A moonbeam pierced[穴をあけた] through the clouds.
雲間から月明かりがさしこんだ。
Lupin distinctly saw the man take aim.
ルパンは、男が狙いを定めるのをはっきりと見た。
He tried to jump to the ground and turned his head.
ルパンは地面に飛び降りようとし、振り向いた。
But he felt something hit him in the chest, heard the sound of a report, uttered[口から出す] an angry oath[呪い,ののしり] and came crashing down from branch to branch,[枝から枝へと] like a corpse.
しかし、銃声を聞き何かが自分の胸に当たるのを感じた。ちくしょうと怒りの声を発し、屍のように次々と枝を折りながら崩れ落ちた。
Meanwhile, Doctor Guéroult, following Arsène Lupin’s instructions, had climbed the ledge[棚] of the fifth window and groped his way to the first floor.
一方、ゲルー医師は、アルセーヌ・ルパンの指示に従い、5番目の窓の縁
に登り、手探りで2階まで上がってきた。
On reaching Jeanne’s room, he tapped lightly, three times, at the door and, immediately on entering, pushed the bolt:
ジャンヌの部屋に着くと、彼はドアを軽く3回叩き、入ってすぐに閂をかけた。
“Lie down at once,” he whispered to the girl, who had not taken off her things.
「すぐに横になりなさい」と、まだ洋服姿のままでいる少女にささやいた。
“You must appear to have[～のようだ] gone to bed. Brrrr, it’s cold in here! Is the window open in your dressing-room?”
「寝たように見せかけるのです。ブルル…ここは寒いですな！化粧室の窓は開いてるのですかな？」
“Yes … would you like me to …?”
「はい…閉めてきましょうか…？」
“No, leave it as it is. They are coming.”
「いや、そのままで結構。彼らが来るからね」
“They are coming!” spluttered Jeanne, in affright.
「彼らが来る！」ジャンヌが酷く恐れて慌てた口調で言った。
“Yes, beyond a doubt.”[疑問の余地もなく]
「そう、間違いなく」
“But who? Do you suspect any one?”
「でも誰が？誰か疑っているのですか？」
“I don’t know who…. I expect that there is some one hidden in the house … or in the park.”
「誰かは分かりません…。家の中か…公園に誰か隠れていると思いますがね」
“Oh, I feel so frightened!”
「ああ、怖いわ！」
“Don’t be frightened. The sportsman who’s looking after you seems jolly clever and makes a point of playing a safe game.
「怖がることはありません。あなたの世話をしている若者は、とても賢いようで、安全に事を運ぶように心がけています。
I expect he’s on the look-out in the court.”
たぶん中庭で見張っているでしょう」
The doctor put out the night-light, went to the window and raised the blind.
ドクターは終夜灯を消すと、窓際に行き、ブラインドを上げた。
A narrow cornice, running along the first story, prevented[～しないように防ぐ] him from seeing more than a distant part of the courtyard; and he came back and sat down by the bed.
2階には雪庇
がびっしりと並んでいて、中庭の遠景を見ることはできない。ドクターは戻ってきてベッドのそばに座った。
Some very painful minutes passed, minutes that appeared to them interminably[果てしなく] long.
何分も何分も、ふたりにとって果てしなく長く感じる辛い時間が過ぎていった。
The clock in the village struck; but, taken up[吸収する,取り入れる] as they were with all the little noises of the night, they hardly noticed the sound.
村の時計が時を告げたが、夜のさまざまな雑音に紛れて、その音もほとんど気がつくことはなかった。
They listened, listened, with all their nerves on edge:
ふたりは神経を尖らせて、聞き耳をすました。
“Did you hear?” whispered the doctor.
「聞こえたかね？」とドクターがささやいた。
“Yes … yes,” said Jeanne, sitting up in bed.
「ええ…ええ」と、ジャンヌはベッドに腰を下ろした。
“Lie down … lie down,” he said, presently.[(古)ただちに, すぐに] “There’s some one coming.”
「横になって…横になるんです」すぐさまドクターは言った。「誰か来る」
There was a little tapping sound outside, against the cornice.
部屋の外で雪庇に当たったようなコツコツと小さな音がした。
Next came a series of indistinct[不明瞭な, ぼんやりした] noises, the nature of[その性質は] which they could not make out[～かを理解する] for certain.
次に、はっきりしない音が続いたが、それが何なのか確かな事は見当がつかなかった。
But they had a feeling that the window in the dressing-room was being opened wider, for they were buffeted by[～にさらされる] gusts[一陣の風] of cold air.
しかし、一陣の冷たい空気が吹き込み、化粧室の窓が大きく開けられたような気がした。
Suddenly, it became quite clear: there was some one next door.
突然、隣(の部屋）に誰かいることがはっきりした。
The doctor, whose hand was trembling a little, seized his revolver.
ドクターは少し震える手で、リボルバー銃を握った。
Nevertheless, he did not move, remembering the formal orders which he had received and fearing to act against them.
しかし、動きはしなかった。明確な命令を受けたことを思い出し、それに反する行動をとるのを恐れたからだ。
The room was in absolute darkness; and they were unable to see where the adversary was.
部屋は完全に暗闇で、敵がどこにいるのかわからない。
But they felt his presence.
しかし、ふたりは男の存在を感じていた。
They followed his invisible movements, the sound of his footsteps deadened by the carpet;
その足音は絨毯に消されていたが、ふたりは男の見えない動きを追い、
and they did not doubt but that he had already crossed the threshold of the room.
男がすでに部屋の敷居を越えていることを疑わなかった。
And the adversary stopped.
そして、敵が止まった。
Of that they were certain.
ふたりは確信した。
He was standing six steps away from the bed, motionless, undecided perhaps, seeking to pierce the darkness with his keen eyes.
男はベッドから六歩ほど離れたところに立って静止し、おそらく決めかねているのだろう。鋭い眼光で闇を貫こうとしているようだった。
Jeanne’s hand, icy-cold and clammy,[冷たくてべとべとする] trembled in the doctor’s grasp.
ドクターに掴まれたジャンヌの手は、氷のように冷たく、じっとりして震えていた。
With his other hand, the doctor clutched his revolver, with his finger on the trigger.
ドクターはもう片方の手でリボルバー銃を握りしめ、引き金に指をかけていた。
In spite of his pledged[固い約束] word, he did not hesitate.
誓った言葉とは裏腹に、彼は躊躇することはなかった。
If the adversary touched the end of the bed, the shot would be fired at a venture.
敵がベッドの端に触れたら、思い切って発砲するつもりだった。
The adversary took another step and then stopped again.
敵はもう一歩踏み出し、そしてまた立ち止まった。
And there was something awful about that silence, that impassive[無表情の,無感動の] silence, that darkness in which those human beings were peering at[凝らして見る] one another, wildly.
その沈黙には何か恐ろしいものがあった。その無表情な沈黙、その闇の中で激しくお互いが見つめ合っていた。
Who was it looming[〈危険・心配などが〉大きく迫る] in the murky[(黒い雲の層がおおって)暗くて陰気な] darkness? Who was the man?
真っ暗な闇の中で迫ってくるのは誰なのか？その男は誰なのか？
What horrible enmity[敵意] was it that turned his hand against the girl and what abominable aim was he pursuing?
どんな恐ろしい敵意が彼の手を少女に向かわせどんな忌まわしい目的を遂行【する】しようとしているのだろう？
Terrified though they were, Jeanne and the doctor thought only of that one thing: to see, to learn the truth, to gaze upon[熟視する] the adversary’s face.
恐怖に怯えながらも、ジャンヌとドクターはただ一心に、見たい、真実を知りたい、敵の顔を見すえたいと考えていた。
He took one more step and did not move again.
男はまた一歩踏み出すと、それきり動かなくなった。
It seemed to them that his figure stood out, darker, against the dark space and that his arm rose slowly, slowly….
その姿は、暗い空間に、より濃く、際立って見えた。そして、男の腕がゆっくりと、ゆっくりと上がっていった…。
A minute passed and then another minute….
1分経ち、また1分経ち…。
And, suddenly, beyond the man, on the right a sharp click….
そして、突然、男の向こうの右側で鋭い音がした…。
A bright light flashed, was flung upon the man, lit him full in the face, remorselessly.[無残にも]
明るい光がピカッと光り、男に浴びせられ、容赦なく顔いっぱいに照らされた。
Jeanne gave a cry of affright.
ジャンヌは恐怖の叫びをあげた。
She had seen—standing over her, with a dagger in his hand—she had seen … her father!
彼女は見たのだ…短剣を手に自分の上にのしかかるように立っている…見たのだ……自分の父親を！
Almost at the same time, though the light was already turned off, there came a report: the doctor had fired.
それとほぼ同時に、すでに明かりは消えていたが、銃声が響いた。ドクターが発砲したのだ。
“Dash it all, don’t shoot!” roared Lupin.
「何てことを！撃つな！」ルパンが怒鳴った。
He threw his arms round the doctor, who choked out:
ルパンは両腕をドクターに回した。ドクターは息を詰まらせた。
“Didn’t you see?… Didn’t you see?… Listen!… He’s escaping!…”
「見ていなかったかい？…見えなかったのか？ ほら！…奴が逃げていくぞ！…」
“Let him escape:”
「逃がしてあげましょう。それが一番いい」
