An angry shiver passed through his frame[人間の体格,骨格] as he saw the impassive face of his keeper:

But he interrupted[遮る] himself.
しかし彼は言いかけて止めた。
The young man’s eyes wore the cruel expression which he knew so well.
この若者の目には、ルパンが良く知っている、あの残酷な表情が浮かんでいた。
What was the use of trying to move him?
彼の気持ち変えようしても無駄だろう[彼を動かすことに何の意味があるだろう？]
“Hang it all!” he snarled. “I’m not going to croak[死ぬ] here, like a dog! Oh, if I could only….”
「畜生め！」とルパンは唸る様に怒鳴った。「俺はここで犬みたいにくたばるつもりはない！ああ、もし…」
Stiffening[体をこわばらせる] all his muscles, he tried to burst[引き裂く] his bonds,[拘束, かせ] making a violent effort that drew a cry of pain from[引き出す] him; and he fell back upon his bed, exhausted.
全身の筋肉を固くして縛りを引きちぎろうとしたが、その激しい動きに苦痛の声が漏れ、疲れ果ててベッドに倒れ込んでしまった。
“Well, well,” he muttered, after a moment, “it’s as the widow said: my goose is cooked. Nothing to be done. De profundis[ラテン語=from the depths], Lupin.”
「いやはや」と、しばらくしてからルパンは呟いた。「未亡人が言ったように、僕も年貢の納め時だな。どうしようもない。どん底のルパンだな」
A quarter of an hour passed, half an hour….
１５分過ぎ、30分が過ぎた…。
Gabriel, moving closer to Lupin, saw that his eyes were shut and that his breath came evenly,[むらなく] like that of a man sleeping. But Lupin said:
ガブリエルはルパンに近づくと、目を閉じ眠っているように息が規則正しい（のを見た）。しかしルパンは言った。
“Don’t imagine that I’m asleep, youngster. No, people don’t sleep at a moment like this.
「僕が眠っているなんて思うなよ、坊や。こんな時に眠る人間なんていない。
Only I am consoling[慰める] myself. Needs must, eh?… And then I am thinking of what is to come after…. Exactly.
ただ気を鎮めているだけさ。そうでもしないとな？…そして（死んだ後）どうなるかを考えていたのさ…そうだとも。
I have a little theory[理論] of my own about that.
それについてはちょっとした持論があるんだ。
You wouldn’t think it, to look at me, but I believe in metempsychosis,[輪廻(りんね)] in the transmigration of souls.
そうは見えないかもしれない、僕は魂の再生、転生[輪廻]を信じているんだ。
It would take too long to explain, however…. I say, boy … suppose we shook hands before we part? You won’t?
説明するには時間がかかりすぎるがね…。どうだ、坊や…お別れする前に握手してみないか？しないって？
Then good-bye. Good health and a long life to you, Gabriel!…”
それじゃあ、さようならだ。元気で、よい人生をな、ガブリエル！」
He closed his eyelids and did not stir again before Mme[Madam]. Dugrival’s return.
ルパンはまぶたを閉じ、デュグリバル夫人が帰ってくるまで、再び体を動かすことはなかった。
The widow entered with a lively step, at a few minutes before twelve.
未亡人は１２時になる数分前に生き生きとした足取りで入ってきた。
She seemed greatly excited:
とても興奮しているようだった。
“I have the money,” she said to her nephew. “Run away. I’ll join you in the motor down below.”[ずっと下に]
「お金が出来たよ」と彼女は甥に言った。「逃げなさい。あたしもすぐに下の車に行く[一緒になる]からね」
“But….”
「でも…」
“I don’t want your help to finish him off. I can do that alone.
「こいつにとどめを刺すのにお前の助けはいらない。あたし一人で出来るよ。
Still, if you feel like seeing the sort of a face a rogue can pull….[pull a face ] Pass me the weapon.”
それとも、お前、この悪党が顔を歪めるところを見たいのかい…。あたしに銃[武器]を渡しな」
Gabriel handed her the revolver and the widow continued:
ガブリエルはリボルバー銃を彼女に手渡し、未亡人は続けた。
“Have you burnt our papers?”
「あたし達の書類は燃やしたね？」
“Yes.”
「はい」
“Then to work. And, as soon as he’s done for, be off.
「それならやって[仕事をして]しまおう。そして、こいつの用が済んだら、すぐズラかろう。
The shots may bring the neighbours.
銃声で近所の住人が出てくるかもしれない。
They must find both the flats empty.”
見つかる時にはどっちの部屋も空にしておかなきゃいけないからね」
She went up to the bed:
彼女はベッドに上がった。
“Are you ready, Lupin?”
「覚悟はいいいかい、ルパン？」
“Ready’s not the word: I’m burning with impatience.”[たまらなく求める]
「準備が出来ているなんてもんではないね。待ち遠しくてうずうずしているよ」
“Have you any request to make of me?”
「言い残すことはあるかい[あたしにして欲しい事はあるかい]？」
“None.”
「いいや」
“Then….”
「じゃあ…」
“One word, though.”
「では、一言」
“What is it?”
「何だい？」
“If I meet Dugrival in the next world, what message am I to give him from you?”
「あの世でデュグリバルに会ったら、なんと伝えればいいかな？」
She shrugged her shoulders and put the barrel of the revolver to Lupin’s temple.
彼女は肩をすくめ、リボルバーの銃身をルパンのこめかみにあてた。
“That’s it,” he said, “and be sure your hand doesn’t shake, my dear lady.
「結構」とルパンは言った。「手が震えないように気をつけてくださいよ、奥様。
It won’t hurt you, I swear. Are you ready? At the word of command, eh? One … two … three….”
あなたは痛くなんてないんですから、保証します。準備はいいですか？号令が必要かな？いち…に…さん…」
The widow pulled the trigger. A shot rang out.
未亡人は引き金を引いた。銃声が鳴り響いた。
“Is this death?” said Lupin. “That’s funny! I should have thought it was something much more different from life!”
「これが死と言うものですか？」とルパンは言った。「変だな！もっと生とは違うものだと思ってましたよ！」
There was a second shot. Gabriel snatched the weapon from his aunt’s hands and examined it:
二回目の銃声が鳴った。ガブリエルは伯母の手から銃[武器]をひったくって調べた。
“Ah,” he exclaimed, “the bullets have been removed!… There are only the percussion-caps left!…”
「あっ」と彼は叫んだ。「弾丸が取り除かれている！…銃の雷管しか残っていない！…」
His aunt and he stood motionless, for a moment, and confused:[混乱した]
伯母と彼はしばらく身じろぎもせず、途方に暮れ立ちつくした。
“Impossible!” she blurted out. “Who could have done it?… An inspector?… The examining-magistrate?…”
「ありえない！」と彼女は口走った。「誰がこんな事ができたろう？…警部？…予審判事だろうか？..」
She stopped and, in a low voice:
彼女は立ち止まり、低い声で言った。
“Hark…. I hear a noise….”
「お聞き…。物音がする…」
They listened and the widow went into the hall.
彼らは耳を傾け、未亡人は広間に入っていった。
She returned, furious, exasperated by her failure and by the scare which she had received:
彼女は自分の取り越し苦労[失敗]と受けた恐怖に怒りを感じ、激怒して戻ってきた。
“There’s nobody there…. It must have been the neighbours going out….
「誰もいなかったよ…。隣の人たちは出かけているに違いないわ…。
We have plenty of time…. Ah, Lupin, you were beginning to make merry!… The knife, Gabriel.”
時間はたっぷりある…。おや、ルパン、あんた、調子づいて来たね[陽気になり始めていた]!…ナイフを、ガブリエル」
“It’s in my room.”
「僕の部屋にあるよ」
“Go and fetch it.”
「取りに行【く】ってきな！」
Gabriel hurried away. The widow stamped with rage:
ガブリエルは急いで立ち去った。未亡人は怒りで足を踏み鳴らした。
“I’ve sworn to do it!… You’ve got to suffer, my fine fellow!…
「あたしはやる（殺す）と誓ったんだ！…あんたは苦しまなきゃならない、（ご立派な旦那さん！）…
I swore to Dugrival that I would do it and I have repeated my oath every morning and evening since….
あたしはデュグリバルにやると誓ったんだ。あの日以来、毎朝毎晩、誓いを繰り返してきたんだよ…。
I have taken it on my knees, yes, on my knees, before Heaven that listens to me!
ひざまずいて、そう、あたしの話を聞いてくれている神様の前にひざまずいてね！
It’s my duty and my right to revenge my dead husband!…
死んだ夫の復讐は、あたしの義務であり、権利なんだよ！…。
By the way, Lupin, you don’t look quite as merry as you did!…
ところで、ルパン、あんた顔色が悪いようだね…。
Lord, one would almost think you were afraid!… He’s afraid! He’s afraid! I can see it in his eyes!…
主よ、彼は恐れているとしか思えません！[神はあなたが恐れていると思っているだろう]…彼は怖いのですね！怖いのです！彼の目にそれ（恐怖）が見えます！…。
Come along, Gabriel, my boy!… Look at his eyes!…
こっちに来なさい、ガブリエル…あいつの目を見てごらん！…。
Look at his lips!… He’s trembling!… Give me the knife, so that I may dig it into[埋め込む] his heart while he’s shivering….
唇も見てごらん！…震えてる！…ナイフを貸すんだ、震えているあいつの心臓に突き刺すんだから…。
Oh, you coward!… Quick, quick, Gabriel, the knife!…”
