At first I could hardly see anything, it was so dim inside. But after a little I made out[～をようやく見分ける] a low bed against the wall, under a small barred window.
最初は、中が薄暗くて何も見えなかった。でも、しばらくすると、小さな鉄格子のついた窓の下に、壁に沿って低いベッドが置かれているのがなんとか見えるようになった。
On the bed, staring down at the floor between his feet, sat the Hermit, his head resting[～によりかかる] in his hands.

“Well, Luke,” said the Doctor in a kindly voice, “they don’t give you much light in here, do they?”

Very slowly the Hermit looked up from the floor.
世捨て人はゆっくりと床から顔を上げた。
“Hulloa, John Dolittle. What brings you here?”
「こんにちは、ジョン・ドリトル。どうしてここへ来たの？」
“I’ve come to see you. I would have been here sooner, only I didn’t hear about all this till a few minutes ago.[数分前まで]
「君に会いに来たんだよ。もっと早く来ればよかったのだが、ほんのさっきまでこんなことは聞いてなかったもんでな。
I went to your hut to ask you if you would join[加わる] me on a voyage;
一緒に航海に行かないかと、君の小屋に行ったんだよ。
and when I found it empty I had no idea where you could be. I am dreadfully sorry to hear about your bad luck. I’ve come to see if there is anything I can do.”
空っぽになっている小屋を見ても、君がどこにいるのか見当もつかなかったよ。君の不運を聞いて、とても残念に思ってな。わしに何かできないかと思って来たんじゃよ」
Luke shook his head.
ルカは首を振った。
“No, I don’t imagine there is anything can be done. They’ve caught me at last. That’s the end of it, I suppose.”
「いえ、もうどうしようもないでしょう。ついに捕まってしまった。これで終わりだと思います」
He got up stiffly and started walking up and down the little room.
ルカはぎこちなく立ち上がり、小さな部屋をいったりきたり歩き始めた。
“In a way I’m glad it’s over,” said he.
「ある意味、終わって良かったよ。」と彼は言った。
”I never got any peace, always thinking they were after me[追い求める]—afraid to speak to anyone. They were bound to[～に決まっている] get me in the end—Yes, I’m glad it’s over.”
「いつも捕まるのではないかと、私は心の平安を得ることができなかったし、恐くて誰にも話すこともできなかったんです。最後には必ず捕ま（え）るに違いないと思っていたんです。あぁ、終わって良かったと」
Then the Doctor talked to Luke for more than half an hour, trying to cheer him up; while I sat around wondering what I ought to say and wishing I could do something.
それから先生は30分以上ルカを励まそうと話した。その間、私は何を言うべきか、何かできることはないかと考えながら座っていた。
At last the Doctor said he wanted to see Bob; and we knocked upon the door and were let out by the policeman.
とうとう先生はボブに会いたいと言い、私たちはドアをノックして警官に出してもらった。
“Bob,” said the Doctor to the big bulldog in the passage, “come out with me into the porch. I want to ask you something.”
「ボブ」と先生は通路にいる大きなブルドックに言った。「いっしょに入口まで出ておくれ。聞きたいことがあるんだ」
“How is he, Doctor?” asked Bob as we walked down the corridor into the Court-house porch.
「先生、ご主人さまはどうですか？」と裁判所の玄関
に続く廊下を歩きながらボブは尋ねた。
“Oh, Luke’s all right. Very miserable of course, but he’s all right.
「あぁ、ルカは大丈夫だよ。もちろん、とてもみじめだが、彼は大丈夫だ。
Now tell me, Bob: you saw this business happen, didn’t you? You were there when the man was killed, eh?”
さて、教えてくれ、ボブ。君はこの事件の起こりを見ていたんだろう？男が殺された時、君はそこにいたんだろう？」
“I was, Doctor,” said Bob, “and I tell you—”

“All right,” the Doctor interrupted, “that’s all I want to know for the present. There isn’t time to tell me more now. The trial is just going to begin.
「わかったよ」と先生は口をはさんだ。「今のところ、知りたいのはそれだけだ。今はそれ以上のことを聞く時間がない。もうすぐ裁判が始まるからな。
There are the judge and the lawyers coming up the steps.
裁判官と弁護士たちが階段を上ってくる。
Now listen, Bob: I want you to stay with me when I go into the court-room. And whatever I tell you to do, do it. Do you understand?
いいかいボブ、よく聞くんだ。わしが法廷に出る時、そばに付いていて欲しい。そして、わしがやれといったことはどんなことでもやるんだ。わかったかね？
Don’t make any scenes.[大騒ぎする] Don’t bite anybody, no matter what they may say about Luke.
決して暴れたりするんじゃないぞ。ルカのことを何と言われようと誰にも噛みつくんじゃないぞ。
Just behave perfectly quietly and answer any question I may ask you—truthfully. Do you understand?”
ちゃんと、静かにふるまって、わしがどんな質問をしても正直に答えて欲しい。わかったかね？」
“Very well. But do you think you will be able to get him off,[刑罰を免れる] Doctor?” asked Bob. “He’s a good man, Doctor. He really is. There never was a better.”
「かしこまりました。でも先生、ご主人さまを助け出【す】せそうですか？」とボブは尋ねた。「彼は善人です、先生。彼は本当に善人です。あんないい人はいません。」
“We’ll see, we’ll see, Bob. It’s a new thing I’m going to try. I’m not sure the judge will allow it. But—well, we’ll see. It’s time to go into the court-room now.
「わかった、わかったよ、ボブ。新しいことをやってみようと思うんだ。裁判官が許してくれるかどうかはわからないが。でも、まぁ、そのうちわかる。そろそろ法廷に入る時間だ。
Don’t forget what I told you. Remember: for Heaven’s sake don’t start biting any one or you’ll get us all put out and spoil everything.”
わしが言ったことを忘れるんじゃないぞ。覚えておいて欲しい。お願いだから誰かを咬んだりしないで欲しい。そうしないと、おまえのせいでわしたち全員が追い出されてしまうこととなってすべてが台無しになってしまう」
