THE NINTH CHAPTER
THE PURPLE BIRD-OF-PARADISE
紫の極楽鳥ミランダがついにドリトル先生の家へ到着する章です。しかし長旅で疲れきったミランダは、庭にいたスズメのチープサイドに侮辱され、ブラジルへ帰ろうとするほど傷ついてしまいます。知らせ・到着・美しい鳥の描写・礼儀知らずな言動に関する重要表現を多めに色分けしています。
POLYNESIA was waiting for us in the front porch.
ポリネシアは玄関ポーチで私たちを待っていた。
She looked full of some important news.
彼女は何か重要な知らせでいっぱいという様子だった。
“Doctor,” said she, “the Purple Bird-of-Paradise has arrived!”
「先生」と彼女は言った。「紫の極楽鳥が到着しました！」
“At last!” said the Doctor.
「ついに！」と先生は言った。
“I had begun to fear some accident had befallen her.”
「私は、彼女に何か事故が起きたのではないかと心配し始めていたんだ」
“And how is Miranda?”
「それで、ミランダの様子はどうだい？」
From the excited way in which the Doctor fumbled his key into the lock, I guessed that we were not going to get our tea right away, even now.
先生が興奮した様子で鍵を鍵穴に差し込もうとしてもたついているのを見て、今になってもすぐにはお茶にありつけそうにないと私は思った。
“Oh, she seemed all right when she arrived,” said Polynesia—“tired from her long journey of course but otherwise all right.”
「ええ、到着したときは大丈夫そうでした」とポリネシアは言った。「もちろん長旅で疲れてはいましたが、それ以外は大丈夫でした」
“But what do you think?”
「でも、何があったと思います？」
“That mischief-making sparrow, Cheapside, insulted her as soon as she came into the garden.”
「あの騒ぎを起こすスズメ、チープサイドが、彼女が庭に入ってきたとたん侮辱したのです」
“When I arrived on the scene she was in tears and was all for turning round and going straight back to Brazil to-night.”
「私が現場に着いたとき、彼女は涙を流していて、今夜すぐに引き返してブラジルへ帰ると言い張っていました」
“I had the hardest work persuading her to wait till you came.”
「先生が戻るまで待つように彼女を説得するのに、本当に苦労しました」
“She’s in the study.”

“I shut Cheapside in one of your book-cases and told him I’d tell you exactly what had happened the moment you got home.”
「私はチープサイドを先生の本棚の一つに閉じ込め、先生が家に戻った瞬間に、何が起きたのか正確に伝えると言っておきました」
The Doctor frowned, then walked silently and quickly to the study.
先生は眉をひそめ、それから黙って足早に書斎へ向かった。
Here we found the candles lit; for the daylight was nearly gone.
そこでは、ろうそくに火がともされていた。もう日がほとんど暮れていたからだ。
Dab-Dab was standing on the floor mounting guard over one of the glass-fronted book-cases in which Cheapside had been imprisoned.
ダブダブは床に立ち、チープサイドが閉じ込められているガラス扉付きの本棚の一つを見張っていた。
The noisy little sparrow was still fluttering angrily behind the glass when we came in.
私たちが入ってきたとき、その騒がしい小さなスズメは、まだガラスの向こうで怒って羽ばたいていた。
In the centre of the big table, perched on the ink-stand, stood the most beautiful bird I have ever seen.
大きな机の中央、インク台の上に止まっていたのは、私がこれまで見た中で最も美しい鳥だった。
She had a deep violet-colored breast, scarlet wings and a long, long sweeping tail of gold.
彼女は深いすみれ色の胸、緋色の翼、そして長く長く優雅に流れる金色の尾を持っていた。
She was unimaginably beautiful but looked dreadfully tired.
彼女は想像を超えるほど美しかったが、ひどく疲れているように見えた。
Already she had her head under her wing.

And she swayed gently from side to side on top of the ink-stand like a bird that has flown long and far.

“Sh!” said Dab-Dab. “Miranda is asleep.”
「しっ！」とダブダブが言った。「ミランダは眠っています」
“I’ve got this little imp Cheapside in here.”
「この小悪魔チープサイドは、ここに入れてあります」
“Listen, Doctor: for Heaven’s sake send that sparrow away before he does any more mischief.”
「聞いてください、先生。お願いですから、あのスズメがこれ以上悪さをする前に追い払ってください」
“He’s nothing but a vulgar little nuisance.”
「あれはただの下品な小さな迷惑者です」
“We’ve had a perfectly awful time trying to get Miranda to stay.”
「ミランダをここにとどまらせるのに、本当にひどい苦労をしました」
“Shall I serve your tea in here, or will you come into the kitchen when you’re ready?”
「お茶はこちらにお持ちしましょうか。それとも準備ができたら台所へいらっしゃいますか？」
“We’ll come into the kitchen, Dab-Dab,” said the Doctor.
「台所へ行くよ、ダブダブ」と先生は言った。
“Let Cheapside out before you go, please.”
「行く前にチープサイドを出してやってくれ」
Dab-Dab opened the bookcase-door and Cheapside strutted out trying hard not to look guilty.
ダブダブが本棚の扉を開けると、チープサイドは後ろめたそうに見えないよう懸命に装いながら、気取って出てきた。
“Cheapside,” said the Doctor sternly, “what did you say to Miranda when she arrived?”
「チープサイド」と先生は厳しく言った。「ミランダが到着したとき、君は彼女に何と言ったんだい？」
“I didn’t say nothing, Doc, straight I didn’t.”
「何も言ってませんよ、先生。本当に言ってません」
“That is, nothing much.”
「つまり、大したことは何も」
“I was picking up crumbs off the gravel path when she comes swanking into the garden.”
「あいつが庭へ気取って入ってきたとき、俺は砂利道でパンくずを拾っていただけです」
“Turning up her nose in all directions, as though she owned the earth—just because she’s got a lot of colored plumage.”
「あちこちで鼻を高くして、まるで地球を所有しているみたいにしていたんですよ。色つきの羽毛をたくさん持っているというだけで」
“A London sparrow’s as good as her any day.”
「ロンドンのスズメだって、いつだってあいつに負けないくらい立派です」
“I don’t hold by these gawdy bedizened foreigners nohow.”
「俺は、ああいうけばけばしく飾り立てた外国者なんか、まったく好みませんね」
“Why don’t they stay in their own country?”
「どうして自分の国にいないんですかね？」
“But what did you say to her that got her so offended?”
「だが、彼女がそんなに気分を害するようなことを、君は何と言ったんだい？」
“All I said was, ‘You don’t belong in an English garden; you ought to be in a milliner’s window.’”
「俺が言ったのは、『あんたは英国の庭にはふさわしくない。帽子屋のショーウィンドウにいるべきだ』というだけです」
“That’s all.”
「それだけです」
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself, Cheapside.”
「君は自分を恥じるべきだよ、チープサイド」
“Don’t you realize that this bird has come thousands of miles to see me?”
「この鳥が私に会うために何千マイルも旅してきたことがわからないのかい？」
“Only to be insulted by your impertinent tongue as soon as she reaches my garden?”
「それなのに、私の庭に着くなり、君の生意気な舌で侮辱されるためだったというのかい？」
“What do you mean by it?”
「いったいどういうつもりなんだ？」
“If she had gone away again before I got back to-night I would never have forgiven you.”
「今夜私が戻る前に彼女が帰ってしまっていたら、私は決して君を許さなかっただろう」
“Leave the room.”
「部屋を出なさい」
Sheepishly, but still trying to look as though he didn’t care, Cheapside hopped out into the passage and Dab-Dab closed the door.
チープサイドはしょんぼりしながらも、気にしていないふりをしようとして、通路へぴょんぴょん出ていき、ダブダブが扉を閉めた。
The Doctor went up to the beautiful bird on the ink-stand and gently stroked its back.
先生はインク台の上にいる美しい鳥のところへ行き、その背中をやさしくなでた。
Instantly its head popped out from under its wing.
たちまち、その頭が翼の下からひょいと飛び出した。
