲な態度を示した。

He was prepared to sign, the newspapers said, with his eyes closed, without knowing the figure of the dowry.

新聞によれば、彼は持参金の額も知らずに、目をつぶって署名する覚悟があるということだった。

All these things drove the old duke crazy.

こうしたすべてのことが、老公爵を狂わせた。

His hatred of Lupin assumed morbid proportions.

彼のルパンへの憎しみは、病的な規模に達した。

Much as it went against the grain, he called on the prefect of police, who advised him to be on his guard:

気は進まなかったが、彼は警視総監を訪ねた。警視総監は彼に警戒するよう助言した。

“We know the gentleman’s ways; he is employing one of his favourite dodges.”

「我々はその紳士のやり口を知っています。彼はお気に入りの策略の一つを使っているのです」

“Forgive the expression, monsieur le duc, but he is ‘nursing‘ you. Don’t fall into the trap.”

「失礼な言い方をお許しください、公爵閣下。しかし彼はあなたをじわじわ追い込んでいるのです。罠に落ちてはいけません」

“What dodge? What trap?” asked the duke, anxiously.

「どんな策略だ？ どんな罠だ？」と公爵は不安げに尋ねた。

“He is trying to make you lose your head and to lead you, by intimidation, to do something which you would refuse to do in cold blood.”

「彼はあなたに冷静さを失わせ、脅しによって、冷静なら拒むようなことをさせようとしているのです」

“Still, M. Arsene Lupin can hardly hope that I will offer him my daughter’s hand!”

「しかし、アルセーヌ・ルパン氏が、私が娘を彼に差し出すことを期待するはずがない！」

“No, but he hopes that you will commit, to put it mildly, a blunder.”

「いいえ。しかし彼は、控えめに言って、あなたが失策を犯すことを望んでいます」

“What blunder?”

「どんな失策だ？」

“Exactly that blunder which he wants you to commit.”

「まさに、彼があなたに犯させたいその失策です」

“I think the best thing you can do, monsieur le duc, is to go home, or, if all this excitement worries you, to run down to the country and stay there quietly.”

「私が思うに、公爵閣下、最善なのはご自宅に戻ることです。もしこの騒ぎが気になるなら、田舎へ下って静かに過ごされることです」

This conversation only increased the old duke’s fears.

この会話は、老公爵の恐怖を増大させただけだった。

Lupin appeared to him in the light of a terrible person, who employed diabolical methods and kept accomplices in every sphere of society.

公爵には、ルパンが悪魔的な方法を使い、社会のあらゆる領域に共犯者を持つ恐るべき人物に見えた。

Prudence was the watchword.

慎重こそが合言葉となった。

And life, from that moment, became intolerable.

そしてその時から、生活は耐えがたいものになった。

The duke grew more crabbed and silent than ever and denied his door to all his old friends.

公爵は以前にも増して気難しく無口になり、古くからの友人すべてを門前払いにした。

And even to Angelique’s three suitors, her Cousins de Mussy, d’Emboise and de Caorches.

アンジェリックの三人の求婚者である従兄弟、ド・ミュシー、ダンボワーズ、ド・カオルシュさえも遠ざけた。

Who were none of them on speaking terms with the others, in consequence of their rivalry.

彼らは恋敵であったため、互いに口もきかない仲だった。

And who were in the habit of calling, turn and turn about, every week.

そして彼らは毎週、交代で訪問する習慣があった。

For no earthly reason, he dismissed his butler and his coachman.

何の理由もなく、彼は執事と御者を解雇した。

But he dared not fill their places, for fear of engaging creatures of Arsene Lupin’s.

しかし彼は、その後任を雇う勇気がなかった。アルセーヌ・ルパンの手先を雇ってしまうことを恐れたからだ。

And his own man, Hyacinthe, in whom he had every confidence, having had him in his service for over forty years, had to take upon himself the laborious duties of the stables and the pantry.

そのため、四十年以上仕え、彼が全幅の信頼を置いていた従僕イヤサントが、厩舎と配膳室の骨の折れる仕事まで引き受けねばならなかった。

“Come, father,” said Angelique, trying to make him listen to common-sense.

「ねえ、お父様」とアンジェリックは言い、父に常識を聞き入れさせようとした。

“I really can’t see what you are afraid of. No one can force me into this ridiculous marriage.”

「何を恐れていらっしゃるのか、私には本当にわかりません。誰も私をこんなばかげた結婚へ無理やり追い込むことはできません」

“Well, of course, that’s not what I’m afraid of.”

「もちろん、私が恐れているのはそれではない」

“What then, father?”

「では何を、お父様？」

“How can I tell? An abduction! A burglary! An act of violence!”

「どう言えばいい？ 誘拐だ！ 強盗だ！ 暴力行為だ！」

“There is no doubt that the villain is scheming something; and there is also no doubt that we are surrounded by spies.”

「あの悪党が何かを企んでいることは疑いない。そして我々がスパイに囲まれていることも疑いない」

One afternoon, he received a newspaper in which the following paragraph was marked in red pencil:

ある午後、彼は新聞を受け取った。その中の次の段落には赤鉛筆で印がつけられていた。

Ten minutes later, the duke sent his servant Hyacinthe to the post with three express messages.

十分後、公爵は従僕イヤサントに三通の速達を持たせて郵便局へ行かせた。

At four o’clock, in Angelique’s presence, he saw the three cousins.

四時に、アンジェリックの立ち会いのもと、彼は三人の従兄弟に会った。

Mussy, fat, heavy, pasty-faced; d’Emboise, slender, fresh-coloured and shy; Caorches, short, thin and unhealthy-looking.

ミュシーは太って重々しく、青白い顔をしていた。ダンボワーズは細身で血色がよく内気だった。カオルシュは背が低く痩せ、病弱そうだった。

All three, old bachelors by this time, lacking distinction in dress or appearance.

三人とも今では老いた独身男で、服装にも外見にも品格が欠けていた。

The meeting was a short one.

会合は短かった。

The duke had worked out his whole plan of campaign, a defensive campaign.

公爵は全体の作戦計画を練り上げていた。それは防御作戦だった。

Of which he set forth the first stage in explicit terms:

彼はその第一段階を明確な言葉で説明した。

“Angelique and I will leave Paris to-night for our place in Brittany.”

「アンジェリックと私は今夜パリを発ち、ブルターニュの屋敷へ向かう」

“I rely on you, my three nephews, to help us get away.”

「三人の甥たちよ、我々が逃げ出すのを手伝ってくれるよう頼りにしている」

“You, d’Emboise, will come and fetch us in your car, with the hood up.”

「ダンボワーズ、お前は幌を上げた車で我々を迎えに来るのだ」

“You, Mussy, will bring your big motor and kindly see to the luggage with Hyacinthe, my man.”

「ミュシー、お前は大型車を持ってきて、私の従僕イヤサントと一緒に荷物を見てくれ」

“You, Caorches, will go to the Gare d’Orleans and book our berths in the sleeping-car for Vannes by the 10.40 train.”

「カオルシュ、お前はオルレアン駅へ行き、十時四十分発ヴァンヌ行きの寝台車の寝台を予約するのだ」

“Is that settled?”

「それでよいな？」

The rest of the day passed without incident.

その日の残りは何事もなく過ぎた。

The duke, to avoid any accidental indiscretion, waited until after dinner to tell Hyacinthe to pack a trunk and a portmanteau.

公爵はうっかり情報が漏れるのを避けるため、夕食後まで待ってから、イヤサントに大きな旅行鞄と手提げ鞄を詰めるよう命じた。

Hyacinthe was to accompany them, as well as Angelique’s maid.

イヤサントは、アンジェリックの女中とともに彼らに同行することになっていた。

At nine o’clock, all the other servants went to bed, by their master’s order.

九時に、他の召使いたちは主人の命令で全員寝室へ下がった。

At ten minutes to ten, the duke, who was completing his preparations, heard the sound of a motor-horn.

十時十分前、準備を終えようとしていた公爵は、自動車の警笛の音を聞いた。

The porter opened the gates of the courtyard.

門番が中庭の門を開いた。

The duke, standing at the window, recognized d’Emboise’s landaulette:

窓辺に立っていた公爵は、ダンボワーズのランドーレット車だと認めた。

“Tell him I shall be down presently,” he said to Hyacinthe, “and let mademoiselle know.”

「すぐに下りると伝えろ」と彼はイヤサントに言った。「そしてお嬢様にも知らせるのだ」
