SCENE III. A room in Polonius’s house.

第一幕 第三場。ポローニアスの家の一室。

Enter Laertes and Ophelia.

レアティーズとオフィーリア登場。

LAERTES. My necessaries are embark’d. Farewell. And, sister, as the winds give benefit and convoy is assistant, do not sleep, but let me hear from you.

レアティーズ「私の荷物はもう船に積まれた。さようなら。妹よ、風向きがよく、船旅が順調に進むなら、怠らずに便りをくれ」

OPHELIA. Do you doubt that?

オフィーリア「それを疑っているのですか？」

LAERTES. For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favour, hold it a fashion and a toy in blood; a violet in the youth of primy nature, forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting; the perfume and suppliance of a minute; no more.

レアティーズ「ハムレットの好意など、軽いものだと思いなさい。一時の流行、若い血気の戯れにすぎない。若い自然の中に咲くすみれのように、早く咲いても長くは続かず、甘くても永遠ではない。一瞬の香りと慰め、それ以上ではない」

OPHELIA. No more but so?

オフィーリア「それだけのことなのですか？」

LAERTES. Think it no more. For nature crescent does not grow alone in thews and bulk; but as this temple waxes, the inward service of the mind and soul grows wide withal.

レアティーズ「それ以上に考えてはいけない。成長する自然は、筋肉や体格だけを大きくするのではない。この身体という神殿が大きくなるにつれて、心と魂の内なる働きも広がっていくのだ」

Perhaps he loves you now, and now no soil nor cautel doth besmirch the virtue of his will; but you must fear, his greatness weigh’d, his will is not his own; for he himself is subject to his birth.

たしかに今は、彼があなたを愛しているのかもしれない。今のところ、その意志の徳を汚すものも策略もないのかもしれない。だが彼の高い身分を考えれば、彼の意志は彼自身のものではない。彼自身が、生まれによって縛られているからだ」

He may not, as unvalu’d persons do, carve for himself; for on his choice depends the sanctity and health of this whole state; and therefore must his choice be circumscrib’d unto the voice and yielding of that body whereof he is the head.

Then if he says he loves you, it fits your wisdom so far to believe it as he in his particular act and place may give his saying deed; which is no further than the main voice of Denmark goes withal.

Then weigh what loss your honour may sustain if with too credent ear you list his songs, or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open to his unmaster’d importunity.

Fear it, Ophelia, fear it, my dear sister; and keep you in the rear of your affection, out of the shot and danger of desire. The chariest maid is prodigal enough if she unmask her beauty to the moon.

Virtue itself ’scapes not calumnious strokes: the canker galls the infants of the spring too oft before their buttons be disclos’d, and in the morn and liquid dew of youth contagious blastments are most imminent.

美徳そのものですら、中傷の打撃を逃れられない。害虫は、春の幼い花がつぼみを開く前から傷つけることが多い。若さの朝、みずみずしい露の中では、伝染する害が最も差し迫っている」

Be wary then, best safety lies in fear. Youth to itself rebels, though none else near.

だから用心しなさい。最も安全なのは恐れの中にある。若さは、たとえ他に誰も近くにいなくても、自分自身に反逆するものなのだ」

OPHELIA. I shall th’effect of this good lesson keep as watchman to my heart. But good my brother, do not as some ungracious pastors do, show me the steep and thorny way to heaven; whilst like a puff’d and reckless libertine himself the primrose path of dalliance treads, and recks not his own rede.

オフィーリア「このよい教えの効き目を、心の見張り番として守ります。でも、お兄様、どうか徳のない牧師のようなことはしないでください。私には天国へ向かう険しく茨の道を示しておきながら、自分は浮ついた放蕩者のように快楽の花道を歩き、自分の忠告を気にも留めない、というようなことは」

LAERTES. O, fear me not. I stay too long. But here my father comes.

Enter Polonius.

LAERTES. A double blessing is a double grace; Occasion smiles upon a second leave.

レアティーズ「二重の祝福は二重の恵み。機会が、二度目の別れに微笑んでいます」

POLONIUS. Yet here, Laertes? Aboard, aboard, for shame. The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail, and you are stay’d for. There, my blessing with you.

ポローニアス「まだここにいるのか、レアティーズ。船へ、船へ、恥ずかしいぞ。風はもう帆の肩にかかっている。皆がお前を待っているのだ。さあ、私の祝福を持って行け」

Laying his hand on Laertes’s head.

And these few precepts in thy memory look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, nor any unproportion’d thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.

「そして、このいくつかの教訓を記憶に刻みつけなさい。考えをすぐ口に出してはいけない。不釣り合いな考えをすぐ行動に移してもいけない。親しみやすくあれ、しかし決して下品であってはならない」

Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel; but do not dull thy palm with entertainment of each new-hatch’d, unfledg’d comrade.

「すでに得た友人で、その価値が試された者たちは、鋼の輪で魂にしっかり結びつけなさい。だが、新しく生まれたばかりで、まだ羽も生えそろわない仲間を、誰彼かまわずもてなして手を鈍らせてはいけない」

Beware of entrance to a quarrel; but being in, bear’t that th’opposed may beware of thee. Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice: Take each man’s censure, but reserve thy judgement.

「口論に入り込むことには用心しなさい。しかし、いったん入ったなら、相手がお前を恐れるほどに身を持しなさい。すべての人に耳を貸せ、しかし声を与える相手は少なくせよ。人々の意見は聞きなさい、しかし自分の判断は保留しなさい」

Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, but not express’d in fancy; rich, not gaudy: for the apparel oft proclaims the man.

「財布が許す範囲で服装は高価なものにしなさい。しかし奇抜であってはならない。上質であれ、派手であってはならない。服装はしばしば、その人を表すものだからだ」

And they in France of the best rank and station are of a most select and generous chief in that. Neither a borrower nor a lender be: for loan oft loses both itself and friend; and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

This above all: to thine own self be true; and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell: my blessing season this in thee.

LAERTES. Most humbly do I take my leave, my lord.

POLONIUS. The time invites you; go, your servants tend.

LAERTES. Farewell, Ophelia, and remember well what I have said to you.

レアティーズ「さようなら、オフィーリア。私が言ったことをよく覚えておきなさい」

OPHELIA. ’Tis in my memory lock’d, and you yourself shall keep the key of it.

オフィーリア「それは私の記憶に鍵をかけてしまってあります。その鍵は、お兄様ご自身が持っていてください」

LAERTES. Farewell.

POLONIUS. What is’t, Ophelia, he hath said to you?

ポローニアス「オフィーリア、彼はお前に何を言ったのだ？」

OPHELIA. So please you, something touching the Lord Hamlet.

オフィーリア「お許しください。ハムレット様に関することです」

POLONIUS. Marry, well bethought: ’tis told me he hath very oft of late given private time to you; and you yourself have of your audience been most free and bounteous.

ポローニアス「なるほど、よく思い出した。近ごろ、彼がしばしばお前に二人きりの時間を与えていると聞いている。そしてお前自身も、面会をずいぶん自由に、気前よく許しているそうだな」

If it be so,—as so ’tis put on me, and that in way of caution,—I must tell you, you do not understand yourself so clearly as it behoves my daughter and your honour. What is between you? Give me up the truth.

「もしそれが本当なら――注意として私にそう伝えられているのだが――お前は、私の娘として、また自分の名誉のために必要なほど、自分の立場をはっきり理解していない。お前たちの間には何があるのだ。真実を話しなさい」

OPHELIA. He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders of his affection to me.

オフィーリア「父上、ハムレット様は近ごろ、私に何度も愛情を示してくださいました」

POLONIUS. Affection! Pooh! You speak like a green girl, unsifted in such perilous circumstance. Do you believe his tenders, as you call them?

ポローニアス「愛情だと！ ふん！ お前は未熟な娘のようなことを言う。こういう危険な状況をまだ吟味できていないのだ。その、お前の言う申し出を信じているのか？」

OPHELIA. I do not know, my lord, what I should think.

オフィーリア「父上、どう考えればよいのか分かりません」

POLONIUS. Marry, I’ll teach you; think yourself a baby; that you have ta’en these tenders for true pay, which are not sterling.

ポローニアス「では教えてやろう。自分を赤子だと思いなさい。お前はその申し出を本物の支払いだと思って受け取っているが、それは本物の銀貨ではない」

Tender yourself more dearly; or,—not to crack the wind of the poor phrase, running it thus,—you’ll tender me a fool.

「もっと自分を高く扱いなさい。そうしないと――この貧しい言葉遊びを無理に続けるなら――お前は私に愚か者を差し出すことになる」

OPHELIA. My lord, he hath importun’d me with love in honourable fashion.

オフィーリア「父上、ハムレット様は名誉ある形で、愛をこめて私に求めてこられました」

POLONIUS. Ay, fashion you may call it; go to, go to.

ポローニアス「そうだな、見かけならそう呼んでもよかろう。まあまあ、もうよい」

OPHELIA. And hath given countenance to his speech, my lord, with almost all the holy vows of heaven.

オフィーリア「そして父上、あのお言葉には、天の神聖な誓いのほとんどすべてが添えられていました」

POLONIUS. Ay, springes to catch woodcocks. I do know, when the blood burns, how prodigal the soul lends the tongue vows.

ポローニアス「そうだ、山鴫を捕まえる罠だ。血が燃えているとき、魂がどれほど惜しみなく舌に誓いを貸すか、私は知っている」

These blazes, daughter, giving more light than heat, extinct in both, even in their promise, as it is a-making, you must not take for fire.

「娘よ、こうした炎は熱よりも光ばかりを放ち、約束が作られているその最中に、光も熱も消えてしまう。だから本物の火だと思ってはいけない」

From this time be something scanter of your maiden presence; set your entreatments at a higher rate than a command to parley.

「これからは、乙女としての姿を見せる機会を少し減らしなさい。話し合いに応じるだけでも、命令一つで済むような安いものではなく、もっと高い価値を置きなさい」

For Lord Hamlet, believe so much in him that he is young; and with a larger tether may he walk than may be given you. In few, Ophelia, do not believe his vows; for they are brokers, not of that dye which their investments show.

「ハムレット様については、彼が若いということだけは信じなさい。彼はお前よりも長い綱で歩き回ることが許されているのだ。要するに、オフィーリア、彼の誓いを信じてはいけない。それらは仲介人のようなもので、まとっている衣装が見せる色とは違う」

But mere implorators of unholy suits, breathing like sanctified and pious bawds, the better to beguile.

「それらは不浄な願いのための単なる懇願者であり、人をよりうまく欺くために、神聖そうで敬虔そうな取り持ち女のような息を吐いているだけだ」

This is for all: I would not, in plain terms, from this time forth have you so slander any moment leisure as to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet. Look to’t, I charge you; come your ways.

「結論はこうだ。率直に言えば、これからは、ほんのわずかな暇な時間でさえ、ハムレット様と言葉を交わして汚すようなことをしてはならない。気をつけなさい。これは命令だ。さあ、行きなさい」

OPHELIA. I shall obey, my lord.

オフィーリア「父上、従います」
