He pressed the spring of[本源，根源] his electric lantern again,

ran to the dressing-room, made certain that the man had disappeared and, returning quietly to the table, lit the lamp.

Jeanne lay on her bed, pallid, in a dead faint.
ジャンヌは青ざめ、気絶してベッドに横たわっていた。
The doctor, huddled in his chair, emitted[発する, 吐く] inarticulate[不明瞭な] sounds.
ドクターは椅子で身を縮め、言葉にならないつぶやきを漏らした。
“Come,” said Lupin, laughing, “pull yourself together.
「さあ、お気をしっかりと」 とルパンは笑いながら言った。
There is nothing to excite ourselves about: it’s all over.”
落ちついてください。[興奮することは何もありません] もう終わりましたからね」
“Her father!… Her father!” moaned the old doctor.
「父親… 父親だったとは！」と老医はうめいた。
“If you please, doctor, Mlle.[mademoiselle] Darcieux is ill. Look after her.”
「先生、もしよろしければ、ダルシュー嬢がご病気です。彼女の面倒を見【る】てください」
Without more words, Lupin went back to the dressing-room and stepped out on the window-ledge.
それ以上何も言わずにルパンは化粧室に戻り、窓敷居に出て見た。
A ladder stood against the ledge.[(壁・窓から突き出た)棚] He ran down it.
はしごが蛇腹
に立てかけてあった。ルパンはそこに駆け下りていった。
Skirting the wall of the house, twenty steps farther, he tripped over the rungs of a rope-ladder,
家の壁づたいに20歩ほど進んだところで、縄ばしごの横木につまづいた。
which he climbed and found himself in M. Darcieux’s bedroom.
はしごをのぼってみると、ダルシュー氏の寝室だった。
The room was empty.
部屋は空っぽだった。
“Just so,” he said. “My gentleman did not like the position and has cleared out.[中身を空にする]
「そうだろうな」 とルパンは言った。「かの紳士はこの状況が気に入らなかったと見える。ここを立ち去ったようだ。
Here’s wishing him a good journey…. And, of course, the door is bolted?…
良い旅をな…。もちろん、扉のかんぬきは閉めているだろうな？…。
Exactly!… That is how our sick man, tricking his worthy medical attendant,
やっぱりな！…こうやって、この病人はあの立派な主治医をだまして、
used to get up at night in full security, fasten[しっかり留める] his rope-ladder to the balcony and prepare his little games.
夜には万全のセキュリティで起き上がり、縄ばしごをバルコニーに固定し、ちょっとした悪だくみを準備していたんだ。
He’s no fool, is friend Darcieux!”
バカではないな、このダルシューという男は！」
He drew the bolts and returned to Jeanne’s room.
ルパンはかんぬきをはずしてジャンヌの部屋に戻った。
The doctor, who was just coming out of the doorway, drew him to the little dining-room:
ちょうど戸口から出てきたドクターが、ルパンを小さな食堂に引っ張っていき、
“She’s asleep, don’t let us disturb her. She has had a bad shock and will take some time to recover.”
「寝てるようじゃから、邪魔をしないようにしましょう。ひどいショックを受けて、回復には時間がかかるだろう」 と言った。
Lupin poured himself out a glass of water and drank it down.
ルパンは自分でコップ一杯の水を注ぎ、それを飲み干した。
Then he took a chair and, calmly:
それから椅子に腰かけると、落ち着き払ってこう言った。
“Pooh! She’ll be all right by to-morrow.”
「なあに！明日にはよくなりますよ」
“What do you say?”
「何だって？」
“I say that she’ll be all right by to-morrow.”
「明日には大丈夫になっていると言ったんです」
“Why?”
「なぜだね？」
“In the first place, because it did not strike me that Mlle. Darcieux felt any very great affection for her father.”
「まず第一に、ダルシュー嬢が父親にさしたる愛情を抱いているとは思えなかったからです」
“Never mind! Think of it: a father who tries to kill his daughter!
「そんなことではなく！ 考えてみてください、父親が娘を殺そうとしたのですぞ！
A father who, for months on end,[何カ月も続けて] repeats his monstrous attempt four, five, six times over again!…
何ヶ月もの間、自分の父親が恐るべき企てを4回、5回、6回繰り返したんじゃ！…。
Well, isn’t that enough to blight[～をくじく，損なう] a less sensitive soul than Jeanne’s for good and all?[永久に] What a hateful memory!”
まあ、それだけで、ジャンヌほど繊細でない精神の持ち主であっても、死ぬまで苦しめるのに十分ではないだろうか？なんて嫌な思い出だろう」
“She will forget.”
「彼女は忘れてしまうでしょうよ」
“One does not forget such a thing as that.”
「こんな事を忘れられる人間なんていないよ」
“She will forget, doctor, and for a very simple reason….”
「彼女はきっと忘れてしまいますよ、先生。それにはとても単純な理由があるんです…」
“Explain yourself!”
「説明してくれたまえ！」
“She is not M. Darcieux’s daughter!”
「彼女はダルシュー氏の娘じゃないんです！」
“Eh?”
「ええ？」
“I repeat, she is not that villain‘s daughter.”
「繰り返しますが、彼女はあの悪党の娘ではありません」
“What do you mean? M. Darcieux….”
「どういう意味だね？ダルシュー氏の…」
“M. Darcieux is only her step-father. She had just been born when her father, her real father, died.
「ダルシュー氏は彼女の義父に過ぎないのです。彼女が生まれたばかりのとき、実の父親は亡くなっています。
Jeanne’s mother then married a cousin of her husband’s, a man bearing the same name,
ジャンヌの母親は、夫のいとこで同じ名前の男性と結婚し、
and she died within a year of her second wedding.
2度目の結婚から1年以内に亡くなったんです。
She left Jeanne in M. Darcieux’s charge.[引き受けさせる]

He first took her abroad and then bought this country-house;

The doctor sat confounded. He asked:

I searched the registers, I interviewed two solicitors, I have seen all the documents.

There is no doubt possible.”

“But that does not explain the crime, or rather the series of crimes.”
「しかし、それだけで今夜の犯行、あるいは一連の犯罪の説明がつくわけではありませんぞ」
“Yes, it does,” declared Lupin.
「いいえ、つくんです」 とルパンは断言した。
“And, from the start, from the first hour when I meddled in[～に干渉する] this business,
「最初から、僕がこの問題に口を挟んだ始めの1時間から、
some words which Mlle. Darcieux used made me suspect that direction which my investigations must take.

‘I was not quite five years old when my mother died,’ she said.

I at once saw that this was an important detail.

What was the financial position of Mlle. Darcieux, who was her mother’s natural heiress?
母親の血縁相続人であるダルシュー嬢の財産[財政状態]はどうなっていたでしょうか？
Of course, I did not think of the father for a second.
もちろん、僕は一瞬たりとも父親のこと疑っていたわけではありません。
To begin with, one can’t imagine a thing like that; and then the farce[茶番狂言] which M. Darcieux was playing … helpless, bedridden, ill….”
そもそも、誰にもそのようなことは想像できないですよ。ダルシュー氏は歩くこともできない、寝たきりの病人だという茶番を演じていたのですからね…」
“Really ill,” interrupted the doctor.
「本当に病気だったのだよ」 ドクターは言葉をさえぎった。
