Enter King, attended.

王が従者たちを伴って登場する。

KING. I have sent to seek him and to find the body. How dangerous is it that this man goes loose!

王。私は彼を探し、遺体を見つけるよう人を遣わした。この男が自由に歩き回っているとは、なんと危険なことか。

Yet must not we put the strong law on him: He’s lov’d of the distracted multitude, who like not in their judgement, but their eyes.

しかし、我々は彼に厳しい法を適用するわけにはいかない。彼は混乱した民衆に愛されている。民衆は理性で判断するのではなく、目で見た印象で好むのだ。

And where ’tis so, th’offender’s scourge is weigh’d, but never the offence.

そういう場合には、罪そのものではなく、罪人への罰ばかりが重く見られてしまう。

To bear all smooth and even, this sudden sending him away must seem deliberate pause.

すべてを穏便に進めるためには、彼を急に国外へ送ることも、慎重に考えたうえの判断に見せなければならない。

Diseases desperate grown by desperate appliance are reliev’d, or not at all.

深刻化した病は、荒療治でなければ治らない。さもなければ、まったく治らないのだ。

Enter Rosencrantz.

ローゼンクランツが入ってくる。

KING. How now? What hath befall’n?

王。どうした。何が起きた。

ROSENCRANTZ. Where the dead body is bestow’d, my lord, we cannot get from him.

ローゼンクランツ。遺体がどこに隠されたのか、陛下、私どもには彼から聞き出せません。

KING. But where is he?

王。では、彼はどこにいる。

ROSENCRANTZ. Without, my lord, guarded, to know your pleasure.

ローゼンクランツ。外におります、陛下。見張りをつけ、ご命令を待たせております。

KING. Bring him before us.

王。ここへ連れてこい。

ROSENCRANTZ. Ho, Guildenstern! Bring in my lord.

ローゼンクランツ。おい、ギルデンスターン！ 殿下をお連れしろ。

Enter Hamlet and Guildenstern.

ハムレットとギルデンスターンが入ってくる。

KING. Now, Hamlet, where’s Polonius?

王。さて、ハムレット。ポローニアスはどこにいる。

HAMLET. At supper.

ハムレット。夕食中です。

KING. At supper? Where?

王。夕食中だと。どこでだ。

HAMLET. Not where he eats, but where he is eaten. A certain convocation of politic worms are e’en at him.

ハムレット。彼が食べるところではなく、彼が食べられているところです。ある政治的な虫たちの会合が、もう彼に取りかかっています。

Your worm is your only emperor for diet. We fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for maggots.

食事においては、虫こそ唯一の皇帝です。私たちは他の生き物を太らせて自分たちを太らせ、そして自分たちは蛆虫のために太るのです。

Your fat king and your lean beggar is but variable service,—two dishes, but to one table. That’s the end.

KING. Alas, alas!

王。ああ、なんということだ。

HAMLET. A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat of the fish that hath fed of that worm.

ハムレット。人は、王を食べた虫で魚を釣り、その虫を食べた魚を食べることもあります。

KING. What dost thou mean by this?

王。それはどういう意味だ。

HAMLET. Nothing but to show you how a king may go a progress through the guts of a beggar.

ハムレット。ただ、王が乞食の腹の中を巡幸することもある、とお見せしているだけです。

KING. Where is Polonius?

王。ポローニアスはどこだ。

HAMLET. In heaven. Send thither to see. If your messenger find him not there, seek him i’ th’other place yourself.

ハムレット。天国にいます。そこへ使いをやって確かめてください。もし使者がそこで見つけられなければ、陛下ご自身で、もう一方の場所をお探しください。

But indeed, if you find him not within this month, you shall nose him as you go up the stairs into the lobby.

しかし実際のところ、今月中に見つからなければ、階段を上ってロビーへ行くときに、臭いで彼が分かるでしょう。

KING. [To some Attendants.] Go seek him there.

王。［従者たちに］そこで探せ。

HAMLET. He will stay till you come.

ハムレット。あなた方が来るまで、彼は待っているでしょう。

Exeunt Attendants.

従者たち退場。

KING. Hamlet, this deed, for thine especial safety,—which we do tender, as we dearly grieve for that which thou hast done,—must send thee hence with fiery quickness.

王。ハムレット、お前のしたこの行為のために、そしてお前自身の特別な安全のために――我々はお前の安全を大切に思い、お前のしたことを深く悲しんでいるのだが――お前を火急にここから送らねばならない。

Therefore prepare thyself; the bark is ready, and the wind at help, th’associates tend, and everything is bent for England.

だから準備しなさい。船は整い、風も味方し、同行者たちも待っている。すべてはイングランドへ向けて整っている。

HAMLET. For England?

ハムレット。イングランドへ？

KING. Ay, Hamlet.

王。そうだ、ハムレット。

HAMLET. Good.

ハムレット。結構です。

KING. So is it, if thou knew’st our purposes.

王。お前が我々の目的を知っていれば、本当にそう思うだろう。

HAMLET. I see a cherub that sees them. But, come; for England! Farewell, dear mother.

ハムレット。それを見ている天使が、私には見えます。しかし、さあ、イングランドへ！ さようなら、 dear mother。

KING. Thy loving father, Hamlet.

王。お前を愛する父だ、ハムレット。

HAMLET. My mother. Father and mother is man and wife; man and wife is one flesh; and so, my mother. Come, for England.

ハムレット。私の母です。父と母は夫婦。夫婦は一体。だから、私の母なのです。さあ、イングランドへ。

Exit.

ハムレット退場。

KING. Follow him at foot. Tempt him with speed aboard; Delay it not; I’ll have him hence tonight.

王。すぐ後を追え。急がせて船に乗せろ。遅らせるな。今夜のうちに彼を出発させる。

Away, for everything is seal’d and done that else leans on th’affair. Pray you make haste.

行け。この件に関わることは、すべて封印され、すでに済んでいる。どうか急げ。

Exeunt Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

ローゼンクランツとギルデンスターン退場。

And England, if my love thou hold’st at aught,—as my great power thereof may give thee sense, since yet thy cicatrice looks raw and red after the Danish sword,

そしてイングランドよ、もしお前が私の好意を少しでも重んじるなら――デンマークの剣を受けた傷跡が今なお赤く生々しい以上、私の大きな力はお前にも分かるはずだ――

and thy free awe pays homage to us,—thou mayst not coldly set our sovereign process, which imports at full, by letters conjuring to that effect, the present death of Hamlet.

そしてお前の自発的な畏敬が我々に敬意を払っているなら、我々の王命を冷淡に扱うことは許されない。その命令は、書簡によってはっきりと、ハムレットの即時の死を命じているのだ。

Do it, England; for like the hectic in my blood he rages, and thou must cure me.

実行せよ、イングランド。彼は私の血の中で熱病のように荒れ狂っている。お前が私を治さねばならない。

Till I know ’tis done, howe’er my haps, my joys were ne’er begun.

それが成し遂げられたと知るまでは、私にどんな運が巡ってこようとも、私の喜びは始まらない。
