『青い鳥』モーリス・メーテルリンク　第6章「光の神殿」

Tyltyl had enjoyed himself thoroughly in the Kingdom of the Future.

チルチルは未来の王国で大いに楽しみました。

He had seen many wonderful things and thousands of little playfellows.

彼はたくさんのすばらしいものと、何千人もの小さな遊び仲間を見ました。

And then, without taking the least pains or trouble, had found the Blue Bird in his arms in the most magical way.

そして、少しも苦労も手間もかけずに、最も魔法のような形で、青い鳥を腕の中に見つけたのです。

He had never pictured anything more beautiful, more blue or brilliant.

彼は、それ以上に美しく、それ以上に青く、それ以上に輝かしいものを思い描いたことがありませんでした。

And he still felt it fluttering against his heart and kept hugging his arms to his breast as though the Blue Bird were there.

そして彼は今でも、その鳥が胸に羽ばたいているように感じ、まるで青い鳥がまだそこにいるかのように、両腕を胸に抱きしめ続けていました。

Alas, it had vanished like a dream!

ああ、それは夢のように消えてしまったのです。

He was thinking sadly of this latest disappointment as he walked hand-in-hand with Light.

彼は光と手をつないで歩きながら、この最近の失望について悲しげに考えていました。

They were back in the Temple and were going to the vaults where the Animals and Things had been shut up.

彼らは神殿へ戻り、動物たちや物たちが閉じ込められていた地下室へ向かっていました。

What a sight met their eyes!

そこで彼らの目に飛び込んできたのは、なんという光景だったでしょう。

The wretches had eaten and drunk such a lot that they were lying on the floor quite tipsy!

その哀れな連中は、あまりにもたくさん食べたり飲んだりしたので、すっかり酔っぱらって床に横たわっていたのです。

Tylô himself had lost all his dignity.

チロー自身も、すっかり威厳を失っていました。

He had rolled under the table and was snoring like a porpoise.

彼はテーブルの下に転がり込み、ネズミイルカのようないびきをかいていました。

His instinct remained; and the sound of the door made him prick up his ears.

それでも彼の本能は残っていました。扉の音を聞くと、彼は耳をぴんと立てました。

He opened one eye, but his sight was troubled by all that he had had to drink.

彼は片目を開けましたが、飲みすぎたせいで視界はぼやけていました。

And he did not know his little master when he saw him.

そして、小さな主人を見ても、それが誰なのかわかりませんでした。

He dragged himself to his feet with a great effort.

彼は大変な努力で体を引きずるようにして立ち上がりました。

Turned round several times and then dropped on the floor again with a grunt of satisfaction.

何度かぐるぐる回ったあと、満足げにうなって、また床に倒れ込みました。

Bread and the others were as bad; and the only exception was the Cat.

パンやほかの者たちも同じようにひどい状態でした。唯一の例外は猫でした。

She was sitting up prettily on a marble and gold bench and seemed in full possession of her senses.

彼女は大理石と金でできたベンチの上にきれいに座っており、完全に正気を保っているように見えました。

She sprang nimbly to the ground and stepped up to Tyltyl with a smile:

彼女は軽やかに地面へ飛び降り、微笑みながらチルチルのそばへ歩み寄りました。

“I have been longing to see you,” she said, “for I have been very unhappy among all these vulgar people.”

「あなたに会いたくてたまりませんでした」と彼女は言いました。「この下品な人たちの中で、とても不幸だったのです」

“They first drank all the wine and then started shouting and singing and dancing, quarrelling and fighting and making such a noise.”

「彼らはまずワインを全部飲み干し、それから叫び、歌い、踊り、口論し、けんかし、ひどい騒音を立て始めました」

“I was very glad when, at last, they fell into a tipsy sleep.”

「ようやく彼らが酔いつぶれて眠り込んだとき、私は本当にうれしかったのです」

The children praised her warmly for her good behaviour.

子どもたちは、彼女のよいふるまいを心からほめました。

As a matter of fact, there was no great merit in this, for she could not stand anything stronger than milk.

実のところ、これにはそれほど大した手柄はありませんでした。彼女はミルクより強いものには耐えられなかったからです。

But we are seldom rewarded when by rights we ought to be and sometimes are when we have not deserved it.

しかし私たちは、本来報われるべきときにはめったに報われず、逆に報われるに値しないときに報われることもあるのです。

After fondly kissing the children, Tylette asked a favour of Light:

子どもたちに愛情をこめてキスをしたあと、チレットは光にお願いをしました。

“I have had such a wretched time,” she whined.

「私は本当にみじめな時間を過ごしました」と彼女は泣き言を言いました。

“Let me go out for a little while; it will do me good to be alone.”

「少しだけ外へ出させてください。一人になることが私のためになるでしょう」

Light gave her consent without suspecting anything.

And the Cat at once draped her cloak round her, put her hat straight, pulled up her soft grey boots over her knees.

すると猫はすぐにマントを身にまとい、帽子をまっすぐに直し、柔らかな灰色の長靴を膝の上まで引き上げました。

Opened the door and ran and bounded out into the forest.

そして扉を開け、森の中へ走り、跳ねながら出ていきました。

We shall know, a little later, where treacherous Tylette was going so gaily.

裏切り者のチレットが、あんなに陽気にどこへ向かっていたのかは、少しあとでわかるでしょう。

And what was the horrid plot which she was mysteriously concocting.

そして彼女が謎めいて企んでいた恐ろしい陰謀が何だったのかも、わかることになります。

As on the other days, the Children had their dinner with Light in a large room all encrusted with diamonds.

ほかの日と同じように、子どもたちはダイヤモンドが一面にちりばめられた大きな部屋で、光と一緒に夕食をとりました。

The servants bustled around them smiling and brought delicious dishes and cakes.

召使いたちは微笑みながら彼らの周りをせわしなく動き回り、おいしい料理やケーキを運んできました。

After dinner, our little friends began to yawn.

夕食のあと、小さな友人たちはあくびをし始めました。

They felt sleepy very early, after all their adventures.

たくさんの冒険のあとだったので、彼らはとても早く眠くなりました。

And, Light—ever kind and thoughtful—made them live as they were accustomed to on earth.

そして光は、いつも親切で思いやり深く、子どもたちが地上で慣れているように暮らせるようにしました。

So as not to injure their health by altering their habits, she had set up their little beds in a part of the temple.

習慣を変えて健康を害さないように、光は神殿の一部に子どもたちの小さなベッドを用意していました。

Where the darkness would seem like night to them.

そこでは、闇が子どもたちには夜のように見えるのでした。

They went through any number of rooms to reach their bedroom.

寝室へたどり着くまでに、彼らは数えきれないほどの部屋を通り抜けました。

They had first to pass all the lights known to Man and then those which Man did not yet know.

彼らはまず、人間に知られているすべての光を通り抜け、それから人間がまだ知らない光を通らなければなりませんでした。

There were great sumptuous apartments in splendid marble, lit up by rays so white and strong that the children were quite dazzled.

そこには、立派な大理石でできた豪華な部屋がありました。あまりにも白く強い光線に照らされていたので、子どもたちはすっかり目がくらんでしまいました。

“That is the Light of the Rich,” said Light to Tyltyl.

「あれは富める者の光です」と光はチルチルに言いました。

“You see how dangerous it is.”

「それがどれほど危険かわかるでしょう」

“People run the risk of going blind when they live too much in its rays.”

「その光の中で暮らしすぎると、人は目が見えなくなる危険を冒すのです」

“Which leave no room for soft and kindly shade.”

「その光は、柔らかく優しい影の余地を残さないのです」

And she hurried them on so that they might rest their eyes in the gentle Light of the Poor.

そして光は、子どもたちが穏やかな貧しき者の光の中で目を休められるよう、急いで先へ進ませました。

Here, the Children suddenly felt as if they were in their parents’ cottage, where everything was so humble and peaceful.

ここで子どもたちは突然、両親の小屋にいるように感じました。そこではすべてがとても質素で平和だったのです。

The faint light was very pure and clear, but always flickering and ready to go out at the least breath.

かすかな光はとても清らかで澄んでいましたが、いつも揺らめき、ほんのわずかな息でも消えそうでした。

Next they came to the beautiful Light of the Poets, which they liked immensely.

次に彼らは、美しい詩人たちの光のところへ来ました。子どもたちはそれを大いに気に入りました。

For it had all the colours of the rainbow; and, when you passed through it, you saw lovely pictures, lovely flowers and lovely toys.

なぜなら、それは虹のすべての色を持っていたからです。そしてその中を通ると、美しい絵、美しい花、美しいおもちゃが見えました。

Which you were unable to take hold of.

けれど、それらをつかむことはできませんでした。

Laughing merrily, the children ran after birds and butterflies, but everything faded away as soon as it was touched.

子どもたちは楽しそうに笑いながら、鳥や蝶を追いかけました。しかし触れた瞬間、すべてが消えていきました。

“Well, I never!” said Tyltyl, as he came panting back to Light.

「まったく、驚いた！」と、チルチルは息を切らして光のもとへ戻りながら言いました。

“This beats everything! I can’t understand it!”

「これは何よりもすごいよ！ でも理解できない！」

“You will understand later,” she replied, “and, if you understand it properly, you will be among the very few human beings who know the Blue Bird when they see him.”

「あとでわかるでしょう」と光は答えました。「もしそれを正しく理解できれば、青い鳥を見たときにそれがわかる、ごく少数の人間の一人になれるでしょう」

After leaving the region of the Poets, our friends reached the Light of the Learned.

詩人たちの領域を離れたあと、友人たちは学者たちの光へたどり着きました。

Which lies on the borders of the known and the unknown lights:

それは、知られている光と、未知の光との境界にありました。

“Let’s get on,” said Tyltyl. “This is boring.”

「先へ進もう」とチルチルは言いました。「ここは退屈だよ」

To tell the truth, he was a little bit frightened.

実を言うと、彼は少し怖がっていました。

For they were in a long row of cold and forbidding arches.

なぜなら、彼らは冷たく近寄りがたいアーチが長く並ぶ場所にいたからです。

Which were streaked at every moment by dazzling lightning-flashes.

そこには、まばゆい稲妻の閃光が絶えず筋のように走っていました。

And, at each flash, you saw out-of-the-way things that had no name as yet.

そして閃光のたびに、まだ名前のない珍しいものが見えました。

After these arches, they came to the Lights Unknown to Man.

そのアーチを過ぎると、彼らは人間に知られざる光のところへ来ました。

And Tyltyl, in spite of the sleep that pressed upon his eyelids, could not help admiring the hall with its violet columns and the gallery with its red rays.

そしてチルチルは、眠気がまぶたに重くのしかかっていたにもかかわらず、紫色の柱を持つ広間や、赤い光線の回廊に見とれずにはいられませんでした。

And the violet of the columns was such a dark violet and the red of the rays such a pale red that it was hardly possible to see either of them.

柱の紫はあまりにも暗い紫で、光線の赤はあまりにも淡い赤だったので、どちらもほとんど見ることができないほどでした。

At last, they arrived at the room of smooth, unflecked Black Light.

ついに彼らは、なめらかでしみ一つない黒い光の部屋へたどり着きました。

Which men call Darkness because their eyes are not yet able to make it out.

人間はそれを闇と呼んでいます。なぜなら、人間の目はまだそれを見分けることができないからです。

And here the Children fell asleep without delay on two soft beds of clouds.

そしてここで子どもたちは、二つの柔らかな雲のベッドの上で、すぐに眠りに落ちました。
