The inspector had attained his object.[目的]
警部はドアに到着した。
Taking advantage of[利用して] a second when Lupin had turned away from[〔…から〕顔をそむける] him, he suddenly wheeled round[旋回軸で回転するかのように方向を変える] and grasped the door-handle.
ルパンが背を向けた一瞬の隙をついて、ガニマールはいきなり向きを変えドアの取っ手を掴んだ。
But an oath escaped him: the handle did not budge.[(ちょっと)動く]
しかし、彼の口から「ちくしょう」という罵り声が漏れた。取っ手はびくともしなかった。
Lupin burst into a fit of laughing:
ルパンはブッと吹き出した。
“Not even that! You did not even foresee that！
「それすら！そんなことすら予想していなかったのかい！？
You lay a trap[罠を仕掛ける] for me and you won’t admit[～だと認める] that I may perhaps smell the thing out beforehand….
君が仕掛けた罠に僕が事前に嗅ぎつけているかもしれないってことも感づかないとは……。
And you allow yourself to[あえて～する] be brought into[～を〔ある状態に〕もってくる] this room without asking whether I am not bringing you here for a particular reason
そして、僕が君を連れてきたのは特別な理由があるからではないかとも聞かず、この部屋にのこのこと連れて来られたんだ。
and without remembering[思い出す] that the locks are fitted with a special mechanism.
鍵が特別な仕組みで取り付けられていることも忘れてね。
Come now, speaking frankly, what do you think of it yourself?”
さあ、率直に言って、君自身はどう思っているんだい？」
“What do I think of it?” roared Ganimard, beside himself[我を忘れて] with rage.
「どう思っているかだと？」ガニマールは怒りで逆上して怒鳴った。
He had drawn his revolver and was pointing it straight at Lupin’s face.
彼はリボルバー銃を抜いて、ルパンの顔にまっすぐ向けた。
“Hands up!” he cried. “That’s what I think of it!”
「手を挙げろ！」「これが答えだ！」と彼は叫んだ。
Lupin placed himself in front of him and shrugged his shoulders:
ルパンは彼の前に身を置き、肩をすくめた。
“Sold[been sold] again!” he said.
「またへまをすることになるよ」とルパンは言った。
“Hands up, I say, once more!”
「もう一度言うぞ、手を上げろ！」
“And sold again, say I. Your deadly weapon[凶器] won’t go off.“[爆発する]
「言ったじゃないか、へまをするって。その拳銃は弾丸が出ないよ」
“What?”
「なんだと？」
“Old Catherine, your housekeeper, is in my service.
「家政婦のカトリーヌ婆さんは僕の手下なのさ。
She damped the charges[装薬] this morning while you were having your breakfast coffee.”
今朝、君がコーヒーを飲んでいる間に詰めてあった火薬を湿らせたのさ」
Ganimard made a furious gesture, pocketed the revolver and rushed at Lupin.
ガニマールは怒り狂った身振りでリボルバー銃をポケットに入れ、ルパンに突進した。
“Well?” said Lupin, stopping him short[～の寸前［手前］で止める] with a well-aimed[狙いすました] kick on the shin.[向こうずね]
「それで？」とルパンは狙いすました蹴りをすねに当てて、ガニマールを止めた。
Their clothes were almost touching.
二人の服がほとんど触れんばかりだった。
They exchanged defiant[反抗的な] glances, the glances of two adversaries[敵] who mean to come to blows.
二人はにらみ合い、（敵同士のにらみ合いは）いまにも殴り合いが始まらんばかりだった。
Nevertheless, there was no fight.
けれども、戦いはなかった。
The recollection of the earlier[昔の] struggles made any present struggle useless.[現在の闘争を無駄にした]
以前の戦いの記憶から、今戦ったとしても無駄だとわかっていた。
And Ganimard, who remembered all his past failures, his vain attacks, Lupin’s crushing[圧倒的な] reprisals,[仕返し] did not lift a limb.
ガニマールは、過去の敗北や徒労に終わった攻撃、ルパンの痛烈な反撃を思いだし、手も足も出なかった。
There was nothing to be done. He felt it.
何もできる事はなかった。彼はそう感じた。
Lupin had forces at his command[彼の命令で] against which[～に対して] any individual[個々の] force simply broke to pieces.
ルパンは、あらゆる力をたやすく粉々にしてしまうような圧倒的な力をもっている。
So what was the good?
なら、どうすれば良いんだ？
“I agree,” said Lupin, in a friendly voice, as though answering Ganimard’s unspoken thought,
「僕もそう思うよ」 と、親しげな声でルパンは言った。まるでガニマールの声に出さない思いに答えるようだった。
“you would do better to let things be as they are.
「（この件は）このままにしておいたほうがいいよ」
Besides, friend of my youth,[わが青春の友よ] think of all that this incident has brought you:
それに君、この事件が君にもたらすものを考えてみてくれよ。
fame, the certainty[確実(なこと)] of quick promotion and, thanks to that, the prospect of[見通し] a happy and comfortable old age!
名声、近いうちに確実にやってくる昇進、そしてそのおかげで、幸せで快適な老後を迎えられそうなんだぞ！
Surely, you don’t want the discovery of the sapphire[サファイアの発見] and the head of poor Arsène Lupin in addition!
よもや、サファイアや、おまけにこの可哀そうなアルセーヌ・ルパンの首[頭]までほしいとは言わないだろうね！
It wouldn’t be fair.[それは公平ではないだろう]
それは欲張り過ぎというものだよ。
To say nothing of the fact that poor Arsène Lupin saved your life….
言うまでもないことだが、この哀れなアルセーヌ・ルパンが君の命を救ったという…
Yes, sir! Who warned you, at this very spot, that Prévailles was left-handed?…
そうとも！誰がまさにこの場所で、プレヴァイユが左利きだと警告してやったんだい？
And is this the way you thank me? It’s not pretty of you, Ganimard.
それなのに、君はこんな風なお礼するのか？みっともないぞ、ガニマール。
Upon my word, you make me blush for you!”
まったく、君には赤面させられるよ！」
While chattering, Lupin had gone through[やってしまう] the same performance[ふるまい] as Ganimard and was now near the door.
会話をしながら、ルパンはさっきガニマールがしたように、ドアに近づいた。
Ganimard saw that his foe was about to escape him.
ガニマールには敵が逃げ出そうとしているのが分かった。
Forgetting all prudence, he tried to block his way and received a tremendous[ものすごい] butt[頭突き] in the stomach, which sent him rolling to the opposite wall.
慎重さを忘れてルパンの行く手を阻もうとしたガニマールは、腹に強烈な頭突きを受け、反対側の壁に転がっていった。
Lupin dexterously[みごとに, 巧みに] touched a spring, turned the handle, opened the door and slipped away, roaring with laughter as he went.
ルパンは手際よく（鍵の）バネを押し、取っ手をまわし、ドアを開けて抜け出し、歩きながらゲラゲラと笑った。
Twenty minutes later, when Ganimard at last succeeded in joining[加わることに成功する] his men, one of them said to him:
20分後、ようやくガニマールは部下と合流することができた。そのとき、部下の一人がガニマールに言った。
“A house-painter left the house, as his mates were coming back from breakfast, and put a letter in my hand.
「ひとりのペンキ職人があの家から出てきまして、ちょうどほかの職人仲間たちも朝食から戻って来た時分なのですが、その職人が私の元に手紙を持ってきました。
‘Give that to your governor,’[長官,所長] he said.
『あんたの親分にそれを渡してくれ』と言ったんです。
‘Which governor?’ I asked; but he was gone.
『どの親分にだ？』と尋ねたんですが、彼はいなくなってました。
I suppose it’s meant for you.”
たぶん、警部のことではないかと思います」
“Let’s have it.”
「よこせ」
Ganimard opened the letter. It was hurriedly scribbled in pencil and contained[含んでいた] these words:
ガニマールは手紙を開けた。それは鉛筆で急いで走り書きされ、次のように書かれていた
“This is to warn you, friend of my youth, against excessive credulity.[信じやすいこと]
「これは、我が友である君の行き過ぎた馬鹿正直さを警告するものだよ。
When a fellow tells you that the cartridges[弾薬筒] in your revolver are damp,
リボルバーの薬莢が湿っていると言う奴がいたら、
however great your confidence in[信用, 信頼] that fellow[男, やつ] may be, even though his name be Arsène Lupin, never allow yourself to[思い切って～する] be taken in.[〈虚報などを〉真に受ける]
そいつがたとえ、君の信望厚いアルセーヌ・ルパンという名前であっても、決して騙されてはいけないんだよ。
Fire first; and, if the fellow hops the twig,[逃げる,死ぬ] you will have acquired[～を獲得する] the proof (1) that the cartridges are not damp;
まず、発砲してみるんだ。もしそいつ死んだら、第一に、薬莢は湿っていないという証拠を手に入れることができたんだよ。
and (2) that old Catherine is the most honest and respectable of housekeepers.
第2には、カトリーヌ婆さんはこの上なく正直で尊敬に値する家政婦だということもね。
“One of these days, I hope to have the pleasure of making her acquaintance.”
「いつかそのうち、彼女とお近づきになりたいと思っているよ」
