２. ブラック・ドッグが姿をあらわし、そして消えた。
Come, Bill, you know me; you know an old shipmate, Bill, surely,[まさか] said the stranger.
こっちにきなよ、ビル。俺が分かるだろ。昔の船乗り仲間じゃないか、よもや（忘れたとは言わせないぞ）、ビル。と見知らぬ男はいった。
The captain made a sort of gasp. “Black Dog!” said he. “And who else?” returned the other, getting more at his ease.[緊張の緩和]

Black Dog as ever was, come for[～の目的で来た] to see his old shipmate Billy, at the Admiral Benbow inn.
昔と変わらないブラック・ドッグが、ベンボウ提督亭まで古い船乗り仲間のビリーに会いにやって来たのさ。
Ah, Bill, Bill, we have seen a sight of times, us two, since I lost them two talons, holding up[掲げる] his mutilated hand.

Now, look here, said the captain; “you’ve run me down; here I am; well, then, speak up; what is it?”
おい、いいか、キャプテンはいった。「おまえは俺を追いつめたんだ。俺はここにいる。さぁ、言いな。どうしようというんだ？」
“That’s you, Bill,” returned Black Dog, “you’re in the right of it,[おまえの言う通りだ] Billy.
「それでこそおまえというもんだ、ビル」ブラック・ドッグは答えた。「そのとおりだよ、ビリー。
I’ll have a glass of rum from this dear child here, as I’ve took such a liking to;
このかわいいぼうずからラムを一杯もらおうか。俺はこいつがすっかり気にいってしまったんでな。
and we’ll sit down, if you please, and talk square,[五分と五分で, 正々堂々と] like old shipmates.”
それから、座って、お前さえよかったら、ざっくばらんに話そうじゃないか。昔の船乗り仲間のときのようにな。
When I returned with the rum, they were already seated on either side of the captain’s breakfast-table–
僕がラムを持ってもどってみると、やつらはすでにキャプテンの朝食用テーブルの両側に（向かい合って）座っていた。
BlackDog next to the door and sitting sideways so as to[～するために] have one eye on his old shipmate and one, as I thought, on his retreat.
ブラック・ドッグはドアの隣で横向きに座っていて、片方の目で昔の船乗り仲間を見るようにし、もう片方の目で、僕が思うには、退路を見ていたんだろう。
He bade me go and leave the door wide open.

“None of your keyholes for me, sonny,” he said; and I left them together and retired into the bar.

For a long time, though I certainly did my best to listen, I could hear nothing but a low gattling;

but at last the voices began to grow higher, and I could pick up[拾い上げる] a word or two, mostly oaths, from the captain.

No, no, no, no; and an end of it!” he cried once.

And again, “If it comes to swinging, swing all, say I.”
もう一度、「（おれが）縛り首になるって言うなら、お前らみんな縛り首だと言っているんだ」
Then all of a sudden there was a tremendous explosion of oaths and other noises–

the chair and table went over in a lump,[ひとまとめに] a clash of steel followed, and then a cry of pain,

and the next instant I saw Black Dog in full flight, and the captain hotly pursuing,

Just at the door the captain aimed at the fugitive[逃亡者] one last tremendous cut,

which would certainly have split[割る, 縦に裂く] him to the chine had it not been intercepted[遮る, 迎撃する] by our big signboard of Admiral Benbow.

Once out upon the road, Black Dog, in spite of his wound,
いったん路上に出ると、ブラック・ドッグはけがをしていたにもかかわらず、
showed a wonderful clean pair of heels[すたこら逃げる] and disappeared over the edge of the hill in half a minute.
一目散にすたこら逃げ出し、三十秒後には丘のふちにへと姿を消した。
The captain, for his part, stood staring at the signboard like a bewildered[当惑させる, うろたえさせる] man.
キャプテンはというと、看板を睨みながら煙に巻かれたようにきょとんと立ちつくしていた。
Then he passed his hand over his eyes several times and at last turned back into the house.
それから何度も目を手でこすり、ようやく家になかに戻っていった。
“Jim,” says he, “rum”; and as he spoke, he reeled a little, and caught himself with one hand against the wall.
「ジム」と、キャプテンはいった。「ラムだ」やつはそういいながら、少しよろめき壁に片手をついて体をささえた。
Are you hurt? cried I. “Rum,” he repeated.
けがはない？ と、僕は大声できいた。「ラムだ」やつは繰り返した。
“I must get away from here. Rum! Rum!”

I ran to fetch it, but I was quite unsteadied by all that had fallen out,[喧嘩する] and I broke one glass and fouled[詰まらせる] the tap,

and while I was still getting in my own way,[自分で自分の足を引っ張る]

I heard a loud fall in the parlour, and running in, beheld the captain lying full length upon the floor.

At the same instant[時を同じくして] my mother, alarmed by the cries and fighting, came running downstairs to help me.
その瞬間、母が叫び声やけんかに驚いて、僕を助けに階下に駆け降りてきた。
Between us we raised his head.
母と二人でやつの頭を持ちあげた。
He was breathing[息をする] very loud and hard, but his eyes were closed and his face a horrible[恐ろしい] colour.
やつは大きく荒い息をしていたが、目は閉じられていて、顔色はひどかった。
Dear, deary me, cried my mother, “what a disgrace[不名誉, 恥辱] upon the house! And your poor father sick!”
あぁ、まったく、と母は叫んだ。「まったく家の恥だわ。かわいそうにお父さんは、病気だっていうのに」
In the meantime, we had no idea what to do to help the captain,
そうこうしているうちに、僕らにはキャプテンを助けるにはどうしたらいいかわからず、
nor any other thought but that he had got his death-hurt in the scuffle[取っ組み合い] with the stranger.
やつがあの見知らぬ男との乱闘で致命傷を負った、ということ以外はなんの考えも浮かばなかった。
I got the rum, to be sure, and tried to put it down his throat, but his teeth were tightly shut and his jaws as strong as iron.
たしかにラムだけは持ってきたので、喉に流そうとしたんだけど、やつの歯はぐっと固く閉じられていて、あごは鉄のように頑強だった。
It was a happy relief for us when the door opened and Doctor Livesey came in, on his visit to my father.
幸運なことにドアが開いて、リバシー先生が父の往診のためにやって来てくれ、僕たち二人はほっとした。
Oh, doctor, we cried, “what shall we do? Where is he wounded?”[負傷した]

Now, Mrs. Hawkins, just you run upstairs to your husband and tell him, if possible, nothing about it.

For my part, I must do my best to save this fellow’s trebly worthless life; Jim, you get me a basin.

When I got back with the basin, the doctor had already ripped up the captain’s sleeve and exposed his great sinewy arm.

It was tattooed in several places.

“Here’s luck,” “A fair wind,” and “Billy Bones his fancy,[空想]” were very neatly and clearly executed[制作された] on the forearm;

Prophetic, said the doctor, touching this picture with his finger.

Well, then, said he, “you hold[持つ, 握る] the basin”; and with that he took his lancet[ひらき針] and opened a vein.

A great deal of blood was taken before the captain opened his eyes and looked mistily about him.
キャプテンが目をあけるまでには大量の血が抜かれた。そして目をあけるとあたりをぼんやりと見まわした。
First he recognized the doctor with an unmistakable[間違えようのない, 紛れのない] frown;[まゆをひそめる, 顔をしかめる] then his glance fell upon me, and he looked relieved.
最初、ドクターがいることを知ると露骨に不愉快そうな顔をしたが、その後、視線が僕の方に向けられるとほっとしたようだった。
But suddenly his colour changed, and he tried to raise himself, crying, “Where’s Black Dog?”
しかし、突然、顔色が変わり、「ブラック・ドッグはどこにいる」と叫んで起き上がろうとした。
“There is no Black Dog here,” said the doctor, “except what you have on your own back.

You have been drinking rum; you have had a stroke, precisely[正確に, 精密に] as I told you;
ラムを飲み続けていたのだろう。だから、まさに私が言ったように発作を起こしたんだよ。
and I have just, very much against my own will, dragged you headforemost out of the grave.
で、私としてはまったく不本意だったが、いま、お前を墓場から（頭から）引き出してやったところだということさ。
Now, Mr. Bones–” “That’s not my name,” he interrupted.
さてボーンズ君…」「それはおれの名前じゃない」とキャプテンはさえぎった。
Much I care, returned the doctor. “It’s the name of a buccaneer of my acquaintance;
どうでもいいさ、とドクターは答えた。「それは私の知り合いの海賊の名前でね、
and I call you by it for the sake of shortness, and what I have to say to you is this;
おまえをそう呼ぶのは話を簡単にするためだ。それから、おまえに言っておかなくてはならないのは、こういうことさ。
one glass of rum won’t kill you, but if you take one you’ll take another and another,
ラム酒を1杯飲んでも死にはしないだろうが、1杯でも飲んだらもう1杯、さらにもう一杯となる、
and I stake my wig if you don’t break off short, you’ll die — do you understand that? –die,

and go to your own place, like the man in the Bible.

Come, now, make an effort. I’ll help you to your bed for once.” [一度]

Between us, with much trouble, we managed to hoist him upstairs, and laid him on his bed,
ふたりで苦労しながら、なんとかやつを二階に引き上げ、ベッドに寝かせたら、
where his head fell back on the pillow as if he were almost fainting.
やつはまるで失神したかのように、頭が枕の上に落ちてしまった。
Now, mind you, said the doctor, “I clear my conscience–the name of rum for you is death.”
いいか、よくきいておけ。ドクターはいった。「良心に従って（忠告しよう）–-お前にとってラムは死だと」
And with that he went off to see my father, taking me with him by the arm.
そう言って、ドクターは父を診るために僕の腕をひっぱって連れて出ていった。
“This is nothing,” he said as soon as he had closed the door.
「大したことはない」ドアをしめるとドクターはすぐにそう言った。
I have drawn blood enough to keep him quiet awhile; he should lie for a week where he is —
しばらく静かにしておくように、たっぷりと血を抜いておいてやった。一週間はそこで寝ているべきだな。
that is the best thing for him and you; but another stroke would settle[静かになる] him.
