第35章

In the Shark’s body Pinocchio finds whom? Read this chapter, my children, and you will know.

サメの体内で、ピノッキオはいったい誰を見つけるのでしょうか。子どもたちよ、この章を読めば分かります。

Pinocchio, as soon as he had said good-by to his good friend, the Tunny, tottered away in the darkness and began to walk as well as he could toward the faint light which glowed in the distance.

ピノッキオは、よい友だちのマグロに別れを告げるとすぐに、暗闇の中をよろよろと歩き出し、遠くに光るかすかな光の方へ、できるだけ歩いていきました。

As he walked his feet splashed in a pool of greasy and slippery water, which had such a heavy smell of fish fried in oil that Pinocchio thought it was Lent.

歩いていると、足は脂っこくぬるぬるした水たまりで水しぶきを上げました。その水は油で揚げた魚のにおいがあまりに強く、ピノッキオは四旬節なのかと思ったほどでした。

The farther on he went, the brighter and clearer grew the tiny light.

先へ進めば進むほど、その小さな光はますます明るく、はっきりとしてきました。

On and on he walked till finally he found—I give you a thousand guesses, my dear children!

彼はどんどん歩き続け、ついに何かを見つけました。親愛なる子どもたちよ、千回当ててみてもよいですよ。

He found a little table set for dinner and lighted by a candle stuck in a glass bottle;

彼が見つけたのは、夕食の用意がされた小さなテーブルでした。そこはガラス瓶に差し込まれたろうそくで照らされていました。

and near the table sat a little old man, white as the snow, eating live fish.

そしてテーブルのそばには、雪のように白い小さな老人が座り、生きた魚を食べていました。

They wriggled so that, now and again, one of them slipped out of the old man’s mouth and escaped into the darkness under the table.

魚たちは身をよじっていたので、時々、そのうちの一匹が老人の口からすべり落ち、テーブルの下の暗闇へ逃げ込むのでした。

At this sight, the poor Marionette was filled with such great and sudden happiness that he almost dropped in a faint.

この光景を見て、かわいそうな操り人形は大きく突然の幸福に満たされ、気絶しそうになりました。

He wanted to laugh, he wanted to cry, he wanted to say a thousand and one things, but all he could do was to stand still, stuttering and stammering brokenly.

彼は笑いたく、泣きたく、千も一つも言いたいことがありました。しかしできたのは、立ち尽くして、途切れ途切れに口ごもり、どもることだけでした。

At last, with a great effort, he was able to let out a scream of joy and, opening wide his arms he threw them around the old man’s neck.

ついに、彼は大きな努力の末、喜びの叫び声をあげ、両腕を大きく広げて老人の首に抱きつきました。

“Oh, Father, dear Father! Have I found you at last? Now I shall never, never leave you again!”

「ああ、お父さん、親愛なるお父さん！ ついにお父さんを見つけたの？ もう二度と、二度とお父さんを離れません！」

“Are my eyes really telling me the truth?” answered the old man, rubbing his eyes. “Are you really my own dear Pinocchio?”

「私の目は本当に真実を見ているのか？」と老人は目をこすりながら答えました。「お前は本当に、私の大切なピノッキオなのか？」

“Yes, yes, yes! It is I! Look at me! And you have forgiven me, haven’t you?”

「そうです、そうです、そうです！ ぼくです！ ぼくを見てください！ それに、お父さんはぼくを許してくれたんですよね？」

“Oh, my dear Father, how good you are! And to think that I—Oh, but if you only knew how many misfortunes have fallen on my head and how many troubles I have had!”

「ああ、親愛なるお父さん、なんてお父さんはいい人なんでしょう！ それなのにぼくは――ああ、でも、ぼくの身にどれほど多くの不幸が降りかかり、どれほど多くの苦労をしたかを知ってくれたら！」

“Just think that on the day you sold your old coat to buy me my A-B-C book so that I could go to school, I ran away to the Marionette Theater,”

「考えてみてください。お父さんがぼくを学校へ行かせるために古い上着を売って、ぼくに読み書きの本を買ってくれたその日に、ぼくは操り人形劇場へ逃げ出したのです」

“and the proprietor caught me and wanted to burn me to cook his roast lamb!”

「すると劇場の主人がぼくを捕まえて、焼き羊を料理するためにぼくを燃やそうとしたのです！」

“He was the one who gave me the five gold pieces for you, but I met the Fox and the Cat, who took me to the Inn of the Red Lobster.”

「その人こそ、お父さんのために五枚の金貨をくれた人でした。でもぼくはキツネとネコに出会い、赤エビ亭へ連れて行かれました」

“There they ate like wolves and I left the Inn alone and I met the Assassins in the wood.”

「そこで彼らは狼のように食べ、ぼくは一人で宿を出ました。そして森の中で暗殺者たちに会いました」

“I ran and they ran after me, always after me, till they hanged me to the branch of a giant oak tree.”

「ぼくは走り、彼らはぼくを追いかけ、ずっと追いかけてきて、ついには巨大な樫の木の枝にぼくを吊るしたのです」

“Then the Fairy of the Azure Hair sent the coach to rescue me and the doctors, after looking at me, said, ‘If he is not dead, then he is surely alive,’”

「すると青い髪の妖精がぼくを救うために馬車を送ってくれ、医者たちはぼくを見ると、『もし死んでいないなら、きっと生きている』と言いました」

“and then I told a lie and my nose began to grow. It grew and it grew, till I couldn’t get it through the door of the room.”

「それからぼくは嘘をつき、鼻が伸び始めました。伸びて、伸びて、部屋の扉を通れないほどになったのです」

“And then I went with the Fox and the Cat to the Field of Wonders to bury the gold pieces.”

「それからぼくはキツネとネコと一緒に、金貨を埋めるために奇跡の野原へ行きました」

“The Parrot laughed at me and, instead of two thousand gold pieces, I found none.”

「オウムはぼくを笑いました。そして二千枚の金貨どころか、一枚も見つかりませんでした」

“When the Judge heard I had been robbed, he sent me to jail to make the thieves happy;”

「裁判官は、ぼくが盗まれたと聞くと、泥棒たちを喜ばせるために、ぼくを牢屋へ送りました」

“and when I came away I saw a fine bunch of grapes hanging on a vine. The trap caught me and the Farmer put a collar on me and made me a watchdog.”

「そこを出たあと、ぼくはつるにぶら下がった立派なブドウの房を見ました。罠にかかり、農夫はぼくに首輪をつけて番犬にしました」

“He found out I was innocent when I caught the Weasels and he let me go.”

「ぼくがイタチたちを捕まえると、彼はぼくが無実だと分かり、ぼくを逃がしてくれました」

“The Serpent with the tail that smoked started to laugh and a vein in his chest broke and so I went back to the Fairy’s house.”

「煙を出すしっぽを持ったヘビは笑い出し、胸の血管が切れてしまいました。それからぼくは妖精の家へ戻りました」

“She was dead, and the Pigeon, seeing me crying, said to me, ‘I have seen your father building a boat to look for you in America,’”

「妖精は死んでいました。ぼくが泣いているのを見たハトが、『君のお父さんが、アメリカまで君を探しに行くために船を作っているのを見たよ』と言いました」

“and I said to him, ‘Oh, if I only had wings!’ and he said to me, ‘Do you want to go to your father?’”

「ぼくが『ああ、翼があればいいのに！』と言うと、ハトは『お父さんのところへ行きたいのかい？』と言いました」

“and I said, ‘Perhaps, but how?’ and he said, ‘Get on my back. I’ll take you there.’”

「ぼくが『行きたいけど、どうやって？』と言うと、ハトは『私の背中に乗りなさい。連れて行ってあげよう』と言いました」

“We flew all night long, and next morning the fishermen were looking toward the sea, crying, ‘There is a poor little man drowning,’”

「ぼくたちは一晩中飛びました。そして翌朝、漁師たちが海の方を見て、『かわいそうな小さな男が溺れている』と叫んでいました」

“and I knew it was you, because my heart told me so and I waved to you from the shore—”

「ぼくにはそれがお父さんだと分かりました。心がそう教えてくれたからです。そしてぼくは岸からお父さんに手を振りました――」

“I knew you also,” put in Geppetto, “and I wanted to go to you; but how could I?”

「私にもお前だと分かった」とゼペットが口を挟みました。「そしてお前のところへ行きたかった。だが、どうすればよかったのだ？」

“The sea was rough and the whitecaps overturned the boat.”

「海は荒れていて、白波が船をひっくり返したのだ」

“Then a Terrible Shark came up out of the sea and, as soon as he saw me in the water, swam quickly toward me,”

「すると恐ろしいサメが海から現れ、私が水の中にいるのを見るとすぐに、私の方へすばやく泳いできた」

“put out his tongue, and swallowed me as easily as if I had been a chocolate peppermint.”

「舌を出し、まるで私がチョコレートミントであるかのように、簡単に飲み込んでしまったのだ」

“And how long have you been shut away in here?”

「それで、お父さんはここにどれくらい閉じ込められているのですか？」

“From that day to this, two long weary years—two years, my Pinocchio, which have been like two centuries.”

「あの日から今日まで、つらく長い二年だ。二年だよ、ピノッキオ。私には二世紀のように感じられた」

“And how have you lived? Where did you find the candle? And the matches with which to light it—where did you get them?”

「それで、どうやって暮らしていたのですか。ろうそくはどこで見つけたのですか。それに、それに火をつけるマッチはどこで手に入れたのですか？」

“You must know that, in the storm which swamped my boat, a large ship also suffered the same fate.”

「知っておきなさい。私の船を沈めた嵐の中で、大きな船も同じ運命にあったのだ」

“The sailors were all saved, but the ship went right to the bottom of the sea, and the same Terrible Shark that swallowed me, swallowed most of it.”

「船員たちはみな助かったが、その船は海の底へ沈んだ。そして私を飲み込んだ同じ恐ろしいサメが、その船の大部分を飲み込んだのだ」

“What! Swallowed a ship?” asked Pinocchio in astonishment.

「えっ！ 船を飲み込んだのですか？」とピノッキオは驚いて尋ねました。

“At one gulp. The only thing he spat out was the main-mast, for it stuck in his teeth.”

「一飲みでだ。吐き出したのは大きなマストだけだった。歯に引っかかったからだ」

“To my own good luck, that ship was loaded with meat, preserved foods, crackers, bread, bottles of wine, raisins, cheese, coffee, sugar, wax candles, and boxes of matches.”

「幸運なことに、その船には肉、保存食、クラッカー、パン、ワインの瓶、干しブドウ、チーズ、コーヒー、砂糖、ろうそく、そしてマッチ箱が積まれていた」

“With all these blessings, I have been able to live happily on for two whole years, but now I am at the very last crumbs.”

「こうした恵みのおかげで、私はまる二年もの間なんとか幸せに暮らしてこられた。しかし今は、最後のパンくずにまで来てしまった」

“Today there is nothing left in the cupboard, and this candle you see here is the last one I have.”

「今日、食器棚には何も残っていない。そしてここに見えるこのろうそくが、私に残された最後の一本なのだ」

“And then?”

「それからどうなるのですか？」

“And then, my dear, we’ll find ourselves in darkness.”

「それから、かわいい子よ、私たちは暗闇の中に取り残されることになる」

“Then, my dear Father,” said Pinocchio, “there is no time to lose. We must try to escape.”

「それなら、親愛なるお父さん」とピノッキオは言いました。「ぐずぐずしている暇はありません。逃げる方法を試さなければなりません」

“Escape! How?”

「逃げるだと！ どうやって？」

“We can run out of the Shark’s mouth and dive into the sea.”

「サメの口から走り出て、海へ飛び込めばいいのです」

“You speak well, but I cannot swim, my dear Pinocchio.”

「言うことは立派だが、私は泳げないのだよ、親愛なるピノッキオ」

“Why should that matter? You can climb on my shoulders and I, who am a fine swimmer, will carry you safely to the shore.”

「それが何の問題でしょうか。お父さんはぼくの肩に乗ればいいのです。泳ぎの得意なぼくが、安全に岸まで運びます」

“Dreams, my boy!” answered Geppetto, shaking his head and smiling sadly.

「夢のような話だよ、坊や」とゼペットは頭を振り、悲しげに微笑みながら答えました。

“Do you think it possible for a Marionette, a yard high, to have the strength to carry me on his shoulders and swim?”

「一ヤードほどの高さしかない操り人形に、私を肩に乗せて泳ぐ力があると思うのか？」

“Try it and see! And in any case, if it is written that we must die, we shall at least die together.”

「試してみれば分かります！ それに、もしぼくたちが死ぬ運命だとしても、少なくとも一緒に死ぬことができます」

Not adding another word, Pinocchio took the candle in his hand and going ahead to light the way, he said to his father:

それ以上何も言わず、ピノッキオはろうそくを手に取り、道を照らすために先へ進みながら、父に言いました。

“Follow me and have no fear.”

「ぼくについて来てください。そして怖がらないでください」

They walked a long distance through the stomach and the whole body of the Shark.

二人はサメの胃と体全体の中を、長い距離歩きました。

When they reached the throat of the monster, they stopped for a while to wait for the right moment in which to make their escape.

怪物の喉にたどり着くと、二人は逃げ出すのにちょうどよい瞬間を待つため、しばらく立ち止まりました。

I want you to know that the Shark, being very old and suffering from asthma and heart trouble, was obliged to sleep with his mouth open.

知っておいてほしいのですが、そのサメはとても年老いていて、ぜんそくと心臓の病気を患っていたため、口を開けたまま眠らなければならなかったのです。

Because of this, Pinocchio was able to catch a glimpse of the sky filled with stars, as he looked up through the open jaws of his new home.

そのため、ピノッキオは新しい住みかの開いたあごの間から見上げると、星でいっぱいの空をちらりと見ることができました。

“The time has come for us to escape,” he whispered, turning to his father.

「逃げる時が来ました」と彼は父の方を向いてささやきました。

“The Shark is fast asleep. The sea is calm and the night is as bright as day.”

「サメはぐっすり眠っています。海は穏やかで、夜は昼のように明るいです」

“Follow me closely, dear Father, and we shall soon be saved.”

「親愛なるお父さん、ぼくのすぐ後について来てください。そうすれば、ぼくたちはすぐに助かります」

No sooner said than done. They climbed up the throat of the monster till they came to that immense open mouth.

言うが早いか、二人は行動しました。怪物の喉を登り、巨大に開いた口までたどり着きました。

There they had to walk on tiptoes, for if they tickled the Shark’s long tongue he might awaken—and where would they be then?

そこで二人はつま先立ちで歩かなければなりませんでした。もしサメの長い舌をくすぐって目を覚まさせてしまったら、その時二人はどうなってしまうでしょうか。

The tongue was so wide and so long that it looked like a country road.

その舌はあまりに広く長かったので、まるで田舎道のように見えました。

The two fugitives were just about to dive into the sea when the Shark sneezed very suddenly.

二人の逃亡者が海へ飛び込もうとしたその時、サメが突然くしゃみをしました。

And, as he sneezed, he gave Pinocchio and Geppetto such a jolt that they found themselves thrown on their backs and dashed once more and very unceremoniously into the stomach of the monster.

サメはくしゃみをした拍子に、ピノッキオとゼペットに強い衝撃を与えました。そのため二人は仰向けに投げ出され、またもやとても無造作に怪物の胃の中へ投げ戻されてしまいました。

To make matters worse, the candle went out and father and son were left in the dark.

さらに悪いことに、ろうそくが消え、父と子は暗闇の中に取り残されました。

“And now?” asked Pinocchio with a serious face.

「それで、今は？」とピノッキオは真剣な顔で尋ねました。

“Now we are lost.”

「今度こそ、私たちはおしまいだ」

“Why lost? Give me your hand, dear Father, and be careful not to slip!”

「どうしておしまいなんですか。手をください、お父さん。そして滑らないように気をつけてください！」

“Where will you take me?”

「どこへ私を連れて行くつもりだ？」

“We must try again. Come with me and don’t be afraid.”

「もう一度やってみなければなりません。ぼくについて来てください。怖がらないで」

With these words Pinocchio took his father by the hand and, always walking on tiptoes, they climbed up the monster’s throat for a second time.

そう言ってピノッキオは父の手を取り、二人はつま先立ちで、もう一度怪物の喉を登っていきました。

They then crossed the whole tongue and jumped over three rows of teeth.

それから二人は舌全体を渡り、三列の歯を跳び越えました。

But before they took the last great leap, the Marionette said to his father:

しかし最後の大きな跳躍をする前に、操り人形は父に言いました。

“Climb on my back and hold on tightly to my neck. I’ll take care of everything else.”

「ぼくの背中に乗って、首にしっかりつかまってください。あとは全部ぼくに任せてください」

As soon as Geppetto was comfortably seated on his shoulders, Pinocchio, very sure of what he was doing, dived into the water and started to swim.

ゼペットが彼の肩にしっかり座るとすぐに、ピノッキオは自分の行動に確信を持って水へ飛び込み、泳ぎ始めました。

The sea was like oil, the moon shone in all splendor, and the Shark continued to sleep so soundly that not even a cannon shot would have awakened him.

海は油のように穏やかで、月はまばゆく輝いていました。そしてサメは、たとえ大砲の音が鳴っても目を覚まさないほど、深く眠り続けていました。
