SCENE.—A great terrace in the Palace of Herod, set above the banqueting-hall.
【場面】- ヘロデの宮殿にある、宴会場の上に設けられた大きなテラス。
Some soldiers are leaning over[寄りかかって] the balcony.
何人かの兵士がバルコニーにもたれかかっている。
To the right there is a gigantic staircase, to the left, at the back, an old cistern[(屋上などの)水槽] surrounded by a wall of green bronze. Moonlight.
右手には巨大な階段があり、左手奥には緑の青銅の壁で囲まれた古い貯水池がある。月の光。
THE YOUNG SYRIAN
How beautiful is the Princess Salomé to-night!
若いシリア人
今夜のサロメ姫はなんて美しいのでしょう!
THE PAGE OF HERODIAS
Look at the moon! How strange the moon seems! She is like a woman rising from a tomb.
ヘロディアの給仕
あの月を見ろ！何て奇妙な月なんだ！墓からよみがえった女のようだ。
She is like a dead woman. You would fancy[気がする] she was looking for dead things.
まるで死んだ女のようだ。彼女は死者を探しているようだ。
THE YOUNG SYRIAN
She has a strange look. She is like a little princess who wears a yellow veil, and whose feet are of silver.
若いシリア人
（たしかに）妙な顔をしている。黄色いベールをまとい、足元は銀色の小さなお姫様といった感じだな。
She is like a princess who has little white doves[鳩] for feet. You would fancy she was dancing.
小さな白い鳩みたいな足のお姫様のようだ。まるで踊っているような気がする。

She is like a woman who is dead. She moves very slowly.

What an uproar! Who are those wild beasts howling?

SECOND SOLDIER
The Jews. They are always like that. They are disputing[(一時的に感情的になって)論争する] about their religion.
第二の兵士
ユダヤ人たちだよ。彼らはいつもそうだ。自分たちの宗教について議論しているのさ。
FIRST SOLDIER
Why do they dispute about their religion?
第一の兵士
なぜ彼らは自分たちの宗教で口論するんだ？
SECOND SOLDIER
I cannot tell. They are always doing it.

The Pharisees, for instance, say that there are angels, and the Sadducees declare that angels do not exist.

You are always looking at her. You look at her too much. It is dangerous to look at people in such fashion. Something terrible may happen.
ヘロディアの給仕
お前はいつもサロメ姫を見ている、見すぎだよ。そんなふうに人を見るのは危険だ。何か恐ろしいことでも起きそうだ。
THE YOUNG SYRIAN
She is very beautiful to-night.

FIRST SOLDIER
The Tetrarch[古代ローマ帝国の四分領太守] has a sombre[陰気な, 憂鬱な] look.
第一の兵士
領主様は憂鬱そうだな。
SECOND SOLDIER
Yes; he has a sombre look.
第二の兵士
そうだね。憂鬱そうだ。
FIRST SOLDIER
He is looking at something.
第一の兵士
何かを見ている。

He is looking at some one.

At whom is he looking?

THE YOUNG SYRIAN
How pale[青白い] the Princess is!
若いシリア人
王女様の顔色が真っ青だ！
Never have I seen her so pale. She is like the shadow of a white rose in a mirror of silver.
あんなに青ざめているのを見たことがない。まるで銀鏡の中の白い薔薇の影のようだ。

You must not look at her. You look too much at her.

FIRST SOLDIER
Herodias[ヘロデ・アンティパスの妻] has filled the cup of the Tetrarch.

THE CAPPADOCIAN
Is that the Queen Herodias, she who wears a black mitre sewn with pearls, and whose hair is powdered[粉をかけた] with blue dust?[粉末]
カッパドキア人
あれがヘロディアス王妃ですか？ 真珠を縫いつけた黒いミトレ[司教が公式の機会にかぶる典礼用かぶりもの]

FIRST SOLDIER
Yes; that is Herodias, the Tetrarch’s wife.

SECOND SOLDIER
The Tetrarch is very fond of wine.He has wine of three sorts.
第二の兵士
領主様はワインが大好きで、３種類のワインを持っておられる。
One which is brought from the Island of Samothrace, and is purple like the cloak[外套] of Cæsar.
その一つでサモトラキ島から持ち込まれたものなどは、カエサルのマントのような紫色をしている。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
I have never seen Cæsar.

私はまだカエサルを見たことがない。
SECOND SOLDIER
Another that comes from a town called Cyprus, and is yellow like gold.
第二の兵士
もう一つはキプロスという町産のものは黄金のように黄色い。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
I love gold.

黄金は大好きだ。
SECOND SOLDIER
And the third is a wine of Sicily. That wine is red like blood.

THE NUBIAN
The gods of my country are very fond of blood. Twice in the year we sacrifice to them young men and maidens;[処女] fifty young men and a hundred maidens.

But it seems we never give them quite enough, for they are very harsh[厳しい, 残酷な] to us.

In my country there are no gods left. The Romans have driven them out.

There are some who say that they have hidden themselves in the mountains, but I do not believe it.
神たちは山の中に隠れていると言う者もいるが、私は信じない。
Three nights I have been on the mountains seeking them everywhere. I did not find them. And at last I called them by their names, and they did not come. I think they are dead.
3夜をかけて、私はあちこちの山の上で神々を捜し求めたけれど、見つからなかった。最後には私は神々の名前を呼んだが、彼らは来なかった。死んだんだと思う。
FIRST SOLDIER
The Jews worship a God that you cannot see.
第一の兵士
ユダヤ人は見ることのできない唯一の神を崇拝している。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
I cannot understand that.

理解できないね。
FIRST SOLDIER
In fact, they only believe in things that you cannot see.
第一の兵士

That seems to me altogether[完全に] ridiculous.

THE VOICE OF JOKANAAN
After me shall come another mightier[強大な] than I. I am not worthy so much as to unloose[解く] the latchet[ひも] of his shoes.

When he cometh,[来るの古語] the solitary places shall be glad. They shall blossom like the lily.

The eyes of the blind shall see the day,[光を見る] and the ears of the deaf shall be opened.

The new-born child shall put his hand upon the dragon’s lair,[(野獣の)巣] he shall lead the lions by their manes.
生まれたばかりのその子は、龍の棲み処の上にその手を置き、獅子たちのたてがみを持ち導くことだろう。
SECOND SOLDIER
Make him be silent. He is always saying ridiculous things.
第二の兵士
あいつを黙らせるんだ。いつもばかげたことばかり言っている。
FIRST SOLDIER
No, no. He is a holy man. He is very gentle, too. Every day, when I give him to eat he thanks me.
第一の兵士
いや、そうではない。彼は聖人です。それにとても優しい。毎日、私が彼に食事をあげると、彼は私に感謝してくれるよ。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
Who is he?
カッパドキア人

FIRST SOLDIER
A prophet.

He was clothed in camel’s hair, and round his loins[腰部] he had a leathern belt.
らくだの毛をまとい、腰の周りに革のベルトを巻いていた。
He was very terrible to look upon.
見るからに恐ろしい人だったよ。
A great multitude used to follow him. He even had disciples.
大勢の群衆が彼に従っていたものだよ。弟子もいた。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
What is he talking of?
カッパドキア人
何の話をしているんだい？
FIRST SOLDIER
We can never tell. Sometimes he says terrible things, but it is impossible[不可能] to understand what he says.
第一の兵士
さっぱりわからないんだよ。たまに恐ろしいことを言っているようだが、何を言っているのかまったく理解できないのさ。
THE CAPPADOCIAN
May one see him?
カッパドキア人
彼に会うことはできるのかい？
FIRST SOLDIER
No. The Tetrarch has forbidden it.

いや。領主様が禁じている。
THE YOUNG SYRIAN
The Princess has hidden her face behind her fan![うちわ]

Her little white hands are fluttering like doves that fly to their dove-cots.

It is an old cistern.

THE CAPPADOCIAN
An old cistern! It must be very unhealthy.
