The inspector gave a start of delight.
警部は嬉しさに身震いした。
The marks of the five fingers and the print of the palm were distinctly[明白に] visible.[目に見える]

For, though I admit, friend of my youth, that you may look upon me as a superior intelligence, I won’t have you treat me as a wizard.”

Ganimard had quickly pocketed the piece of silk.
ガニマールはすぐに絹の切れはしをポケットに入れた。
Lupin nodded his head in approval:[承認, 認可]

“Quite right, old boy, it’s for you. I’m so glad you’re glad!
「もちろんだとも。それは、君のものだ。喜んでくれて嬉しいよ！
And, you see, there was no trap about all this … only the wish to oblige … a service between friends, between pals….
そして、分かるだろう。罠なんてなかっただろう…ただ好意を示したかったんだ…友だち同士のサービス、仲間間での助け合いをね…。
And also, I confess, a little curiosity….
それに、正直に言えばちょっと好奇心もあったのさ…。
Yes, I wanted to examine this other piece of silk, the one the police had….
そう、僕はこのもう片方の絹の断片を調べたかったんだよ。警察が持っているものをね…。
Don’t be afraid: I’ll give it back to you…. Just a second….”
怖がることはない、君に返すからね…。ただ少しだけ…」
Lupin, with a careless movement, played with the tassel at the end of this half of the scarf, while Ganimard listened to him in spite of himself:
ルパンは何気ない素振りで、残り半分のスカーフの先端についている房をもて遊んでいたが、ガニマールは知らず知らずのうちに耳を傾けていた。
“How ingenious these little bits of women’s work[（彫刻などの）製作品] are!
まったく、この小さな女性の代物というのはなんと巧妙にできているんだろうね。
Did you notice one detail[ささいなこと] in the maid’s evidence?
女中の証言でちょっとしたことに気がつかなかったかい？
Jenny Saphir was very handy with her needle[編み物針] and used to make all her own hats and frocks.
ジェニー・サフィールは針仕事がとても器用で、自分で帽子や仕事着を作っていたんだ。
It is obvious[当たり前なんだけど] that she made this scarf herself….
当然、このスカーフも自分で作った…
Besides, I noticed that from the first.
加えて、僕は最初からそのことに気づいていた。
I am naturally curious, as I have already told you, and I made a thorough examination of the piece of silk which you have just put in your pocket.
僕は元来好奇心が強くてね、すでに話したように、君が今ポケットに入れた絹の切れはしを念入りに調べたんだ。
Inside the tassel, I found a little sacred medal, which the poor girl had stitched into it to bring her luck.
その房の中に、あの不幸な娘が幸せになりたいがために縫い込んだ小さな聖母像のメダルを見つけたのさ。
Touching, isn’t it, Ganimard? A little medal of Our Lady of Good Succour.”
感動的な話だろ？ガニマール。マリア像の小さなメダルだぜ」
The inspector felt greatly puzzled and did not take his eyes off the other. And Lupin continued:
警部は大いに当惑し、相手から目を離さなかった。ルパンは続けた。
“Then I said to myself, ‘How interesting it would be to explore the other half of the scarf, the one which the police will find round the victim’s neck!’
そして「警察が見つけるだろう被害者の首に巻かれているスカーフの片方を調べ【る】れば、面白いだろうな！」と心の中で思ったのさ。
For this other half, which I hold in my hands at last, is finished off in the same way … so I shall be able to see if it has a hiding-place too and what’s inside it….
ほら、こうしてようやく僕が手にした、残りの半分も、同じように仕上げられているだろ…だから僕はそれが隠し場所になっているかどうか、そしてその中に何が入っているかに気づくことができたのさ…
But look, my friend, isn’t it cleverly made? And so simple!
でも見て見ろ、友よ、うまく出来ているじゃないか？それもすごく簡単に！
All you have to do[～するだけでいい] is to take a skein[もつれ] of red cord and braid it round a wooden cup, leaving a little recess, a little empty space in the middle,

very small, of course, but large enough to hold a medal of a saint … or anything….

A precious stone, for instance…. Such as a sapphire….”

At that moment he finished pushing back the silk cord and,

from the hollow of a cup he took between his thumb and forefinger a wonderful blue stone, perfect in respect of size and purity.

“Ha! What did I tell you,[だから言っただろ？] friend of my youth?”
「ほらね！言ったとおりだろ？友よ」
He raised his head.
ルパンは顔を上げた。
The inspector had turned livid and was staring wild-eyed, as though fascinated by the stone that sparkled before him.
警部は、目の前で輝く石に魅入られたように、青ざめ、目を見開いていた。
He at last realized the whole plot:[陰謀, 策略]
いま、ルパンの陰謀の全体像をはっきりと理解した。
“You dirty scoundrel!” he muttered, repeating the insults[侮辱] which he had used at the first interview.[会見, 面接] “You scum[浮きかす] of the earth!”
「このうす汚い悪党め!」彼は最初に会ったとき言ったのと同じ悪態を繰り返し呟いた。「このクズめ！」
The two men were standing one against the other.
2人の男は互いに向かい合って立っていた。
“Give me back that,” said the inspector.
「それを返せ」警部は言った。
Lupin held out the piece of silk.
ルパンは絹の切れはしを差し出した。
“And the sapphire,” said Ganimard, in a peremptory[有無を言わせぬ] tone.
「サファイアもだ」 ガニマールは断固とした口調で言った。
“Don’t be silly.”
「バカを言うなよ」
“Give it back, or….”
「返せ、さもなくば…」
“Or what, you idiot!” cried Lupin. “Look here, do you think I put you on to this soft thing for nothing?”
「さもなくば何だって言うんだ、バカめ！」ルパンは叫んだ。「いいか、このすべすべした物をタダで君に渡すと思うかい?」
“Give it back!”
「返せ！」
“You haven’t noticed what I’ve been about, that’s plain! What! For four weeks I’ve kept you on the move[転々と移動を続ける] like a deer; and you want to …!
「僕がやっていたことが分かってないようだな、簡単なことさ。この４週間というもの僕は鹿のように君を操り続けていたんだよ。そして、君はその通りにしたのさ…！
Come, Ganimard, old chap, pull yourself together!…
おいおい、ガニマールしっかりしろよ!…
Don’t you see that you’ve been playing the good dog for four weeks on end?[引き続いて]… Fetch it, Rover![犬の名前]…
君は自分がこの4週間ずっと、従順な犬を演じていたのがわからなかったのかい？…ほら、取ってくるんだ、ローバー!
There’s a nice blue pebble over there, which master can’t get at.
あそこに素敵な青い小石があって、ご主人様には手が届かないんだ。
Hunt it, Ganimard, fetch it … bring it to master….
持ってこい、ガニマール、取ってくるんだ…それをご主人さまに持ってくるんだ…。
Ah, he’s his master’s own good little dog!… Sit up! Beg![〈犬が〉ちんちんする]… Does’ms want a bit of sugar, then?…”
よしよし、いい子だ。[彼はご主人様の可愛い小さな犬！]…ちんちんをするんだ！… 砂糖をやるぞ。
Ganimard, containing the anger that seethed[沸騰する] within him, thought only of one thing, summoning[召集する] his detectives.
ガニマールは、自分の中に煮えくり返る怒りを抑えて、ただ一つのこと部下[刑事]たちを呼ぶことを考えた。
And, as the room in which he now was looked out on the courtyard, he tried gradually to work his way round to the communicating door.
今、ガニマールがいる部屋は中庭に面しているので、彼は少しずつ、（隣の部屋へと）通じるドアの方へ回ろうとした。
He would then run to the window and break one of the panes.
そうすれば窓に駆け寄って窓ガラスの一枚でも割ることができるだろう。
“All the same,” continued Lupin, “what a pack of[群れ] dunderheads[のろま, ばか] you and the rest must be!
「それにつけても」 とルパンは続けた。 「どいつもこいつも、なんて間抜けな連中なんだろう！
You’ve had the silk all this time and not one of you ever thought of feeling it,
これまでずっと絹のスカーフを持っていたと言うのに、誰もそれを触ってみようともせず、
not one of you ever asked himself the reason why the poor girl hung on to her scarf.
誰一人として、このかわいそうな女がスカーフにしがみついている理由を自問した者はいなかった。
Not one of you! You just acted at haphazard,[でたらめに] without reflecting, without foreseeing anything….”
誰一人もだ！君たちはただ、いきあたりばったりに行動しただけで、よく考える事もせず、何も予想もしなかったんだ…」
