The widow went out with her nephew, leaving Lupin fastened down to the bed.
未亡人は、ルパンをベッドに縛り付けたまま、甥と一緒に出て行った。
He at once moved his free arm and tried to release himself;
ルパンはすぐに自由になる方の腕を動かしてロープをはずそうとした[自分を解放しようとした]
but he realized,[はっきり理解する, 悟る] at the first attempt, that he would never have the strength to break the wire strands that bound him.

Exhausted with fever and pain, what could he do in the twenty minutes or so that were left to him before Ganimard’s arrival?

Nor did he count upon his friends.
ルパンは、仲間を当てにする事もなかった。
True, he had been thrice[三たび] saved from death; but this was evidently due to[～の結果] an astounding series of[連続] accidents and not to any interference[干渉, 口出し] on the part of his allies.
確かに、彼は3度も死から救われたが、それは驚くべき偶然の連続によることは明らかで、味方の妨害によるものではないはずだ。
Otherwise they would not have contented themselves with these extraordinary[異常な, 風変わりな] manifestations,[示威行動] but would have rescued him for good and all.

No, he must abandon all hope.

Ganimard was coming. Ganimard would find him there. It was inevitable.

There was no getting away from the fact.

And the prospect[予想, 見通し] of what was coming irritated him singularly.[並はずれて, 非常に]

He already heard his old enemy’s gibes ringing in his ears.
彼の耳にはすでに、仇敵のあざけりが聞こえていた。
He foresaw[予知する, 見越す] the roars[うなる, 鳴り響く] of laughter with which the incredible news would be greeted on the morrow.

To be arrested in action,[戦闘中] so to speak, on the battlefield, by an imposing detachment[部隊] of adversaries,[敵] was one thing:

but to be arrested, or rather picked up, scraped up,[かき集める,捻出する] gathered up, in such condition, was really too silly.
こんな状態で捕まる、と言うより、拾[う]われ、かき集め【る】られ、絞り上げ【る】られる、というのは、あまりにも馬鹿げている。
And Lupin, who had so often scoffed at others, felt all the ridicule that was falling to his share in[割り当て] this ending of the Dugrival business,
そして、いままで他人をバカにすることが多かったルパンは、今回のデュグリバル事件の結末で、自分の身に降りかかる嘲笑をすべて感じていた。
all the bathos[陳腐さ] of allowing himself to be caught[捕まることを許し] in the widow’s infernal trap and finally of being “served up”[食卓に出す] to the police like a dish of game,[猟鳥の肉] roasted to a turn[回転させる] and nicely seasoned.[味つけした, 調味した]

“Blow the widow!” he growled. “I had rather she had cut my throat and done with it.”

He pricked up his ears. Some one was moving in the next room.
彼は耳をそばだてた。隣の部屋で誰かが動いていた。
Ganimard! No. Great as his eagerness[熱意、意欲] would be, he could not be there yet.
ガニマールか！いや、どんなにあわてて駆けつけたとしても、まだつかないはずだ。
Besides, Ganimard would not have acted like that, would not have opened the door as gently as that other person was doing.
それに、ガニマールはあんな歩き方はしないし、（今、ガニマールではない人物がそうしているように）そっとドアを開けることなどしないだろう。
What other person? Lupin remembered the three miraculous interventions[介入] to which he owed his life.
誰だろうか？ルパンは、命拾いした3つの奇跡（的な横やり）を思い出した。
Was it possible[あるいは然らん] that there was really somebody who had protected him against the widow, and that[しかも] that somebody was now attempting to rescue him? But, if so, who?
もしかして、未亡人から自分を守ってくれた人が本当にいて、その人物が今、自分を助けようとしているのだろうか？しかし、もしそうだとしたら、いったい誰が？
Unseen by Lupin, the stranger stooped[前かがみになる] behind the bed.
その見知らぬ人物はベッドの後ろにかがんでいたので、ルパンには見えなかった。
Lupin heard the sound of the pliers attacking[攻撃する] the wire strands and releasing him little by little.
ルパンは、ペンチで鉄線を切りながら、少しずつ自分を自由にしていく音を聞いた。
First his chest was freed, then his arms, then his legs.
最初に胸が自由になり、次に腕、そして足が解かれた。
And a voice said to him:
そして声が聞こえた。
“You must get up and dress.”
「起きて服を着るのよ」
Feeling very weak, he half-raised himself in bed at the moment when the stranger rose from her stooping posture.
衰弱しきっていたルパンが、やっとのことでベッドの上で半身を起こしたときには、見知らぬその人物も、かがんだ姿勢から立ち上がっていた。
“Who are you?” he whispered. “Who are you?”
「誰ですか？」ルパンはつぶやいた。「誰なんです？」
And a great surprise over came him.
とてつもなく大きな驚きがルパンを襲った。
By his side stood a woman, a woman dressed in black, with a lace shawl over her head, covering part of her face.
傍らには、黒い服を着て、レースのショールを頭からかぶり、顔の一部を隠した女性が立っていた。
And the woman, as far as he could judge,[判断する] was young and of a graceful and slender stature.[身長,背丈]
その女性は、見た限りでは、若く、優美で華奢な体つきをしていた。
“Who are you?” he repeated.
「誰です？」ルパンは繰り返した。
“You must come now,” said the woman. “There’s no time to lose.”
「さあ、早くして」と女性は言った。「時間がないわ」
“Can I?” asked Lupin, making a desperate effort.[死力を尽くす] “I doubt if I have the strength.”[体力, 強度]
「できるかな？」と言い、ルパンは死にものぐるいになった。「そんな力は残ってそうにない」
“Drink this.”
「これを飲んで」
She poured some milk into a cup; and, as she handed it to him, her lace opened, leaving the face uncovered.[顔を覆わない状態のまま]
彼女はカップにミルクを注ぎ、それを彼に手渡すと同時に、レースがめくれ （レースに覆われていない）顔が現われた。
“You!” he stammered. “It’s you!… It’s you who … it was you who were….”

He stared in[じっと見つめる] amazement at this woman whose features[顔の造作, 容貌] presented so striking[著しい] a resemblance[似ている] to[～を呈する] Gabriel’s,

whose delicate, regular face had the same pallor, whose mouth wore the same hard and forbidding expression.

No sister could have borne[生まれる] so great a likeness[似ていること, 類似] to her brother.

There was not a doubt possible: it was the identical person.

And, without believing for a moment that Gabriel had concealed himself in a woman’s clothes,

Lupin, on the contrary,[それどころか] received the distinct impression that it was a woman standing beside him

In order to follow their trade[職業, 商売] with greater ease,[いともたやすく] the Dugrival pair had accustomed her to disguise herself as a boy.
デュグリバル夫婦は、自分たちの仕事を円滑に進めるために、男の子の姿に変装することに慣れさせていたのだった。
