Enter Horatio, Marcellus and Barnardo.

ホレイショー、マーセラス、バーナードー登場。

HORATIO. Hail to your lordship!

ホレイショー「殿下、ご機嫌うるわしゅうございます！」

HAMLET. I am glad to see you well: Horatio, or I do forget myself.

ハムレット「元気な君に会えてうれしい。ホレイショーだな、もし違っていたら私の思い違いだが」

HORATIO. The same, my lord, and your poor servant ever.

ホレイショー「その通りでございます、殿下。いつまでもあなたのつたない僕でございます」

HAMLET. Sir, my good friend; I’ll change that name with you: and what make you from Wittenberg, Horatio?—Marcellus?

ハムレット「いや、君は私のよき友だ。その呼び名は私と取り替えよう。ところでホレイショー、ウィッテンベルクから何をしに来たのだ。マーセラスか？」

MARCELLUS. My good lord.

マーセラス「はい、殿下」

HAMLET. I am very glad to see you.—Good even, sir.—But what, in faith, make you from Wittenberg?

ハムレット「会えて本当にうれしい。こんばんは。だが本当に、ウィッテンベルクから何をしに来たのだ？」

HORATIO. A truant disposition, good my lord.

ホレイショー「怠け癖でございます、殿下」

HAMLET. I would not hear your enemy say so; nor shall you do my ear that violence, to make it truster of your own report against yourself. I know you are no truant.

ハムレット「君の敵がそう言うのも聞きたくない。まして君自身が自分を悪く言って、私の耳にそんな乱暴をすることは許さない。君が怠け者でないことは分かっている」

But what is your affair in Elsinore? We’ll teach you to drink deep ere you depart.

だがエルシノアでの用件は何だ。帰る前に、たっぷり飲むことを教えてやろう。

HORATIO. My lord, I came to see your father’s funeral.

ホレイショー「殿下、お父上の葬儀を見届けるために参りました」

HAMLET. I prithee do not mock me, fellow-student. I think it was to see my mother’s wedding.

ハムレット「頼む、からかわないでくれ、学友よ。母の結婚式を見に来たのだろう」

HORATIO. Indeed, my lord, it follow’d hard upon.

ホレイショー「確かに殿下、それは葬儀のすぐ後に続きました」

HAMLET. Thrift, thrift, Horatio! The funeral bak’d meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.

ハムレット「倹約、倹約だ、ホレイショー。葬儀の焼き肉が冷えたまま、婚礼の食卓を飾ったのだ」

Would I had met my dearest foe in heaven or ever I had seen that day, Horatio. My father,—methinks I see my father.

あの日を見るくらいなら、天国で最も憎い敵に会った方がましだった。ホレイショー。父上が――父上が見える気がする。

HORATIO. Where, my lord?

ホレイショー「どちらに、殿下？」

HAMLET. In my mind’s eye, Horatio.

ハムレット「心の目にだ、ホレイショー」

HORATIO. I saw him once; he was a goodly king.

ホレイショー「私は一度お目にかかりました。立派な王でございました」

HAMLET. He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.

ハムレット「あの方は、総じて言えば真の人間だった。あのような人を私は二度と見ることはないだろう」

HORATIO. My lord, I think I saw him yesternight.

ホレイショー「殿下、私は昨夜、その方を見たと思います」

HAMLET. Saw? Who?

ハムレット「見た？ 誰をだ？」

HORATIO. My lord, the King your father.

ホレイショー「殿下、あなたのお父上である王をです」

HAMLET. The King my father!

ハムレット「父である王を！」

HORATIO. Season your admiration for a while with an attent ear, till I may deliver upon the witness of these gentlemen this marvel to you.

ホレイショー「どうか驚きをしばらく抑え、注意深くお聞きください。この方々の証言に基づいて、この不思議な出来事をお伝えします」

HAMLET. For God’s love let me hear.

ハムレット「神にかけて、聞かせてくれ」

HORATIO. Two nights together had these gentlemen, Marcellus and Barnardo, on their watch in the dead waste and middle of the night, been thus encounter’d.

ホレイショー「二晩続けて、マーセラスとバーナードーの二人は、真夜中の深い静寂の中で見張りをしていたとき、このようなものに出くわしました」

A figure like your father, armed at point exactly, cap-à-pie, appears before them, and with solemn march goes slow and stately by them.

thrice he walk’d by their oppress’d and fear-surprised eyes, within his truncheon’s length; whilst they, distill’d almost to jelly with the act of fear, stand dumb, and speak not to him.

HORATIO. My lord, I did; but answer made it none: yet once methought it lifted up it head, and did address itself to motion, like as it would speak.

ホレイショー「はい、殿下、話しかけました。しかし答えはありませんでした。ただ一度、頭を上げ、何か動こうとし、話そうとしているように見えました」

But even then the morning cock crew loud, and at the sound it shrunk in haste away, and vanish’d from our sight.

しかしその時、朝の鶏が高く鳴き、その声を聞くと、亡霊は急いで退き、私たちの視界から消えてしまいました。

HAMLET. ’Tis very strange.

ハムレット「実に奇妙だ」

HORATIO. As I do live, my honour’d lord, ’tis true; and we did think it writ down in our duty to let you know of it.

ホレイショー「私が生きていることにかけて、殿下、それは真実です。そして私たちは、このことを殿下にお知らせするのが義務だと考えました」

HAMLET. Indeed, indeed, sirs, but this troubles me. Hold you the watch tonight?

MARCELLUS and BARNARDO. We do, my lord.

マーセラスとバーナードー「いたします、殿下」

HAMLET. Arm’d, say you?

ハムレット「武装していたと言ったな？」

BOTH. Arm’d, my lord.

二人「武装していました、殿下」

HAMLET. From top to toe?

ハムレット「頭からつま先までか？」

BOTH. My lord, from head to foot.

二人「はい、殿下、頭から足まででございます」

HAMLET. Then saw you not his face?

ハムレット「では顔は見えなかったのか？」

HORATIO. O yes, my lord, he wore his beaver up.

ホレイショー「いえ、見えました、殿下。兜の面頬を上げていました」

HAMLET. What, look’d he frowningly?

ハムレット「どうだ、険しい顔をしていたか？」

HORATIO. A countenance more in sorrow than in anger.

ホレイショー「怒りというより、悲しみを帯びた表情でございました」

HAMLET. Pale, or red?

ハムレット「青ざめていたか、それとも赤かったか？」

HORATIO. Nay, very pale.

ホレイショー「いえ、たいへん青白くございました」

HAMLET. And fix’d his eyes upon you?

ハムレット「そして目をじっと君たちに向けていたのか？」

HORATIO. Most constantly.

ホレイショー「はい、じっと見つめておりました」

HAMLET. I would I had been there.

ハムレット「私もそこにいたかった」

HORATIO. It would have much amaz’d you.

ホレイショー「きっと大いに驚かれたことでしょう」

HAMLET. Very like, very like. Stay’d it long?

ハムレット「そうだろう、そうだろう。長く留まったのか？」

HORATIO. While one with moderate haste might tell a hundred.

ホレイショー「ほどよい速さで百まで数えるくらいの間でございました」

MARCELLUS and BARNARDO. Longer, longer.

マーセラスとバーナードー「もっと長く、もっと長くでございます」

HORATIO. Not when I saw’t.

ホレイショー「私が見た時は、そうではありませんでした」

HAMLET. His beard was grizzled, no?

ハムレット「父の髭は白髪交じりだったか？」

HORATIO. It was, as I have seen it in his life, a sable silver’d.

ホレイショー「はい。生前に見た通り、黒に銀が混じった髭でございました」

HAMLET. I will watch tonight; Perchance ’twill walk again.

ハムレット「今夜、私も見張ろう。ひょっとすると、また現れるかもしれない」

HORATIO. I warrant you it will.

ホレイショー「きっと現れます」

HAMLET. If it assume my noble father’s person, I’ll speak to it, though hell itself should gape and bid me hold my peace.

ハムレット「もしそれが高貴な父上の姿を取るなら、地獄そのものが口を開けて私に黙れと命じようとも、私はそれに話しかける」

I pray you all, if you have hitherto conceal’d this sight, let it be tenable in your silence still.

皆に頼む。これまでこの目撃を隠してきたのなら、今後も沈黙のうちに守ってくれ。

And whatsoever else shall hap tonight, Give it an understanding, but no tongue.

そして今夜この先何が起ころうとも、それを理解はしても、口には出さないでくれ。

I will requite your loves. So, fare ye well. Upon the platform ’twixt eleven and twelve, I’ll visit you.

君たちの友情には必ず報いよう。ではさらば。十一時と十二時の間に、城壁の上へ行く。

ALL. Our duty to your honour.

一同「殿下に忠誠を」

HAMLET. Your loves, as mine to you: farewell.

ハムレット「忠誠ではなく、友情を。私も君たちに同じ友情を返す。さらば」

Exeunt Horatio, Marcellus and Barnardo.

ホレイショー、マーセラス、バーナードー退場。

HAMLET. My father’s spirit in arms! All is not well; I doubt some foul play: would the night were come!

ハムレット「武装した父上の霊！ すべてがうまくいっていない。何か邪悪なたくらみがあるに違いない。早く夜が来ればよいのに！」

Till then sit still, my soul: foul deeds will rise, though all the earth o’erwhelm them, to men’s eyes.

それまでは静まれ、わが魂よ。悪事は、たとえ全世界がそれを覆い隠そうとも、必ず人の目の前に現れるのだ。

Exit.

退場。
