『青い鳥』第9章「別れ」

Weeks and months had passed since the children’s departure on their journey.

子どもたちが旅に出発してから、何週間も何か月も過ぎていました。

And the hour of separation was at hand.

そして別れの時が近づいていました。

Light had been very sad lately.

光は最近、とても悲しんでいました。

She had counted the days in sorrow, without a word to the Animals and Things.

彼女は悲しみのうちに日々を数えていましたが、動物たちや物たちには一言も話しませんでした。

Who had no idea of the misfortune that threatened them.

彼らは、自分たちに迫っている不幸について、まったく知りませんでした。

On the day when we see them for the last time, they were all out in the gardens of the temple.

私たちが彼らを最後に見るその日、彼らはみな神殿の庭に出ていました。

Light stood watching them from a marble terrace, with Tyltyl and Mytyl sleeping by her side.

光は大理石のテラスから彼らを見守っていました。そばではチルチルとミチルが眠っていました。

Much had happened in the past twelve months.

この十二か月の間に、多くのことが起こりました。

But the life of the Animals and Things, which had no intelligence to guide it, had made no progress, on the contrary.

しかし、導いてくれる知性を持たない動物たちや物たちの生活は、進歩するどころか、むしろその反対でした。

Bread had eaten so much that he was now not able to walk.

パンはあまりにも食べすぎたため、今では歩くこともできませんでした。

Milk, devoted as ever, dragged him along in a Bath chair.

ミルクは相変わらず献身的で、彼を車椅子に乗せて引いていました。

Fire’s nasty temper had made him quarrel with everybody.

火の意地悪な性質は、彼を誰とでも口論させました。

And he had become very lonely and unhappy in consequence.

その結果、彼はとても孤独で不幸になっていました。

Water, who had no will of her own, had ended by yielding to Sugar’s sweet entreaties.

自分の意志を持たない水は、ついに砂糖の甘い懇願に屈してしまいました。

They were now married; and Sugar presented a most piteous sight.

二人は今では結婚していました。そして砂糖は、たいへん哀れな姿をしていました。

The poor fellow was reduced to a shadow of his former self.

かわいそうな彼は、以前の面影の影のようにやせ細っていました。

He shrank visibly day by day and was sillier than ever.

彼は日ごとに目に見えて縮み、以前にも増して愚かになっていました。

While Water, in marrying, had lost her principal charm, her simplicity.

一方、水は結婚によって、彼女の主要な魅力である素朴さを失ってしまいました。

The Cat had remained the liar that she always was.

猫は、いつも通りの嘘つきのままでした。

And our dear friend Tylô had never been able to overcome his hatred for her.

そして親愛なる友人チローは、彼女への憎しみを決して克服することができませんでした。

“Poor things!” thought Light, with a sigh.

「かわいそうな者たち」と、光はため息をつきながら思いました。

“They have not gained much by receiving the benefit of life!”

「命の恩恵を受けても、彼らはあまり多くを得なかったのです！」

“They have travelled and seen nothing of all the wonders that surrounded them in my peaceful temple.”

「彼らは旅をしたのに、私の平和な神殿で彼らを囲んでいたあらゆる驚異を何も見ませんでした」

“They were either quarrelling with one another or over-eating themselves until they fell ill.”

「彼らは互いに口論しているか、病気になるまで食べすぎているかのどちらかでした」

“They were too foolish to enjoy their happiness.”

「彼らは自分たちの幸福を楽しむには愚かすぎました」

“And they will recognize it for the first time presently, when they are about to lose it….”

「そしてまもなく、それを失おうとするときに、初めてその幸福を認識するでしょう……」

At that moment, a pretty dove, with silver wings, alighted on her knees.

その瞬間、銀の翼を持つ美しい鳩が、彼女の膝の上に舞い降りました。

It wore an emerald collar round its neck, with a note fastened to the clasp.

その鳩は首にエメラルドの首輪をつけており、留め金には手紙が結びつけられていました。

The dove was the Fairy Bérylune’s messenger.

その鳩は妖精ベリリューヌの使者でした。

Light opened the letter and read these few words:

光は手紙を開き、短い言葉を読みました。

“Remember that the year is over.”

「一年が終わったことを忘れないように」

Then Light stood up, waved her wand and everything disappeared from sight.

それから光は立ち上がり、杖を振りました。すると、すべてが視界から消えました。

A few seconds later, the whole company were gathered together outside a high wall with a small door in it.

数秒後、一行は、小さな扉のついた高い壁の外に集まっていました。

The first rays of the dawn were gilding the tree-tops.

夜明けの最初の光が、木々のこずえを金色に染めていました。

Tyltyl and Mytyl, whom Light was fondly supporting with her arms, woke up.

光が腕で愛情深く支えていたチルチルとミチルは、目を覚ましました。

They rubbed their eyes and looked around them in astonishment.

二人は目をこすり、驚いて周囲を見回しました。

“What?” said Light to Tyltyl. “Don’t you know that wall and that little door?”

「まあ」と光はチルチルに言いました。「あの壁と小さな扉がわからないのですか？」

The sleepy boy shook his head: he remembered nothing.

眠そうな少年は首を振りました。彼は何も思い出せませんでした。

Then Light assisted his memory:

そこで光は、彼の記憶を助けました。

“The wall,” she said, “surrounds a house which we left one evening just a year ago to-day….”

「この壁は」と彼女は言いました。「ちょうど一年前の今日の夕方、私たちが出発した家を囲んでいるのです……」

“Just a year ago?… Why, then….”

「ちょうど一年前？……それなら……」

And, clapping his hands with glee, Tyltyl ran to the door.

そしてチルチルは喜んで手をたたき、扉へ走っていきました。

“We must be near Mummy!… I want to kiss her at once, at once, at once!”

「お母さんの近くにいるんだ！……すぐに、すぐに、すぐにキスしたい！」

But Light stopped him.

しかし光は彼を止めました。

It was too early, she said: Mummy and Daddy were still asleep and he must not wake them with a start.

まだ早すぎる、と光は言いました。お母さんとお父さんはまだ眠っており、突然起こしてはいけないのです。

“Besides,” she added, “the door will not open till the hour strikes.”

「それに」と彼女は付け加えました。「その時刻が鳴るまで、扉は開きません」

“What hour?” asked the boy.

「何の時刻？」と少年は尋ねました。

“The hour of separation,” Light answered, sadly.

「別れの時刻です」と光は悲しげに答えました。

“What!” said Tyltyl, in great distress. “Are you leaving us?”

「えっ！」とチルチルは大きな苦悩の中で言いました。「あなたは僕たちから去ってしまうの？」

“I must,” said Light. “The year is past.”

「そうしなければなりません」と光は言いました。「一年が過ぎたのです」

“The Fairy will come back and ask you for the Blue Bird.”

「妖精が戻ってきて、青い鳥を求めるでしょう」

“But I haven’t got the Blue Bird!” cried Tyltyl.

「でも、僕は青い鳥を持っていないよ！」とチルチルは叫びました。

“The one of the Land of Memory turned quite black, the one of the Future flew away.”

「思い出の国の鳥は真っ黒になって、未来の鳥は飛んで行ってしまった」

“The Night’s are dead, those in the Graveyard were not blue and I could not catch the one in the Forest!…”

「夜の鳥たちは死んでしまったし、墓地の鳥は青くなかったし、森の鳥は捕まえられなかった！……」

“Will the Fairy be angry?… What will she say?…”

「妖精は怒るかな？……何て言うかな？……」

“Never mind, dear,” said Light.

「気にしなくてよいのです、かわいい子」と光は言いました。

“You did your best.”

「あなたは最善を尽くしました」

“And, though you did not find the Blue Bird, you deserved to do so.”

「そして、青い鳥を見つけることはできませんでしたが、あなたにはそれに値するだけのものがありました」

“For the good-will, pluck and courage which you showed.”

「あなたが示した善意、勇気、そして勇敢さのためです」

Light’s face beamed with happiness as she spoke these words.

光がそう言うと、彼女の顔は幸福で輝きました。

For she knew that to deserve to find the Blue Bird was very much the same thing as finding it.

なぜなら、青い鳥を見つけるに値するということは、それを見つけることとほとんど同じだと、彼女は知っていたからです。

But she was not allowed to say this, for it was a beautiful mystery, which Tyltyl had to solve for himself.

しかし彼女はそれを言うことを許されていませんでした。それはチルチルが自分自身で解かなければならない、美しい神秘だったからです。

She turned to the Animals and Things, who stood weeping in a corner.

彼女は、隅で泣いて立っている動物たちと物たちの方を向きました。

And told them to come and kiss the Children.

そして、子どもたちのところへ来てキスをするように言いました。

Bread at once put down the cage at Tyltyl’s feet and began to make a speech:

パンはすぐにチルチルの足元に鳥かごを置き、演説を始めました。

“In the name of all, I crave permission….”

「みなの名において、私は許可を願います……」

“You sha’n’t have mine!” cried Fire.

「俺の許可はやらないぞ！」と火が叫びました。

“Order!” cried Water.

「静粛に！」と水が叫びました。

“We still have tongues of our own!” roared Fire.

「俺たちにはまだ自分の舌があるんだ！」と火は怒鳴りました。

“Yes! Yes!” screamed Sugar, who, knowing that his end was at hand, kept kissing Water and melting before the others’ eyes.

「そうだ！ そうだ！」と砂糖が叫びました。自分の終わりが近いことを知っていた彼は、水にキスし続け、みんなの目の前で溶けていました。

Poor Bread in vain tried to make his voice heard above the din.

かわいそうなパンは、その騒音の上に自分の声を響かせようとしましたが、無駄でした。

Light had to interfere and command silence.

光は介入して、静かにするよう命じなければなりませんでした。

Then Bread spoke his last words:

それからパンは最後の言葉を語りました。

“I am leaving you,” he said, between his sobs.

「私はあなたたちを去ります」と彼はすすり泣きの合間に言いました。

“I am leaving you, my dear Children, and you will no longer see me in my living form….”

「私はあなたたちを去ります、親愛なる子どもたち。あなたたちはもう、生きた姿の私を見ることはないでしょう……」

“Your eyes are about to close to the invisible life of Things.”

「あなたたちの目は、物たちの見えない命に対して、まもなく閉じられようとしています」

“But I shall be always there, in the bread-pan, on the shelf, on the table, beside the soup.”

「しかし私はいつもそこにいるでしょう。パン入れの中に、棚の上に、食卓に、スープのそばに」

“I who am, if I may say so, the most faithful companion, the oldest friend of Man….”

「私は、あえて言うなら、人間の最も忠実な仲間であり、最も古い友なのです……」

“Well, and what about me?” shouted Fire, angrily.

「それで、俺はどうなんだ？」と火が怒って叫びました。

“Silence!” said Light. “The hour is passing…. Be quick and say good-bye to the Children….”

「静かに！」と光は言いました。「時が過ぎています……急いで子どもたちに別れを告げなさい……」

Fire rushed forward, took hold of the Children, one after the other, and kissed them so violently that they screamed with pain:

火は前へ飛び出し、子どもたちを一人ずつつかみ、あまりにも激しくキスをしたので、二人は痛みで叫びました。

“Oh! Oh!… He’s burning me!…”

「ああ！ ああ！……燃やされる！」

“Oh! Oh!… He’s scorched my nose!…”

「ああ！ ああ！……鼻を焦がされた！」

“Let me kiss the place and make it well,” said Water, going up to the children gently.

「そこにキスをして治してあげましょう」と水はやさしく子どもたちに近づきながら言いました。

This gave Fire his chance:

これで火に機会が生まれました。

“Take care,” he said, “you’ll get wet.”

「気をつけろ」と火は言いました。「濡れるぞ」

“I am loving and gentle,” said Water. “I am kind to human beings….”

「私は愛情深く、やさしいのです」と水は言いました。「私は人間に親切です……」

“What about those you drown?” asked Fire.

「お前が溺れさせる者たちはどうなんだ？」と火が尋ねました。

But Water pretended not to hear:

しかし水は聞こえないふりをしました。

“Love the wells, listen to the brooks,” she said.

「井戸を愛し、小川の声に耳を傾けなさい」と彼女は言いました。

“I shall always be there.”

「私はいつもそこにいるでしょう」

“When you sit down in the evening, beside the springs, try to understand what they are trying to say….”

「夕方、泉のそばに座るとき、泉が何を言おうとしているのか理解しようとしてみなさい……」

Then she had to break off, for a regular waterfall of tears came gushing from her eyes.

すると彼女は言葉を中断しなければなりませんでした。涙がまるで滝のように目からあふれ出たからです。

Flooding all around her.

その涙は彼女の周囲を水浸しにしました。

However, she resumed:

しかし彼女は言葉を再開しました。

“Think of me when you see the water-bottle….”

「水差しを見るとき、私のことを思い出してください……」

“You will find me also in the ewer, the watering-can, the cistern and the tap….”

「水差し、じょうろ、水槽、そして蛇口の中にも、私を見つけるでしょう……」

Then Sugar came up, with a limping walk, for he could hardly stand on his feet.

それから砂糖が、足を引きずるような歩き方でやって来ました。彼はほとんど立っていられなかったのです。

He uttered a few words of sorrow, in an affected voice.

彼は気取った声で、悲しみの言葉を少し述べました。

And then stopped, for tears, he said, were not in harmony with his temperament.

そして途中でやめました。涙は自分の気質に合わない、と彼は言ったのです。

“Humbug!” cried Bread.

「まやかしだ！」とパンが叫びました。

“Sugar-plum! Lollipop! Caramel!” yelped Fire.

「砂糖菓子！ 棒付きキャンディ！ キャラメル！」と火が叫びました。

And all began to laugh, except the two children, who were very sad:

すると、二人の子どもを除いて、みんなが笑い始めました。二人はとても悲しかったのです。

“Where are Tylette and Tylô gone to?” asked our hero.

「チレットとチローはどこへ行ったの？」と主人公は尋ねました。

At that moment, the Cat came running up, in a terrible state.

その瞬間、猫がひどい状態で走って来ました。

Her hair was on end and dishevelled, her clothes were torn.

彼女の毛は逆立ち、乱れ、服は破れていました。

And she was holding a handkerchief to her cheek, as though she had the tooth-ache.

そして彼女は、まるで歯痛があるかのように、頬にハンカチを当てていました。

She uttered terrible groans and was closely pursued by the Dog.

彼女は恐ろしいうめき声を上げ、犬にぴったり追われていました。

Who overwhelmed her with bites, blows and kicks.

犬は彼女に噛みつき、打撃、蹴りを浴びせていました。

The others rushed in between them to separate them.

ほかの者たちは二人を引き離そうとして、その間に飛び込みました。

But the two enemies continued to insult and glare at each other.

しかし二人の敵は、互いに侮辱し、にらみつけ続けました。

The Cat accused the Dog of pulling her tail and putting tin tacks in her food and beating her.

猫は、犬が自分の尻尾を引っぱり、食べ物に画鋲を入れ、殴ったと責めました。

The Dog simply growled and denied none of his actions:

犬はただうなり、自分の行動を何一つ否定しませんでした。

“You’ve had some,” he kept saying, “you’ve had some and you’re going to have some more!”

「少しは味わっただろう」と彼は言い続けました。「少しは味わったし、これからもっと味わうんだ！」

But, suddenly, he stopped and, as he was panting with excitement, it could be seen that his tongue turned quite white.

しかし突然、彼は止まりました。興奮で息を切らしている彼の舌が、すっかり白くなっているのが見えました。

Light had told him to kiss the Children for the last time.

光が彼に、最後に子どもたちへキスをするよう言ったのです。

“For the last time?” stammered poor Tylô.

「最後に？」とかわいそうなチローは口ごもりました。

“Are we to part from these poor Children?”

「ぼくたちは、このかわいそうな子どもたちと別れるのですか？」

His grief was such that he was incapable of understanding anything.

彼の悲しみはあまりにも深く、何も理解できないほどでした。

“Yes,” said Light. “The hour which you know of is at hand….”

「そうです」と光は言いました。「あなたたちが知っている時が近づいているのです……」

“We are going to return to silence….”

「私たちは沈黙へ戻るのです……」

Thereupon the Dog, suddenly realizing his misfortune, began to utter real howls of despair.

すると犬は、自分の不幸を突然悟り、本当の絶望の遠吠えを上げ始めました。

And fling himself upon the Children, whom he loaded with mad and violent caresses:

そして子どもたちに飛びつき、狂おしく激しい愛撫を浴びせました。

“No! No!” he cried. “I refuse!… I refuse!… I shall always talk!…”

「いやだ！ いやだ！」と彼は叫びました。「ぼくは拒む！ 拒む！……ぼくはずっと話し続ける！」

“And I shall be very good…. You will keep me with you and I shall learn to read and write and play dominoes!…”

「そしてとても良い子にする……あなたたちはぼくをそばに置いてくれる。ぼくは読み書きとドミノを覚える！」

“And I shall always be very clean…. And I shall never steal anything in the kitchen again….”

「それに、いつもとても清潔にする……台所で何も盗まないようにする……」

He went on his knees before the two Children, sobbing and entreating.

彼は二人の子どもの前にひざまずき、すすり泣きながら懇願しました。

And, when Tyltyl, with his eyes full of tears, remained silent, dear Tylô had a last magnificent idea.

そして、目に涙をいっぱいためたチルチルが黙っていると、愛しいチローは最後のすばらしい考えを思いつきました。

Running up to the Cat, he offered, with smiles that looked like grins, to kiss her.

彼は猫のところへ走って行き、しかめ笑いのような笑顔を浮かべて、彼女にキスをしようと申し出ました。

Tylette, who did not possess his spirit of self-sacrifice, leaped back and took refuge by Mytyl’s side.

チローのような自己犠牲の精神を持っていないチレットは、後ろへ跳びのき、ミチルのそばに逃げ込みました。

Then Mytyl said, innocently:

するとミチルは無邪気に言いました。

“You, Tylette, are the only one that hasn’t kissed us yet.”

「チレット、まだ私たちにキスしていないのは、あなただけよ」

The Cat put on a mincing tone:

猫は気取った調子を装いました。

“Children,” said she, “I love you both as much as you deserve.”

「子どもたち」と彼女は言いました。「私は、あなたたちが受けるに値するだけ、あなたたち二人を愛しています」

There was a pause.

しばらく沈黙がありました。

“And now,” said Light, “let me, in my turn, give you a last kiss….”

「そして今度は」と光が言いました。「私に最後のキスをさせてください……」

As she spoke, she spread her veil round them.

そう言いながら、彼女は二人のまわりにヴェールを広げました。

As if she would have wrapped them for the last time in her luminous might.

まるで最後にもう一度、自分の輝く力で二人を包み込もうとしているかのようでした。

Then she gave them each a long and loving kiss.

それから彼女は、二人それぞれに長く愛情深いキスをしました。

Tyltyl and Mytyl hung on to her beseechingly:

チルチルとミチルは、すがるように彼女にしがみつきました。

“No, no, no, Light!” they cried.

「だめ、だめ、だめ、光！」と二人は叫びました。

“Stay here with us!… Daddy won’t mind….”

「ここにいて！……お父さんは気にしないよ……」

“We will tell Mummy how kind you have been…. Where will you go all alone?…”

「あなたがどれほど優しかったか、お母さんに話すから……一人でどこへ行くの？……」

“Not very far, my Children,” said Light.

「それほど遠くではありません、子どもたち」と光は言いました。

“Over there to the Land of the Silence of Things.”

「あちらの、物たちの沈黙の国へ行くのです」

“No, no,” said Tyltyl. “I won’t have you go….”

「いやだ、いやだ」とチルチルは言いました。「行かせないよ……」

But Light quieted them with a motherly gesture.

しかし光は、母のようなしぐさで二人を落ち着かせました。

And said words to them which they never forgot.

そして二人が決して忘れなかった言葉を語りました。

Long after, when they were a grandfather and grandmother in their turn, Tyltyl and Mytyl still remembered them.

ずっと後、二人がそれぞれおじいさんとおばあさんになったときも、チルチルとミチルはその言葉を覚えていました。

And used to repeat them to their grandchildren.

そしてその言葉を孫たちに繰り返し語ったものでした。

Here are Light’s touching words:

これが光の心を打つ言葉です。

“Listen, Tyltyl. Do not forget, child, that everything that you see in this world has neither beginning nor end.”

「聞きなさい、チルチル。この世界であなたが見るすべてのものには、始まりも終わりもないということを忘れてはいけません」

“If you keep this thought in your heart and let it grow up with you, you will always, in all circumstances, know what to say, what to do and what to hope for.”

「もしこの考えを心に保ち、それをあなたとともに育てていくなら、あなたはどんな状況でも、何を言い、何をし、何を望むべきかをいつも知るでしょう」

And, when our two friends began to sob, she added, lovingly:

そして、二人の友人がすすり泣き始めると、光は愛情深く付け加えました。

“Do not cry, my dear little ones….”

「泣かないで、かわいい子たち……」

“I have not a voice like Water; I have only my brightness, which Man does not understand….”

「私は水のような声を持っていません。私には、人間が理解しない明るさだけがあります……」

“But I watch over him to the end of his days….”

「しかし私は、人間の生涯の終わりまで、彼を見守っています……」

“Never forget that I am speaking to you in every spreading moonbeam, in every twinkling star.”

「広がる月光の一つひとつ、きらめく星の一つひとつの中で、私があなたたちに語りかけていることを決して忘れないでください」

“In every dawn that rises, in every lamp that is lit, in every good and bright thought of your soul….”

「昇る夜明けの一つひとつ、灯されるランプの一つひとつ、あなたの魂の善く明るい考えの一つひとつの中で、私は語りかけています……」

At that moment, the grandfather’s clock in the cottage struck eight o’clock.

その瞬間、小屋の大時計が八時を打ちました。

Light stopped for a moment and then, in a voice that grew suddenly fainter, whispered:

光は一瞬言葉を止め、それから突然かすかになっていく声でささやきました。

“Good-bye!… Good-bye!… The hour is striking!… Good-bye!”

「さようなら！……さようなら！……時が鳴っています！……さようなら！」

Her veil faded away, her smile became paler, her eyes closed.

彼女のヴェールは薄れて消え、微笑みはさらに淡くなり、目は閉じられました。

Her form vanished.

彼女の姿は消えました。

And, through their tears, the children saw nothing but a thin ray of light dying away at their feet.

そして涙を通して、子どもたちは足元で消えかかる細い光の筋だけを見ました。

Then they turned to the others … but these had disappeared….

それから二人はほかのみんなの方を向きました……しかし彼らは姿を消していました……。
