[Enter King, Queen, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.]

王、王妃、ローゼンクランツ、ギルデンスターンが入る。

KING. There’s matter in these sighs. These profound heaves You must translate; ’tis fit we understand them. Where is your son?

王：そのため息には何か事情がある。その深い胸の震えを、あなたは読み解かねばならない。私たちが理解するのが当然だ。あなたの息子はどこにいる？

QUEEN. Bestow this place on us a little while.

王妃：少しの間、私たちだけにしてください。

[To Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who go out.]

王妃はローゼンクランツとギルデンスターンに言い、二人は退出する。

QUEEN. Ah, my good lord, what have I seen tonight!

王妃：ああ、陛下、今夜わたしは何というものを見たのでしょう！

KING. What, Gertrude? How does Hamlet?

王：何だ、ガートルード？ ハムレットはどうしたのだ？

QUEEN. Mad as the sea and wind, when both contend Which is the mightier.

王妃：海と風が、どちらが強いか争うときのように狂っています。

QUEEN. In his lawless fit, Behind the arras hearing something stir, Whips out his rapier, cries ‘A rat, a rat!’

王妃：無法な発作の中で、掛け幕の後ろで何かが動くのを聞くと、剣を抜き、『ネズミだ、ネズミだ！』と叫びました。

QUEEN. And in this brainish apprehension kills The unseen good old man.

王妃：そしてその狂った思い込みの中で、見えないところにいた善良な老人を殺してしまったのです。

KING. O heavy deed! It had been so with us, had we been there.

王：ああ、何という重い所業だ！ もし私がそこにいたなら、同じことが私に起きていただろう。

KING. His liberty is full of threats to all; To you yourself, to us, to everyone.

王：彼を自由にしておくことは、すべての者への脅威に満ちている。あなた自身にも、私にも、誰にとってもだ。

KING. Alas, how shall this bloody deed be answer’d? It will be laid to us.

王：ああ、この血なまぐさい行為の責任はどう問われることになるのか。これは私たちの責任にされるだろう。

KING. Our providence should have kept short, restrain’d, and out of haunt This mad young man.

王：私たちの用心が、この狂った若者をもっと短く抑え、拘束し、人目から遠ざけておくべきだったのだ。

KING. But so much was our love, We would not understand what was most fit.

王：しかし私たちの愛情が深すぎたために、何が最も適切かを理解しようとしなかった。

KING. Like the owner of a foul disease, To keep it from divulging, let it feed Even on the pith of life. Where is he gone?

王：汚れた病を持つ者が、それを露見させまいとして隠し、ついには命の髄まで食い荒らさせるようなものだった。彼はどこへ行った？

QUEEN. To draw apart the body he hath kill’d, O’er whom his very madness, like some ore Among a mineral of metals base, Shows itself pure.

王妃：彼は自分が殺した死体を別の場所へ移しに行きました。その死体の前では、彼の狂気そのものが、卑しい金属の中にある鉱石のように、純粋なものとして現れていました。

QUEEN. He weeps for what is done.

王妃：彼は自分のしたことを思って泣いています。

KING. O Gertrude, come away! The sun no sooner shall the mountains touch But we will ship him hence.

王：おお、ガートルード、来るのだ！ 太陽が山々に触れるやいなや、私たちは彼を船で送り出す。

KING. And this vile deed We must with all our majesty and skill Both countenance and excuse.

王：そしてこの卑劣な行為を、王としての威厳と手腕のすべてを使って、体面を保ち、弁明しなければならない。

KING. Ho, Guildenstern!

王：おい、ギルデンスターン！

[Re-enter Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.]

ローゼンクランツとギルデンスターンが再び入る。

KING. Friends both, go join you with some further aid: Hamlet in madness hath Polonius slain.

王：二人とも、さらに助けを集めて行け。ハムレットは狂気の中でポローニアスを殺した。

KING. And from his mother’s closet hath he dragg’d him. Go seek him out, speak fair.

王：そして母親の私室から、その死体を引きずり出した。彼を探し出し、穏やかに話せ。

KING. And bring the body Into the chapel. I pray you haste in this.

王：そして死体を礼拝堂へ運べ。この件は急いでくれ。

[Exeunt Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.]

ローゼンクランツとギルデンスターンが退場する。

KING. Come, Gertrude, we’ll call up our wisest friends, And let them know both what we mean to do And what’s untimely done.

王：さあ、ガートルード、最も賢明な友人たちを呼び集めよう。そして、私たちが何をしようとしているか、また時ならず起きてしまったことを知らせるのだ。

KING. So haply slander, Whose whisper o’er the world’s diameter, As level as the cannon to his blank, Transports his poison’d shot…

王：そうすれば、おそらく中傷というもの――そのささやきが世界の端から端まで、大砲が標的を狙うようにまっすぐ、毒を塗った弾を運ぶもの――も……

KING. May miss our name, And hit the woundless air. O, come away! My soul is full of discord and dismay.

王：私たちの名には当たらず、傷つくことのない空気だけを撃つことになるだろう。ああ、行こう！ 私の魂は不協和と恐れに満ちている。

[Exeunt.]

一同退場する。
