found the wedding-ring which I gave my wife lying in a crack in the floor.

“Then,” said the countess, “the ring which your wife carries….”

“That is another ring, which she ordered in exchange for the real one.
「それは彼女が本物の代わりに注文したもう一つの指輪です。
Acting on my instructions,[指令, 指図] Bernard, my man, after long searching,
私の命令で動いていた、使用人のバーナードが長い間探し回り、
ended by discovering in the outskirts[郊外] of Paris, where he now lives, the little jeweller to whom she went.
現在彼が住んでいるパリの外れに、 イボンヌが通っていた小さな宝石屋を発見したのです。
This man remembers perfectly and is willing to bear witness[〈事件の〉・証人となる] that his customer did not tell him to engrave a date, but a name.
その宝石商は完璧に覚えていて、その客が日付ではなく名前を彫るように言ったことを証言したいと言っています。
He has forgotten the name, but the man who used to work with him in his shop may be able to remember it.
（彫った）名前は忘れてしまっていたが、かつて店で一緒に働いていた職人[人物]なら覚えているかもしれないとのことでした。
This working jeweller has been informed[知らせられ] by letter that I required his services[尽力を要求する] and he replied yesterday, placing himself at my disposal.
私はこの宝石細工人に、助けてもらえないかと手紙で知らせて、昨日、協力してくれる[好きなように身を任せる]という返事をくれたのです。
Bernard went to fetch him at nine o’clock this morning.
バーナードが今朝9時に彼を迎えに行きました。
They are both waiting in my study.”

He turned to his wife:

“Will you give me that ring of your own free will[自由意志で]?”

“You know,” she said, “from the other night, that it won’t come off my finger.”
「ご存知でしょう」とイボンヌは言った。「この前の晩から、指から外れないのです」
“In that case, can I have the man up? He has the necessary implements[用具, 器具] with him.”
「それならば、宝石細工人を上に来させてもいいかい？彼は必要な道具を持っているからな」
“Yes,” she said, in a voice faint as a whisper.
「ええ」と彼女はささやくような弱弱しい声で言った。
She was resigned.
イボンヌは諦めた。
She conjured up[眼前に思い出す] the future as in a vision:
彼女は幻のように未来を思い起こした。
the scandal, the decree of divorce pronounced against herself, the custody of the child awarded to the father;
スキャンダルや彼女に宣告される離婚の判決、子供の養育権が父親に与えられ…
and she accepted this,
そしてこれを受け入れたら、
thinking that she would carry off her son, that she would go with him to the ends of the earth[何処までも] and that the two of them would live alone together and happy….

Her mother-in-law said:
義母は言った。
“You have been very thoughtless,[思慮のない] Yvonne.”
「イボンヌ、あなたは大そう軽率だったわね」
Yvonne was on the point of confessing to her and asking for her protection.
イボンヌは今にも彼女に告白して保護を求めそうになった。
But what was the good? How could the Comtesse d’Origny possibly believe her innocent? She made no reply.
でも、それが何になるだろう？どうしてドリニー伯爵夫人が彼女の無実を信じることができるだろう？彼女は返事をしなかった。
Besides, the count at once returned, followed by his servant and by a man carrying a bag of tools under his arm.
その上、すぐに伯爵が戻ってきて、召使いと小脇に道具の袋を抱えた男がそれに続いた。
And the count said to the man:
伯爵は男に言った。
“You know what you have to do?”
「何をすればいいか分かっているね?」
“Yes,” said the workman. “It’s to cut a ring that’s grown too small…. That’s easily done…. A touch of the nippers….”
「はい」と職人は言った。「小さくなった指輪を切る…。簡単なもんですよ…。ニッパーを当てて…」
“And then you will see,” said the count, “if the inscription[銘刻, 銘] inside the ring was the one you engraved.”
「切り落としたら見てくれ」「指輪の内側に刻んだ文字が君が彫ったものかどうかを」と伯爵は言った。
Yvonne looked at the clock.
イボンヌは時計を見た。
It was ten minutes to eleven.
10時50分だった。
She seemed to hear, somewhere in the house, a sound of voices raised in argument; and, in spite of herself, she felt a thrill of hope.
彼女は家のどこかで言い争う声を聞いたような気がして思わず、希望でゾクゾクするのを感じた。
Perhaps Velmont has succeeded….
もしかしたらベルモントが首尾よくやってきたのかも…。
But the sound was renewed;[更新する] and she perceived[知覚する] that it was produced by some costermongers[呼び売り商人] passing under her window and moving farther on.
しかしまた新たに音がすると、それは窓の下を通りすぎる[通ってさらに先へ進んでいく]何人かの野菜売りたちの声だと[作り出されたものだと]気づいた。
It was all over.[すべて終わりだった] Horace Velmont had been unable to assist her.
望みは消えてしまった。 ホーレス・ベルモントは彼女を助けることができなかったのだ。
And she understood that, to recover her child, she must rely upon[依存する] her own strength, for the promises of others are vain.
イボンヌは子どもを取り戻すには、自分の力を頼るしかないことを悟った。他人の約束など虚しいものだったのだ。
She made a movement of recoil.
彼女は後ずさりをした。
She had felt the workman’s heavy hand on her hand; and that hateful touch revolted[胸が悪くなる] her.
職人のがっしりとした手が彼女の手に触れるのを感じ、その忌々しい感触に彼女は嫌悪感を覚えた。
The man apologized, awkwardly. The count said to his wife:
その男はぎこちなく謝った。伯爵がイボンヌに言った。
“You must make up your mind, you know.”
「覚悟を決め【る】なければならない、分かっているだろう」
Then she put out her slim and trembling hand to the workman, who took it, turned it over[ひっくり返す] and rested[置く,載せる] it on the table, with the palm upward.
イボンヌは、ほっそりした震える手を職人に差し出した。彼はその手を取り、裏返し、手のひらを上にしてテーブルの上に置いた。
Yvonne felt the cold steel.
イボンヌは冷たい鋼を感じた。
She longed to die, then and there; and, at once attracted by that idea of death,
その場で死んでしまいたかった。そして、すぐにその死への思いに惹かれ、
she thought of the poisons which she would buy and which would send her to sleep almost without her knowing it.
毒薬を買って来れば、その毒薬がほとんど無意識のうちに眠らせてくれるのではと思った。
The operation did not take long.
作業に時間はかからなかった。
Inserted on the slant, the little steel pliers pushed back the flesh, made room for[～のためのスペースをあける] themselves and bit[噛む] the ring.
斜めに挿入された小さなスチール製ペンチは肉を押し戻し、隙間を作り、リングを挟んだ。
A strong effort … and the ring broke.
一気に力が入った…そして指輪は壊れた。
The two ends had only to be separated to remove the ring from the finger. The workman did so.
指から指輪を外すには、両端を引き離すだけだった。そして職人はそうした。
The count exclaimed, in triumph:[得意顔で]
伯爵は勝ち誇って叫んだ。
“At last! Now we shall see!… The proof is there! And we are all witnesses….”
「とうとう！さあ、見てみよう！…証拠はそこにある！そして私たちみんなが証人だ…」
He snatched up the ring and looked at the inscription.[碑文]
彼は指輪をひったくって刻まれた文字を見た。
A cry of amazement escaped him.
驚きの叫び声が彼の口からこぼれ出た。
The ring bore[帯びる,記載がある] the date of his marriage to Yvonne: “23rd of October”!…
指輪にはイボンヌとの結婚の日付が記されていた。「10月23日」と…！
