IT was not very long after this that there occurred the first of the mysterious events

and it was plain from the first that my poor father was little likely to see the spring.

He sank daily, and my mother and I had all the inn upon our hands, [責任を持って運営する]

The captain had risen earlier than usual and set out[～に出発する] down the beach,

when the parlour door opened and a man stepped in on whom I had never set my eyes before.

He was a pale, tallowy[あぶらぎった, 青白い] creature,[やつ, 生き物] wanting[欠乏していて] two fingers of the left hand,

I had always my eye open for seafaring men, with one leg or two, and I remember this one puzzled me.

He was not sailorly, and yet he had a smack[香り] of the sea about him too.
そいつは船乗りっぽくは見えなかったが、やつと同じように海の匂いを漂わせていたのだ。
I asked him what was for his service, and he said he would take[食べる, 飲む] rum;
僕がその男に何にしますかと訊くと、そいつはラムをくれといったので、
but as I was going out of the room to fetch[取ってくる] it, he sat down upon a table and motioned me to draw near.
僕がラムを取りに部屋から出ようとしたら、テーブルの上に座り僕にこっちにこいと合図したのだ。
I paused where I was, with my napkin in my hand.
僕はナプキンを手にもったままその場に立ち止まった。
“Come here, sonny,” says he. “Come nearer here.” I took a step nearer.
「おいで坊や」とそいつは言った。「もっとこっちにきな」僕は一歩近づいた。
“Is this here table for my mate Bill?” he asked with a kind of leer.
「ここは俺の相棒のビルの席だな？」とその男は、いやらしい目つきで尋ねた。
I told him I did not know his mate Bill, and this was for a person who stayed in our house whom we called the captain.
僕は、あんたの仲間のビルなんて知らないけれど、ここはうちの宿に泊まっている、僕らがキャプテンって呼んでいる人の席だと答えた。
“Well,” said he, “my mate Bill would be called the captain, as like as not.
「なるほど」と、「俺の仲間のビルはキャプテンと呼ばれている、おそらくそんなところだろうな。
He has a cut on[切り傷] one cheek and a mighty[非常に] pleasant way[流儀, やり方] with him, particularly in drink, has my mate Bill.
やつは片ほおに傷を負っていて、とても愉快なふるまいをするやつだよ、特に酒を飲んだりするとな。俺の仲間のビルはな。
We’ll put it,[言う] for argument like,[～のような議論のために] that your captain has a cut on one cheek
おまえのキャプテンとやらに片頬に切り傷があるとしたとしよう、
–and we’ll put it, if you like,[もしよかったら] that that cheek’s the right one.
なんなら、そのほおは右ほおだとしよう。
Ah, well! I told you.[ほら、言ったとおりじゃないか] Now, is my mate Bill in this here house?”
どうだ、そうなんだろう。やっぱりそうじゃないか。俺の仲間のビルは、いま、この宿にいるんだな」
I told him he was out walking. “Which way,[どちら] sonny? Which way is he gone?”
僕はその男に外に散歩にいっていると答えた。「どっちだ、ぼうず、どっちに行ったんだ？」
And when I had pointed out the rock and told him how[どんな方法で] the captain was likely to return, and how soon, and answered a few other questions,
そして僕はあの岩の方を指さして、どこから、どれくらいでキャプテンが帰ってきそうなのかを教え、そのほかのいくつかの質問にも答えると、
Ah, said he, “this’ll be as good as drink to my mate Bill.”

The expression of his face as he said these words was not at all pleasant,

and I had my own reasons for thinking that the stranger was mistaken, even supposing he meant what he said.[意味したのは彼が言ったことだった]
それにこの見知らぬ男がたとえ本気でそう言っているのだとしても、その男は間違ってると思うだけの理由が僕にはあった。
But it was no affair[個人的な問題] of mine, I thought; and besides,[そのうえ] it was difficult to know what to do.
でも僕には関係ないことだと思ったし、それに、どうすればいいかもまったく分からなかった。
The stranger kept hanging about[あてもなくぶらつく] just inside the inn door, peering round the corner like a cat waiting for a mouse.
見知らぬ男は、宿のドアのすぐ内側のところでぶらぶらして、ねずみを待ちかまえている猫のように、角を曲がったところをじっと見ていた。
Once I stepped out myself into the road, but he immediately called me back, and as I did not obey quick enough for his fancy, [好み,嗜好]

a most horrible change came over his tallowy face, and he ordered me in with an oath that made me jump.

As soon as I was back again he returned to his former manner, half fawning, half sneering, patted me on the shoulder,

told me I was a good boy and he had taken quite a fancy to me.
いい子だ、大いに気に入ったぞと言った。
I have a son of my own, said he, “as like you as two blocks, and he’s all the pride of my ‘art.[the pride of one’s heart]
「俺にも息子がいる」とそいつは言った。おまえとそっくり同じような子供がな。俺の自慢だよ。
But the great thing for boys is discipline, sonny–discipline.
だが男の子にとって大事なのは躾（しつけ）なんだよ、ぼうず–躾だ。
Now, if you had sailed along of Bill, you wouldn’t have stood there to be spoke to twice–not you.
もしおまえがビルと一緒に船に乗っていたら、そこに立ってられないぞ。二言目には…。立ってはいられないさ。
That was never Bill’s way, nor the way of sich as sailed with him.
ビルだけ（のやり方）じゃない。やつと一緒に航海をしてきた（俺たちのような）やつらならみんなそうだ。
And here, sure enough,[はたして, 本当に] is my mate Bill, with a spy-glass under his arm, bless his old ‘art, to be sure.
おっ、いいぞ、たしかに、俺の仲間のビルだ。小型望遠鏡を腕の下に挟む、あの昔ながらのクセは、間違いない。
You and me’ll just go back into the parlour, sonny, and get behind the door,
ぼうず、おまえと俺は食堂まで戻ってドアのうしろに隠れ、
and we’ll give Bill a little surprise–bless his ‘art,[bless one’s heart] I say again.
少しビルを驚かしてやろうぜ。乾杯だ」
So saying, the stranger backed along with me into the parlour
そういって、その見知らぬ男は僕を食堂の中まで僕をひきつれてもどり、
and put me behind him in the corner so that we were both hidden by the open door.
そして僕をそいつの後ろの隅に立たせ、ふたりとも開いたドアの陰に隠れるようにした。
I was very uneasy and alarmed,[恐れて, 不安を感じて] as you may fancy,
ご想像のとおり、僕はとても不安でどきどきした。
and it rather added to my fears to observe[観察して] that the stranger was certainly frightened[怯えている] himself.
さらに、間違いなくその見知らぬ男自身もびくびくしていることに気づいて、いっそう恐怖はつのるばかりだった。
He cleared the hilt[柄] of his cutlass and loosened[ゆるめる] the blade in the sheath;
そいつはカットラスの鯉口を切り、鞘（さや）の刀を弛めた。
and all the time we were waiting there he kept swallowing as if he felt what we used to call [私たちが～と呼んでいた]a lump in the throat.
そこで待っているあいだずっと、喉のなかに塊（と呼ぶようなもの）でもあるかのように、つばを飲み込み続けていた。
At last in strode the captain, slammed the door behind him, without looking to the right or left,
とうとう、キャプテンが大股に歩いてやってきて、右も左も見ることなく後ろのドアをバタンと閉め、
and marched straight across the room to where his breakfast awaited[待ち受ける] him.
朝食が用意されているところまで、部屋をよこぎってまっすぐに歩いていった。
“Bill,” said the stranger in a voice that I thought he had tried to make bold[大胆な, 勇敢な] and big.
「ビル」と、その見知らぬ男は、自分を力強く大きくみせかけようとしているような声で言った。
The captain spun round on his heel and fronted us; all the brown had gone out of his face,[すべての褐色が顔から出ていき] and even his nose was blue;
キャプテンはかかとでくるりと向きを変え、僕たちと顔を向きあわせた。褐色のやつの顔は色を失い、鼻まで真っ青だった。
he had the look of a man who sees a ghost, or the evil one,[悪魔, 魔王] or something worse, if anything can be;
やつは幽霊か悪霊、あるいはもっと悪い何かでも、もしそんなものがあったとしたらだが、を見る人のような顔つきだった。
and upon my word, I felt sorry to see him all in a moment turn so old and sick.
誓っていうが、僕は一瞬にしてすっかり老けこみ、まるで病人のようになったやつをみて気の毒に思った。
