In a few minutes, as Hyacinthe did not return, he left his room.

数分たってもイヤサントが戻らなかったため、公爵は自分の部屋を出た。

But he was attacked on the landing by two masked men, who gagged and bound him before he could utter a cry.

しかし彼は踊り場で二人の覆面の男に襲われ、叫び声を上げる前に猿ぐつわをかまされ、縛られた。

And one of the men said to him, in a low voice:

そして男の一人が低い声で彼に言った。

“Take this as a first warning, monsieur le duc.”

「これを最初の警告と受け取ってください、公爵閣下」

“If you persist in leaving Paris and refusing your consent, it will be a more serious matter.”

「もしパリを離れ、同意を拒み続けるなら、もっと重大な事態になります」

And the same man said to his companion:

そして同じ男が仲間に言った。

“Keep an eye on him. I will see to the young lady.”

「こいつを見張っていろ。若いご令嬢は私が引き受ける」

By that time, two other confederates had secured the lady’s maid.

その時までに、別の二人の共犯者が侍女を取り押さえていた。

And Angelique, herself gagged, lay fainting on a couch in her boudoir.

そしてアンジェリック自身も猿ぐつわをかまされ、私室の長椅子の上で気を失っていた。

She came to almost immediately, under the stimulus of a bottle of salts held to her nostrils.

彼女は、鼻先にかざされた気付け薬の瓶の刺激で、ほとんどすぐに意識を取り戻した。

And, when she opened her eyes, she saw bending over her a young man, in evening-clothes, with a smiling and friendly face.

そして目を開けると、夜会服を着た若い男が、微笑んだ親しげな顔で自分の上に身をかがめているのが見えた。

Who said:

その男は言った。

“I implore your forgiveness, mademoiselle.”

「どうかお許しください、マドモワゼル」

“All these happenings are a trifle sudden and this behaviour rather out of the way.”

「これらの出来事は少し突然で、この振る舞いもやや常軌を逸しています」

“But circumstances often compel us to deeds of which our conscience does not approve.”

「しかし事情というものは、しばしば良心が認めない行為を私たちに強いるものです」

“Pray pardon me.”

「どうかお許しください」

He took her hand very gently and slipped a broad gold ring on the girl’s finger.

彼は彼女の手をとても優しく取り、少女の指に幅広の金の指輪をはめた。

Saying:

そして言った。

“There, now we are engaged.”

「さあ、これで私たちは婚約しました」

“Never forget the man who gave you this ring.”

「この指輪をあなたに贈った男を、決して忘れないでください」

“He entreats you not to run away from him … and to stay in Paris and await the proofs of his devotion.”

「彼はあなたに、自分から逃げないでほしい、パリに留まり、彼の献身の証を待ってほしいと懇願しています」

“Have faith in him.”

「彼を信じてください」

He said all this in so serious and respectful a voice, with so much authority and deference, that she had not the strength to resist.

彼はこれらすべてを、あまりにも真剣で敬意ある声で、あまりにも威厳と敬意を込めて言ったので、彼女には抵抗する力がなかった。

Their eyes met.

二人の目が合った。

He whispered:

彼はささやいた。

“The exquisite purity of your eyes! It would be heavenly to live with those eyes upon one.”

“Now close them….”

「さあ、目を閉じて……」

He withdrew.

彼は退いた。

His accomplices followed suit.

共犯者たちもそれに続いた。

The car drove off, and the house in the Rue de Varennes remained still and silent.

車は走り去り、ヴァレンヌ通りの屋敷は静まり返った。

Until the moment when Angelique, regaining complete consciousness, called out for the servants.

アンジェリックが完全に意識を取り戻し、召使いたちを呼ぶまで、屋敷は静まり返ったままだった。

They found the duke, Hyacinthe, the lady’s maid and the porter and his wife all tightly bound.

彼らは公爵、イヤサント、侍女、門番とその妻が、みなきつく縛られているのを見つけた。

A few priceless ornaments had disappeared, as well as the duke’s pocket-book and all his jewellery.

非常に高価な装飾品がいくつか消えており、公爵の手帳と宝石類もすべてなくなっていた。

Tie pins, pearl studs, watch and so on.

ネクタイピン、真珠の飾りボタン、時計などである。

The police were advised without delay.

警察にはすぐに知らされた。

In the morning it appeared that, on the evening before, d’Emboise, when leaving his house in the motor-car, was stabbed by his own chauffeur.

朝になると、前の晩、ダンボワーズが自宅を自動車で出ようとした際、自分の運転手に刺されたことがわかった。

And thrown, half-dead, into a deserted street.

そして半死半生のまま、人けのない通りに放り出されていたのだった。

Mussy and Caorches had each received a telephone-message, purporting to come from the duke, countermanding their attendance.

ミュシーとカオルシュはそれぞれ、公爵からのものと称する電話を受け、出席を取り消されていた。

Next week, without troubling further about the police investigation, without obeying the summons of the examining-magistrate, without even reading Arsene Lupin’s letters to the papers on “the Varennes Flight,” the duke, his daughter and his valet stealthily took a slow train for Vannes.

翌週、公爵は警察捜査を気にかけることもなく、予審判事の召喚に従うこともなく、新聞に載ったアルセーヌ・ルパンの「ヴァレンヌ逃亡」に関する手紙すら読まずに、娘と従僕を連れて、こっそりヴァンヌ行きの鈍行列車に乗った。

And arrived one evening, at the old feudal castle that towers over the headland of Sarzeau.

そしてある晩、サルゾーの岬を見下ろす古い封建時代の城に到着した。

The duke at once organized a defence with the aid of the Breton peasants, true mediaeval vassals to a man.

公爵はすぐに、ブルターニュの農民たちの助けを借りて防衛体制を組織した。彼らは一人残らず、本物の中世の家臣のようだった。

On the fourth day, Mussy arrived; on the fifth, Caorches; and, on the seventh, d’Emboise, whose wound was not as severe as had been feared.

四日目にミュシーが到着し、五日目にカオルシュが、七日目には、思ったほど傷が重くなかったダンボワーズが到着した。

The duke waited two days longer before communicating to those about him what, now that his escape had succeeded in spite of Lupin, he called the second part of his plan.

公爵はさらに二日待ってから、ルパンにもかかわらず逃亡が成功した今、彼が作戦の第二部と呼ぶものを周囲に伝えた。

He did so, in the presence of the three cousins, by a dictatorial order to Angelique, expressed in these peremptory terms:

彼は三人の従兄弟の前で、アンジェリックに対する独裁的な命令として、それを有無を言わせぬ言葉で表明した。

“All this bother is upsetting me terribly.”

「この騒ぎはすべて、私をひどく動揺させている」

“I have entered on a struggle with this man whose daring you have seen for yourself; and the struggle is killing me.”

「私は、お前自身も大胆さを目にしたあの男との戦いに入った。そしてその戦いは私を死に追いやっている」

“I want to end it at all costs.”

「私はどんな犠牲を払っても、それを終わらせたい」

“There is only one way of doing so, Angelique, and that is for you to release me from all responsibility by accepting the hand of one of your cousins.”

「その方法は一つしかない、アンジェリック。それは、お前が従兄弟の一人の手を受け入れることで、私をすべての責任から解放することだ」

“Before a month is out, you must be the wife of Mussy, Caorches or d’Emboise.”

「一か月以内に、お前はミュシー、カオルシュ、あるいはダンボワーズの妻にならねばならない」

“You have a free choice. Make your decision.”

「選択は自由だ。決めなさい」

For four whole days Angelique wept and entreated her father, but in vain.

まる四日間、アンジェリックは泣き続け、父に懇願したが、無駄だった。

She felt that he would be inflexible and that she must end by submitting to his wishes.

彼女は、父が頑として変わらないこと、そして最後には自分が父の望みに従わなければならないことを感じた。

She accepted:

彼女は受け入れた。

“Whichever you please, father. I love none of them. So I may as well be unhappy with one as with the other.”

「お父様のお望みの方で結構です。私は誰も愛していません。ですから、誰と不幸になっても同じです」

Thereupon a fresh discussion ensued, as the duke wanted to compel her to make her own choice.

すると新たな議論が続いた。公爵は彼女自身に選ばせようとしたからである。

She stood firm.

彼女は譲らなかった。

Reluctantly and for financial considerations, he named d’Emboise.

彼はしぶしぶ、そして金銭的な考慮から、ダンボワーズの名を挙げた。

The banns were published without delay.

結婚予告はすぐに公示された。

From that moment, the watch in and around the castle was increased twofold.

その瞬間から、城の内外の見張りは二倍に増やされた。

All the more inasmuch as Lupin’s silence and the sudden cessation of the campaign which he had been conducting in the press could not but alarm the Duc de Sarzeau-Vendome.

ルパンが沈黙し、新聞で展開していた運動が突然止まったことが、サルゾー＝ヴァンドーム公爵を不安にさせずにはいられなかったため、見張りはいっそう厳重になった。

It was obvious that the enemy was getting ready to strike and would endeavour to oppose the marriage by one of his characteristic moves.

敵が攻撃準備をしており、いつもの特徴的な手段で結婚に反対しようとしていることは明らかだった。

Nevertheless, nothing happened: nothing two days before the ceremony, nothing on the day before, nothing on the morning itself.

それにもかかわらず、何も起こらなかった。式の二日前も、前日も、当日の朝も、何も起こらなかった。

The marriage took place in the mayor’s office, followed by the religious celebration in church; and the thing was done.

結婚は市長の執務室で行われ、続いて教会で宗教的な式が行われた。そして事は成った。

Then and not till then, the duke breathed freely.

その時になって初めて、公爵はほっと息をついた。

Notwithstanding his daughter’s sadness, notwithstanding the embarrassed silence of his son-in-law, who found the situation a little trying, he rubbed his hands with an air of pleasure.

娘の悲しみや、状況を少しつらく感じている婿の気まずい沈黙にもかかわらず、公爵は喜びの表情で手をこすり合わせた。

As though he had achieved a brilliant victory:

まるで輝かしい勝利を収めたかのようだった。

“Tell them to lower the drawbridge,” he said to Hyacinthe, “and to admit everybody.”

「跳ね橋を下ろし、皆を入れるように言え」と彼はイヤサントに言った。

“We have nothing more to fear from that scoundrel.”

「もうあの悪党を恐れることは何もない」

After the wedding-breakfast, he had wine served out to the peasants and clinked glasses with them.

結婚披露の朝食のあと、彼は農民たちに酒をふるまわせ、彼らと杯を合わせた。

They danced and sang.

人々は踊り、歌った。

At three o’clock, he returned to the ground-floor rooms.

三時に、彼は一階の部屋へ戻った。

It was the hour for his afternoon nap.

それは彼の昼寝の時間だった。

He walked to the guard-room at the end of the suite.

彼は続き部屋の端にある衛兵室へ歩いていった。

But he had no sooner placed his foot on the threshold than he stopped suddenly and exclaimed:

しかし敷居に足をかけるやいなや、彼は突然立ち止まり、叫んだ。

“What are you doing here, d’Emboise? Is this a joke?”

「ここで何をしている、ダンボワーズ？ これは冗談か？」

D’Emboise was standing before him, dressed as a Breton fisherman, in a dirty jacket and breeches, torn, patched and many sizes too large for him.

ダンボワーズは彼の前に立っていた。ブルターニュの漁師の格好をし、汚れた上着と半ズボンを身につけ、それは破れて継ぎ当てだらけで、彼には何サイズも大きすぎた。

The duke seemed dumbfounded.

公爵はあぜんとしたようだった。

He stared with eyes of amazement at that face which he knew and which, at the same time, roused memories of a very distant past within his brain.

彼は、その知っている顔を驚愕の目で見つめた。同時に、その顔は彼の頭の中に、はるか昔の記憶を呼び起こした。

Then he strode abruptly to one of the windows overlooking the castle-terrace and called:

それから彼は突然、城のテラスを見下ろす窓の一つへ大股で歩み寄り、呼んだ。

“Angelique!”

「アンジェリック！」

“What is it, father?” she asked, coming forward.

「どうなさいました、お父様？」と彼女は近づいて尋ねた。

“Where’s your husband?”

「お前の夫はどこだ？」

“Over there, father,” said Angelique, pointing to d’Emboise, who was smoking a cigarette and reading, some way off.

「あちらです、お父様」とアンジェリックは言い、少し離れたところで煙草を吸いながら本を読んでいるダンボワーズを指さした。

The duke stumbled and fell into a chair, with a great shudder of fright:

公爵はよろめき、大きな恐怖の震えとともに椅子へ倒れ込んだ。

“Oh, I shall go mad!”

「ああ、私は気が狂ってしまう！」

But the man in the fisherman’s garb knelt down before him and said:

しかし漁師の服を着た男は、彼の前にひざまずいて言った。

“Look at me, uncle. You know me, don’t you?”

「私を見てください、叔父上。私が誰かわかりますね？」

“I’m your nephew, the one who used to play here in the old days, the one whom you called Jacquot….”

「私はあなたの甥です。昔ここで遊んでいた、あなたがジャコと呼んでいた者です……」

“Just think a minute…. Here, look at this scar….”

「少し思い出してください……ほら、この傷跡を見てください……」

“Yes, yes,” stammered the duke, “I recognize you. It’s Jacques. But the other one….”

「そうだ、そうだ」と公爵は口ごもった。「お前だとわかる。ジャックだ。しかし、もう一人は……」

He put his hands to his head:

彼は両手を頭に当てた。

“And yet, no, it can’t be … Explain yourself…. I don’t understand…. I don’t want to understand….”

「いや、それでも、そんなはずはない……説明してくれ……わからない……わかりたくもない……」
