Next, he picks up the fragments of his eyeglass, the cord[紐] of which has been broken in the struggle.

He takes a pair of scissors—observe[観察する] the hacking[切り刻む] of the scissors—and cuts off the stained part of the scarf, leaving the other end, no doubt, in his victim’s clenched[固く結ぶ] hands.

He wraps everything in the newspaper, ties it with the cord and fastens this cut-glass inkstand to it, as a make-weight.

Then he makes himself scarce.

A little later, the parcel falls into the waterman’s barge. And there you are.

Oof, it’s hot work!… What do you say to the story?”

He looked at Ganimard to see what impression[効果, 影響] his speech had produced on the inspector.
ルパンはガニマールを見て、彼の話が警部にどういった印象を与えたかを確かめた。
Ganimard did not depart from[離れる：逸脱する] his attitude[姿勢, 身構え] of silence.
ガニマールは沈黙を崩さなかった。
Lupin began to laugh:

“As a matter of fact, you’re annoyed and surprised.

But you’re suspicious as well:

‘Why should that confounded[けしからぬ] Lupin hand the business over to me,’ say you,

「もし盗難事件があったのなら、それを誰にも言わず、自分で殺人犯を追いつめ、金品を盗むことをせずに？」ってね。もちろん、この疑問はかなり論理的だね。
But—there is a ‘but’—I have no time, you see.
でも 、『でも』があるんだ。僕には時間がないんだ、分かるだろ。
I am full up with work at the present moment:
今は仕事がぎっしりと詰まっているんだ。
a burglary in London, another at Lausanne, an exchange of children at Marseilles,

to say nothing of having to save a young girl who is at this moment shadowed[後をつけられる] by death.
今この瞬間も死神に憑りつかれている、少女を助けなければならないことは言うまでもない。
That’s always the way: it never rains but it pours.[降れば土砂降り] So I said to myself, ‘Suppose I handed the business over to my dear old Ganimard?
まあ、いつものことだがね。物事は重なって起こるものさ。そこで僕は心の中で思ったんだ『親愛なるガニマールにこの仕事を譲ったらどうだろう？
Now that it is half-solved for him, he is quite capable of succeeding.[跡を継ぐ]
半分解決されているようなものだし、ガニマールなら上手くやれるだろう。
And what a service I shall be doing him!
僕は、なんていい事をしてやっているんだろう！
How magnificently[雄大に] he will be able to distinguish himself[功労を立てる]!’ No sooner said than done.[言うやいなや実行する]
彼なら立派にうまくやってくれるだろう！」僕は思い立ったらすぐやる性分でね。
At eight o’clock in the morning, I sent the joker with the orange-peel to meet you.
朝の8時にオレンジの皮の奴を君に差し向けたんだ。
You swallowed the bait[餌]; and you were here by nine, all on edge[いらいらして] and eager for[熱望している] the fray.[神経などがすり減る]“
君は餌に食いついた。そして君は9時にはここやって来て、ここでいらいら、じりじりしているというわけだよ」
Lupin rose from his chair.
ルパンは椅子から立ちあがった。
He went over to the inspector and, with his eyes in Ganimard’s, said:
彼は警部のところへ行き、ガニマールの目を見ながら言った。
“That’s all. You now know the whole story.
「僕が言いたいのは、これだけさ。すべてが分かっただろ。
Presently, you will know the victim: some ballet-dancer, probably, some singer at a music-hall.
まもなく、その被害者のことが分かるだろうよ。バレエの踊り子か、たぶん歌劇場の歌手だ。
On the other hand, the chances[見込み, 成算] are that the criminal lives near the Pont-Neuf, most likely on the left bank.[土手, 堤防]
それから、おそらく犯人はポン・ヌフ橋の左岸近くに住んでいる可能性が最も高い。
Lastly, here are all the exhibits.
最後に、ここに証拠が全部ある。
I make you a present of them. Set to work.

I shall only keep this end of the scarf.

Bring it me in four weeks from now to the day, that is to say, on the 29th of December, at ten o’clock in the morning.

And don’t be afraid: this is all perfectly serious, friend of my youth; I swear it is. No humbug, honour bright.

You can go straight ahead.[まっすぐ進める]

Oh, by the way, when you arrest the fellow with the eyeglass, be a bit careful: he is left-handed! Good-bye, old dear, and good luck to you!”
ああ、ところで、その眼鏡の男を逮捕するときは、ちょっと気をつけて。そいつは左利きだ！じゃあな、友よ、健闘を祈る！」
Lupin spun round on his heel, went to the door, opened it and disappeared before Ganimard had even thought of taking a decision.[決断する]
ルパンは踵を返してくるりと向きを変え、ドアのところまで行き、ドアを開けて、ガニマールが考える間もなく姿を消した。
The inspector rushed after him, but at once found that the handle of the door, by some trick of mechanism which he did not know, refused to turn.
警部はあわててルパンの後を追ったが、すぐにドアの取っ手が、わけの分からない何らかのからくりによって、回せないことに気づいた。
It took him ten minutes to unscrew[ねじをゆるめて(…を)はずす] the lock and ten minutes more to unscrew the lock of the hall-door.
錠を開けるのに10分、広間の扉の錠を開けるのにさらに10分かかった。
By the time[～する時までには] that he had scrambled down the three flights of stairs, Ganimard had given up all hope of catching Arsène Lupin.
階段を3階分駆け下りたときには、ガニマールはアルセーヌ・ルパンを捕まえる望みを捨てていた。
